Site ads

Post by Finchy »

Is it just me or has something changed in the past 24 hours where this site is now flooded with pop up ads every time I visit a thread and on the home page?

We have returned to Google Ads over the weekend. I will admit the pop ups which block access to a page unless you close it are very irritating. The pop ups at the bottom of the page are probably something we will have to learn to live with. We don’t aim to run at a profit, but we do need to earn enough revenue to pay for hosting the site and for things like the Fans’ Choice trophies. We are presently allowing Google Ads to select the formats of advertising automatically, so as to maximise the revenue. We will give it time to settle and reassess how it’s working.

The ones that come up after you post, or first thread you open?

That’s refreshed my memory… I have an ad free version. I think I was given it for free as a longstanding account holder.

I'm glad it's not just me who noticed the change in the website... it's annoying as hell!

The popups are bad enough, but all the flashing ads all over the page remind me of when Homer Simpson started his own webpage.

I use Opera and their ad-blocker extension removes all the ads. I didn't notice anything until Finchy mentioned it.

The Google Ads are automatically selected and they run experiments as to the best way to place ads, and adjust. We'll give it time to settle down. I've had a quick look as to whether we can stop the pop ups, and haven't found an easy solution. I hear everyone on it, as the pop ups are very annoying in my view too.

I’m interested to hear Mike’s thoughts on the new ads to be perfectly honest. Id wager he isn’t a fan at all.

I think a bit of feedback I would have is the odd pop up down the bottom or at the start of visiting the site would be fine, but it's incessant. You minimise the pop up and it comes back. That's what makes it frustrating

Very tough to use the site on the phone right now. Ads everywhere.
Not sure what the solution is as obviously ad revenue supports the site but yeah it's not great.

Not sure if Nickman posted a screenshot of the ads, or if there’s just literally an ad inserted into an otherwise blank post.

Looks pretty much the same as every second post on here now anyway, I can’t tell the difference!

OK, so after discussing with Nacho, we’re going to turn them off and see if we can work out how to make the ads less obtrusive. We will see how we go.

It's really intermittent, ironically this post is pretty ad free, nothing on the sides or in between posts... The other thread though...

I'm more than happy to support the forum with ad revenue, I just think the ads shouldn't take up over 50% of the screen real estate. Surely google has some in between mode where it's not that intense that it makes it look like a fox sports article were reading two sentences worth of info requires strolling twelve pages down.

How much is it costing you all to host it? I'm sure a lot of us would be willing to chip in a few bucks a month, maybe start a patreon?

What’s happening is that Google Ads is running experiments, using Ai, to work out the best spots on the forum to place ads (and to maximise revenue). They had something similar before most of us had heard of Ai. But putting half a dozen ads inside a post (which I have seen tonight) is a bit out of control. They used to have controls which allowed you to give greater weight to user experience (which cut placements and revenue) but the auto pack that’s been installed doesn’t have it now. We will work it through.

We certainly didn’t mean to insult you. Sorry. As I recall, the site had introduced ads and we were financial at the time. We didn’t want to see you out of pocket, when we had costs covered.

I'm sure we could insult Nickman more cheaply if we put our minds to it. Maybe then we could reduce the ads.
