Canberra raids Western Clydesdales

Toowoomba players Declan Ryan, Jai Purser and Bailey Nash have inked deals with the Canberra Raiders. They are set to play Jersey Flegg or SG Ball football in 2024. Five eighth Ryan’s move south to play Flegg comes years after a potential deal “fell through”.

“I was in the early stages of talking to the Raiders a few years ago, but it just didn’t work out at the time,” he said “They reached out to me earlier this year and said another opportunity might be there and asked if I was still interested. It’s very humbling and exciting to have this opportunity.

Hearing that Jordan Macey will coach Jersey Flegg. He has played lower grades with Wests Tigers and Manly Sea Eagles, then after a training accident involving Des Hasler (snapping Macey’s ankle), he moved over to union. Played union sevens for Australia in 2006 and in Scotland. He played with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos from 2011 as hooker and in the halves under coach Aaron Gorrell… and a very successful period for the Roos. He was Flegg assistant this season.

2024 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg draw released

The NSWRL has released the draws for the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg competitions for 2024.

The Canberra Raiders will offer two four game programs at Canberra Stadium late in the year, with Flegg and NSW Cup matches played before and after NRLW and NRL matches. There will also be four traditional triple headers at Canberra Stadium and four double headers. Seiffert Oval will host one round of Flegg and NSW Cup, while Raiders Belconnen will also host games.

In some unusual scheduling, the Jersey Flegg team will play two stand alone matches at Raiders Belconnen in Round 5 (Eels) and 6 (Bulldogs) at noon - while the NSW Cup and NRL teams play double headers at Canberra Stadium later in the day.

But it is a positive development that the Raiders play nine NSW Cup games at Canberra Stadium in 2024, compared with five in 2023. And that there will be seven Flegg games at the venue (three in 2023).

With the admission of a Fijian team, the Kaiviti Silktails, to Jersey Flegg, the Green Machine will travel to the island nation in Round 10. Prince Charles Park at Nadi will be the venue. The Silktails will also visit Canberra for the Round 13 clash at Raiders Belconnen. Both Flegg and NSW Cup will travel to Auckland to meet the Warriors in Round 17.

One of the Raiders' home games has been transferred to North Sydney Oval - the Round 11 clash with the Dragons - for the NSWRL's poor imitation of "Magic Round".

Joe Roddy one step closer to Canberra Raiders dream

Tumut’s Joe Roddy, the grandson of the late great John Hobby and product of the Tumut Minor League, is one step closer to making his Canberra Raiders dream a reality. As an 18-year-old, Roddy got the call-up to the NSW Cup side, making his debut for the Green Machine against the Warriors in the second week of the finals.

While injuries curtailed a promising season, Roddy did enough to get a call-up to the Raiders’ 2024 First-Grade pre-season squad, recently spending eight weeks with the Ricky Stuart-coached outfit.

MATCH REPORT: Jersey Flegg Panthers fall to the Raiders

The Jersey Flegg Panthers suffered a 20-8 loss in their trial on Saturday afternoon at St Marys. It was a good hit out for both sides who will be looking to be competitive in this season's competition kicking off Saturday March 9.

The Raiders took control from about the 15th minute mark of the first half, with their forward pack led by Vena Patuki-Case and Jake Clydesdale getting a roll on.

This week: The Jersey Flegg Raiders start the 2024 season with a road trip to Newcastle. They meet the Knights in a stand alone fixture at the new Newcastle Centre of Excellence. The Raiders have had a good build up to the season. They narrowly lost their trial against the Storm (16-12) in Albury, but produced a good win over the Panthers (20-8) at St Marys the following week. The Panthers have recently been very strong in the lower grades, finishing fourth on the ladder in 2023.

The Raiders have a promising Flegg squad, which finished 2023 strongly. The Raiders took out the SG Ball minor premiership last year. And while they didn't go on to win the Grand Final, the best players strengthened the Flegg team in the back half of the season. The Flegg Raiders lost only once in their final eight matches of the year - and just fell short of making the finals. Canberra has strengthened with a number of new recruits, including centre Bailey Sassall (Milton Ulladulla), winger Jesse Limon (Bathurst Panthers, North Sydney Bears), five eighth Declan Ryan (Western Clydesdales) and prop Caleb Garvie (Cessnock Goannas, Newcastle Knights).

A trip to the Hunter is always a tough and long one, but the start of the season is not a bad time to make it.

Team news: Mitch Henderson and Jalen Afamasaga will paired in the halves, with Peyton Jenkins winning the fullback role. Owen Pattie will start at hooker, while Vena Patuki-Case, Noah Martin and Jaxon Lavender will feature in the forward pack.

Last round: The Canberra Raiders beat the Newcastle Knights, 30-18, in their Jersey Flegg season opener at St Johns Oval on Saturday. They were dominant on the scoreboard in the first half - taking an 18-0 lead to the break. Prop Vena Patuki-Case was the first to score, after just five minutes, with half Mitch Henderson following up in the 22nd minute. Patuki-Case found himself in the sin bin three minutes later, but the Raiders were still able to put on a try to bench forward Tane Kiriona, while Patuki-Case was off the field.

A Noah Martin try early in the second half - off the back of an Owen Pattie grubber to the in goal - extended Canberra's lead to 24 points. But the Knights then staged a big comeback. They scored the next four tries straight, with winger Tea-Rani Woodman Tuhoro getting a double. Newcastle drew within six points with five minutes remaining. But Canberra steadied. With two minutes left on the clock, Mitch Henderson put up a bomb and the ball bounced fortuitously for Owen Pattie. He then offloaded to centre Regan Carr for the match winner.

This round: The Raiders host the Wests Tigers in Round 2 at Canberra Stadium. The Tigers are coming off a 38-20 win over Fijian team, the Kaiviti Silktails at Lidcombe Oval. It was the first ever match for the Silktails in the Flegg competition. The Tigers scored seven tries in all, with second rower Brandon Tumeth and benchie Zakauri Clarke both getting doubles. The home team led 38-4 at the 50 minute mark and were well in control. However they conceded three late tries to the Silktails. After finishing 2023 on a four game losing streak, the Tigers will be relieved to have secured a first up victory.

Owen Pattie looks sharp in those highlights and his game looks like a good fit for Rickyball. I would think Cacciotti will play up in Flegg though.

It's really frustrating that they have the video of these games and still don't even make replays available via NSWRLTV. Nobody watching games at this level care about commentary or camera angles.

16th min TRY RAIDERS to Noah Martin. Jake Afamasaga darts and then kicks ahead, Martin chases and picks up the ball nearly tackled but he gets there in the end. Mitch Henderson converts. Raiders pretty much have things under control. They are clearly the most threatening with the ball.

19th min PENALTY TIGERS for off side. It gets them out of their own end on the second tackle. The set ends with Peyton Jenkins unable to make the in goal escape, after the grubber. The short drop works for the Raiders, with the ball finding touch, 11 metres out.

23rd min Great kick and chase, but there’s a penalty to the Tigers. Perhaps the tackle was a fraction early, before the Tigers player landed on the ground. But the Tigers now lose the ball on half way. Raiders by 12 still.

25th min PENALTY TIGERS with the Raiders in possession, obstruction ruled just inside the Tigers’ half. The Tigers quickly produce another error, but it’s a penalty against Canberra for holding. The Tigers attack on the edge of the red zone.
