Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
Former Raiders fullback Adam Cook has joined the Green Machine on a train-and-trial contract. Since leaving Canberra, he has played Queensland Cup for the Mackay Cutters and the Redcliffe Dolphins - mostly at halfback or five-eighth. His train-and-trial deal runs through until the end of the Raiders' pre-season trials when a decision will be made on whether he'll remain in the capital.

Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
I imagine they try him at halfback and give him Dargen’s development deal if he is half decent
Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
The idea is cover for halves and fullback.
Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
Surely we initially had plans for him when we handed him his debut. Hoping he now kicks on. Still only young so should have plenty of upside
Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
he was just a step slow for fullback

I remember liking what I saw of him. I could be wrong but it seems like he was the primary playmaker in a Qld Cup team that was pretty ordinary last year whilst in the Cows top 30.
Slim pickings in Australian rugby league for back up halves though.

well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.
Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
Ive always wondered, do train and trial contracts get counted under the salary cap? I'm wondering whether weve already signed him with this just being a way to minimise his impact on our cap?
Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
I would expect if they stay on it would be added to their contract value, no teams are using it to warehouse playersFROG wrote:Ive always wondered, do train and trial contracts get counted under the salary cap? Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
Training deals (players outside the top 30) don’t count to the cap. (A training deal is half the minimum for a top 30 player, if I understand correctly. Players on the supplementary list are paid more.) Suspect there might be a charge to the cap if the player plays NRL, associated with the bonus. But it won’t be an issue.
“Training contracts (train and trial). To rise to $1200 in 2024, $3,000 bonus for any NRL game, can only play NRL from Round 11 (ie after Round 10).”

Makes sense we’d need a replacement in the squad for Dargan.
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

I don't remember Adam Cook at all!
Did he play any first grade, or was it all juniors?

Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
I think this is probably just a straight replacement for Dargan. Halves cover, bit of a utility back.
Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is just the train that's about to hit you.

Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
I’m excited to follow him. Wouldn’t be the first moneyball signing or late bloomer we’ve picked up. I imagine there’s some decent knowledge of him in the building too, he can hit the ground running.
All these fringe spots should be utilised on halves imo. Take a small swing, but if you get someone capable of playing half in the NRL for a period it’s a big hit

I had no idea Adam Cook started a game for the Raiders. I looked at the lineup and also had no idea Darby Medlyn or Subloo also played one game.
Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
That baby Raiders game was one of the more enjoyable and fun games in recent Raiders history

It was a great game!
I think Sam Williams was captain that day
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Sammy was effectively Captain-Coach, as he’d been running the non first graders in the opposed sessions during that Covid season. One of my favourite Raiders games.

We need halves cover , I like it.
Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
I think a few of them came on right at the end of the game as the result was in the balance for nearly the whole 80 mins. The Nickman wrote: ↑February 1, 2024, 1:46 pm I remember that game, but I don’t remember Cook, Dublin or Subloo!
I think one of them literally got one hitup in the last 5 seconds or something. At least he got to touch the ball and get tackled!

Some great names for future NRL Grid Game choices. Much like Mark Asbock and James Buser.

I noted a classic raiders crash ball to open the scoring. Must be the only one that has worked in the past 5 years

Re: Adam Cook returns to Canberra Raiders on train and trial contract
Cook looked good in that game and did some nice things in reserves early the following year but then completely went to water. He seemed to totally lose his nerve and couldn’t catch a cold. Was sad to see.
If he has got his confidence back he could be ok.
