Okay.

Now, bare with me here for a second... why is this in the Canberra Raiders Cup thread?
Where else would you want it to be?
2024 NSW Wheelchair RL off-topic thread!
Well, given the Raiders have this on their Canberra Raiders Cup site, I’ll go with putting it here! :)
Ahhh. Now I understand the classification.

Rolling Raiders crowned NSW Cup premiers in inaugural season

The Rolling Raiders achieved the fairytale ending to their inaugural NSW Cup Wheelchair Rugby League season as they lifted the trophy after a triumphant Grand Final victory.

The Raiders rolled into Menai Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday and secured a dominant 50-36 victory over the minor premiers and competition favourites, the St George Illawarra Dragons.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Preview

Image

Round 13 of the Canberra Raiders Cup. The top four clash between the Woden Rams and Queanbeyan Kangaroos will be the match of the day this Saturday. If you can't be there, it is the free live stream game this week.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Goulburn Bulldogs

Both of these teams are coming off last start losses. The Bushrangers lost a tight contest against the Warriors, 22-18, at Kippax on Saturday. Tuggeranong led 12-10 at the half time break, with both teams crossing twice. They took an 18-16 lead near the 60 minute mark, with bench forward Tom Lunney scoring a try off a crash ball. But Warriors centre Kane Rushton struck back almost immediately. The home team sent the ball wide, flinging it from one side of the field to the other, with Rushton backing up the break from Brandon Withers. It delivered the winning four point margin.

The Bulldogs went into their clash with the Rams last weekend, after back to back wins over the Kangaroos (28-26) and Magpies (36-14). But that counted for little in the clash with Woden. The Bulldogs were unable to score before the 60 minute mark, and by then the Rams led 36-0. Goulburn's left winger Toby Ferris crossed out wide in the 63rd minute, while a long pass from half Tyler Cornish set up a consolation try for right winger Buster Strickland just before full time. It was not a lot of consolation, really.

There isn't a lot between the Bushrangers and Bulldogs on the ladder, but based on the numbers overall and last start form, I'll tip the Bushies at home.

Team news: Lachie Cunanan will shift to fullback for the Bushrangers, while Jack Davison will start on the wing. Temple Rupapera comes in at centre. Dane Klower will take over the No. 7 jersey for the Bulldogs, with Tyler Cornish switching to lock. Adam Jeffery moves to starting prop.

My tip: Bushrangers.

2024 Season record: Bushrangers 4 and 6 (6th, -46)
Bulldogs 3 and 7 (7th, -126)
Form: Bushrangers LLWLL
Bulldogs WLWWL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 18, Bulldogs 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 23, Bulldogs 34 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 4 Bushrangers 34 defeated Bulldogs 24 at Goulburn Arena
2023 Round 11 Bushrangers 46 defeated Bulldogs 6 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 2 Bushrangers 32 defeated Bulldogs 30 at Goulburn Arena

Gungahlin Bulls v West Belconnen Warriors

The Gungahlin Bulls have fallen to last place on the competition ladder, after they suffered their eighth loss in a row on Saturday. They fell to the Magpies, 28-24, at Gungahlin Enclosed after giving up a 14 point lead in the final 10 minutes. First, Magpies hooker Charlie Woolford scored off his own grubber and a rebound. They followed up on the next set, with Yass centre Waisale Nayavucere making a half break and putting winger LIam Grame away. Nayavucere then backed up on the inside for the four pointer. The Magpies couldn't convert either try, and the Magpies still trailed, 24-18. But the Yass momentum was still building.

Three minutes later, a crash ball from half Brandon Thompson on the last tackle put prop Ranapiri Baker over the line. The conversion tied the game. The match winner for Yass came on the next set. It was a stunner, with Nayavucere chasing a kick and then offloading to Grame. Nayavucere and Lane Davis were backing up on the inside - and then Davis threw a brilliant offload to Grame for the try in the corner. Both the Bulls and Magpies have had more than their share of woes, but that was a moment of joy for the long suffering Magpies, at least.

The Warriors did just enough in their victory over the Bushrangers. That has ensured that they are still in touch with the top four. They are only two competition points adrift of the Kangaroos and Sharks. But they can't afford to drop games that they are expected to win. And this game is certainly one of them.

Team news: Todd Sherd comes in for Rourke O’Sullivan on the wing for the Bulls. Jade Schumacher will start in the No. 9 jersey, replacing Matthew Richards. Willie Peace will start at centre for the Warriors, with Kane Rushton moving to wing.

My tip: Warriors.

