65th min TRY RAIDERS to Adrian Trevilyan. Good work in the red zone from the bench hooker, finally the second half points drought breaks. It’s been a bit of an arm wrestle this half. Not the best football you’ll see. Adam Cook converts.

Raiders 28-4

78th min TRY RAIDERS to Trey Mooney, off a Trevilyan pass. Well deserved. Converted from virtually in front by Adam Cook.

MATCH REPORT: The Green Machine continue their red-hot form

The Canberra Raiders have defeated the Warriors 42-4 at Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan - getting some revenge for last years finals defeat. A strong first-half from the Raiders saw them score four tries to one. It was a sloppy start to the second-half but the Raiders powered on scoring another three tries to end the afternoon with a 42-4 victory over the Warriors.

Full time Raiders 42 Warriors 4. Although this is NSW Cup opposition, both hookers in NSW Cup pass the ball better than the current FG hookers, both read the play better and defend better than DL. I was impressed by the Raiders pack and 5/8 Henderson who plays on the right. Jed Stuart played very well too. Chevy did some neat things but he is still developing and a year in NSW Cup will do him no harm long term. I thought the Warriors fullback looked ok running the ball and fielding kicks. Warriors forwards looked out of puff in the second half and it showed with their handling errors.

I don't think was near to their best effort in a lot of ways, they weren't building a lot pressure because of all the errors and penalties and if they didn't scramble well in defense or if the Warriors could hold the ball it would've been a lot closer. Horse, Ata and Mooney are also such a cheat code at that level it didn't matter much and they just rolled over them constantly and still flogged them.

Ignoring those middles who are all just way to good for NSW cup, I thought Sasagi was the best and Stuart and Asomua were also very strong. Trev and Germ looked very good as well. There's really good signs overall with the Flegg starting the year on fire and SG Ball turning its season around.

Last round: The Canberra Raiders remain on top of the NSW Cup ladder after beating the New Zealand Warriors, 42-4, at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. The Green Machine was well in control at the break, scoring four tries in the first half. And while the second forty did not reach any great heights, the Raiders produced a late flurry to run out convincing winners.

The Raiders were bolstered by the late addition of Corey Horsburgh, returning from a four game suspension, and Ata Mariota. However, James Schiller and Kaeo Weekes were withdrawals - as both were required to be in Christchurch on Friday night, as reserves for the NRL clash. Jersey Flegg half Mitch Henderson was called into the team to replace Weekes at five eighth.

The Raiders scored inside the first minute, with Chevy Stewart running wide and setting centre Prinston Esera on a 45 metre run down the grandstand touch line to the try line. Esera had help outside at his disposal, in winger Michael Asomua, but he didn't need assistance. He just charged over the top of two Warriors defenders.

A wayward offload from Chevy Stewart in the 16th minute, gave the Warriors an opportunity with the ball in the red zone - and they made the Raiders pay, with winger Edward Cosi crossing out wide. Just four minutes later, Stewart made amends, backing up after a powerful break from Simi Sasagi, 30 metres from the try line. Four more points.

In the 35th minute, the Raiders produced the try of the match. A flick from Sasagi set it in motion, with Adam Cook sending a cut out pass to winger Jed Stuart. Stuart quickly realised he was running out of space, and just before he was taken over the sideline, he offloaded back inside to centre Manaia Waitere. Terrific try. A few minutes later, Canberra delivered another stunner. Zac Woolford sent the ball to the narrowest of blind sides, a short pass to Henderson followed by another short pass to Michael Asomua. The winger made a great break down the sideline, before passing back inside to Woolford for the four pointer.

The Raiders went to the break with a 22-4 lead. But neither side could quite put things together for the first 25 minutes of the second half. The Warriors bombed an almost certain try in the 52nd minute, when prop Zyon Maiu'u lost the ball over the line. The Raiders broke the second half points drought in the 65th minute, with hooker Adrian Trevilyan scoring an easy try out of dummy half, from close range. That was off the back of a forced line drop out and repeat set. An Adam Cook penalty goal extended Canberra's lead to 26 points with just under 10 minutes remaining.

The Raiders rounded out the match with tries to Mitch Henderson and Trey Mooney. Henderson swooped on a loose ball and ran nearly 40 metres to score, while Mooney crashed over for a well deserved try just before full time.

The Raiders had 58 per cent of the ball. It's hard to lose a game with that much possession. Canberra's completion rate was not outstanding (76 per cent), but the Warriors were sub 60 in that department. The Raiders made over 600 more running metres than the Warriors, and produced seven line breaks (Warriors three). The Raiders made more offloads (12-4) and tackle breaks (42-35), pretty much more everything in terms of attack. The coach probably won't be impressed with Canberra's 35 missed tackles (Warriors 42).

Corey Horsburgh impressed in his return to the field - and he should be playing NRL next week. He made 151 metres with the ball in hand and topped the tackle count (35). Props Trey Mooney (197) and Ata Mariota (180) beat Horsburgh for running metres gained, while Mooney finished second in the tackle count (28). In the backs, Michael Asomua and Chevy Stewart were stand outs, both producing 150 running metres. Hooker Zac Woolford had his brightest match of 2024, making his case for a first grade spot.

This round: In Round 4, the Raiders head to Sydney for a match up with the Newtown Jets at Henson Park. The Jets opened their season with a loss to the Warriors (28-24) at Mt Smart Stadium, but bounced back in Round 2, beating the Bulldogs (28-16) at Cronulla. The Jets are coming off a 25-24 victory at Lidcombe on Sunday, with Niwhai Puru kicking the winning field goal in the final minute. The Magpies scored two tries in the final 20 minutes, taking a 24-18 lead at 67th minute mark. But the Jets levelled thanks to a try to fullback Liam Ison with five minutes remaining.

Team news: The Raiders have named only 16 players, but the club has announced that Emre Guler will be turning out in NSW Cup. Ata Mariota has been elevated to the Raiders' top 17 for the NRL clash with the Sharks, while Trey Mooney will be 18th man in firsts. Corey Horsburgh will be given another run in "reggies" as he rebuilds match fitness. Simi Sasagi and Mitchell Spencer move into the starting pack.

Not sure who it is but it sounds like a classic case of getting a commentator who has done predominantly radio work. They forget that the game they are commentating is televised and that the vast majority of us have eyes that work correctly.

Edit: I would take a pickled Spudd over him. Which is saying something.