2024 Season record: Bulls 1 and 9 (9th, -172)
Warriors 5 and 4 (5th, -28)
Form: Bulls LLLLL
Warriors LWLLW
Attacking record: Bulls 16, Warriors 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 33, Warriors 23 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 4 Warriors 38 defeated Bulls 18 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 11 Warriors 32 defeated Bulls 18 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 2 Warriors 36 defeated Bulls 22 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

Woden Rams v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Rams have lost only one match so far this season. It was the Round 4 clash with the Kangaroos at Freebody Oval. Since then, they've recorded a seven game winning streak, beating the Blues and Sharks along the way. They had a day out last weekend at Goulburn, scoring 40 points and winning by 30. Five eighth Brendan Jimenez was simply terrific. He scored four tries, three of them the result of long range runs. The best came early in the second half. Daine Spencer made a tackle break near his own 30 metre line, and then put Koko Salim on a long run down the touch line. Salim put in a kick back inside, 30 metres out - and Jimenez was the man chasing. It was great try. Gideon Afemui also got a double in the match.

The 2023 Premiers, the Kangaroos, are coming off the bye. They are not having the dominant season that they had last year. They drew with the Blues in their last outing at Seiffert Oval. It was the second time this year that they have drawn with their cross town, Queanbeyan rivals. And it is the second time that they've allowed the Blues to make a big, late charge. It is probably worrying captain-coach Sam Williams, a least a little bit. Their recent form line is a bit mixed. They were beaten by the Bushrangers (16-14) in Round 7, while the Bulldogs produced a massive upset in Round 9, beating the Roos (28-26) at Goulburn. But they've also had a recent win against strong opposition, beating the Sharks (19-12) in Round 10.

This should be a terrific contest, and on their day, either team could win. The key difference between the teams is the defence. The Rams have only conceded an average 12 points per game. And they're no slouches in attack. Both the numbers and the form lines point to a win for Woden.

Team news: Koko Salim returns to the wing for the Rams, with Lachie Eveston to start at centre. There are no major changes for the Kangaroos.

My tip: Rams.

2024 Season record: Rams 9 and 1 (1st, +190)
Kangaroos 5 and 2, 2 draws (3rd, +119)
Form: Rams WWWWW
Kangaroos LWLWD
Attacking record: Rams 31, Kangaroos 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 12, Kangaroos 17 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 4 Kangaroos 26 defeated Rams 18 at Freebody Oval
2023 Round 11 Kangaroos 38 defeated Rams 18 at Freebody Oval
2023 Round 2 Kangaroos 40 defeated Rams 10 at Phillip Oval

Queanbeyan Blues v Yass Magpies

The Queanbeyan Blues produced an extraordinary 32-26 victory over the Belconnen Sharks at Seiffert Oval on Saturday - a match in which momentum swung from one team to the other. The Blues started on fire, posting tries to winger Bryce Lee and hooker Blake Murray inside the opening 10 minutes. But then the Sharks piled on four tries in a row. Jacob Piper, Deakin Bright, Lachlan Trindale, Sonny Tupuolo. It was almost a procession. Belconnen five eighth Matt Woolnough was in everything. The Sharks led 20-8 at the break.

Blues half Dylan McLachlan then orchestrated a comeback for the home team. It was three tries in the space of six minutes for the Blues, with McLachlan scoring one of them himself. Blistering attack. It allowed them to snatch back the lead, with just under 20 minutes remaining. 26-20. The Sharks were not finished. A crash over try to prop Robert Aratangi saw the Belconnen outfit draw level with five minutes remaining. But McLachlan had the last word, setting up the last gasp match winner for five eighth Connor Williams with a cross field grubber.

The Yass Magpies finally broke through for a victory last weekend, and what a way to do it. They scored the last four tries of the game, in the last 10 minutes or so, get the four point win over the Bulls (28-24). What a relief it must be for coach Adam Kyle, the whole club. The Magpies had not won since Round 2, when they beat the Bulldogs (32-28). An eight game losing streak, ended. They are finally off the bottom of the ladder. But this week, they face one of the most difficult assignments in the Canberra Raiders Cup of 2024. I can't see Yass upsetting the Blues at Seiffert.

Team news: Dylan McLachlan is out for the Blues, with Samuel Griffin to replace him at halfback. Big boots to fill. Josh Pokoney will start in the No. 1 jersey and George Morseu on the wing. Connor Harrison and Kalani Skipps will form the Queanbeyan centre pairing. Josh Billing returns in the second row. For the Magpies, Lekani Mpaso will move to centre, while Noah Collins comes in on the wing. Marty Smith will start at five eighth, with Declan Ryan to take the No. 14 jersey.

My tip: Blues.

2024 Season record: Blues 7 and 1, 2 draws (2nd, +150)
Magpies 2 and 8 (8th, -180)
Form: Blues WWWDW
Magpies LLLLW
Attacking record: Blues 36, Magpies 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 21, Magpies 35 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 4 Blues 68 defeated Magpies 14 at Walker Park
2023 Round 11 Magpies 36 defeated Blues 20 at Walker Park
2023 Round 2 Blues 32 defeated Magpies 24 at Seiffert Oval

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Image

Round 14 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top of the table clash between the Woden Rams and Queanbeyan Blues. If you can't be there at the game, it is the free live stream game this week.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Gungahlin Bulls

The Bushrangers suffered a 16-10 loss to the Bulldogs at Greenway last Saturday. Something of an upset. Both teams scored two tries in the first half. Bushrangers prop Nicholas Navarro scored in the 23rd minute, off a Liam Oakley crash ball. Ten minutes later, a good long pass from Tuggeranong halfback Rhys Djerke set up a try for centre Peter Soward. That ensured the home team trailed by just two, 12-10, at the half time break. But that was the last of the scoring for the Bushies. A try for Bulldogs centre Dillon Rota, near the 55th minute, produced the only points of the second half.

The Bulls definitely upset the West Belconnen Warriors at Gunghalin in Round 13. Heading into the match, the Gungahlin outfit had won just once all season and were on an eight game losing streak. The last time they'd won was in Round 3, against the last placed Magpies. The Warriors had more than pride on the line. They were aiming to keep in touch with the top four teams on the ladder. But the Bulls scored five tries in a 22-12 defeat of their northern neighbours.

The Warriors were the first to score, with a cross field shift delivering a four pointer to winger Kylan Edwards in the corner. Gungahlin was quick to strike back, after a pass from centre Jeffery Pehara rebounded freakishly off a Warriors player. Fullback Charlie Henderson regathered and quickly offloaded to Earldric Pehara for a try in the corner. In the 34th minute, Raiders junior Mahonri Tiotala drove over the line from dummy half. That saw the Bulls go to the break with an 8-6 lead.

Ten minutes into the second half, Charlie Henderson - the brother of Raiders lower grade half Mitch - was in the action again. He put in a kick to the corner for Bushrangers winger Jesse Croker - and he touched down in the corner. In the 66th minute, Gungahlin half Tre Holten-Williams kicked high and across field. Jeffery Pehara was chasing and batted the ball back, to half Blake Morschell. Four more points. Five minutes later, Croker was in for his second try, after a move down the short side. 22-6. A try to Warriors lock Taylor Withington in the shadows of full time was a consolation only.

The numbers point to a Bushrangers win over the Bulls this weekend. But the Bushies' recent form line is not the best. They have had a tough draw. But they've produced only one recent victory - over the Magpies (22-18) in Round 10. They have lost recently to the Sharks (22-18), Blues (38-18), Rams (38-12), Warriors (22-18) and most recently, the Bulldogs. I'll tip Tuggeranong, but I can't say I have a lot of confidence in the prediction.

Team news: For the Bushrangers Wez Alexander-McCarthy moves to halfback, with veteran Michael Brophy to start at five eighth. David Somerville replaces Peter Soward at centre, while Julian Haywood-Whiley replaces Jack Davison on the wing. Rourke O'Sullivan replaces Todd Sherd on the wing for the Bulls. Kaleb Kearney will start at prop, with Simi Latu dropping to the bench.

My tip: Bushrangers.

2024 Season record: Bushrangers 4 and 7 (6th, -52)
Bulls 2 and 9 (8th, -162)
Form: Bushrangers LWLLL
Bulls LLLLW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 18, Bulls 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 22, Bulls 31 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 5 Bushrangers 30 defeated Bulls 10 at Gungahlin Enclosed
2023 Round 14 Bushrangers 32 defeated Bulls 16 at Gungahlin Enclosed
2023 Round 5 Bulls 42 defeated Bushrangers 16 at Greenway Oval

Woden Rams v Queanbeyan Blues

First versus second. An absolute blockbuster. Both the Rams and the Blues are on 18 competition points. Which ever team wins on Saturday will sit by themselves on top of the competition ladder.

The Rams lost their first placed ranking on Saturday, after falling to the 2023 Premiers, the Kangaroos, 20-12, at Phillip.

The Kangaroos have been boosted by the recent arrival of experienced hooker-half Lachlan Bristow. The former Tumut Blues player-coach headed to France last year. But has recently returned to Australia after winning a title with Villefranche XIII Aveyron. On Saturday, he proved invaluable in his second game with the Kangaroos - switching from five eight to dummy half, after an injury to hooker Lachie Ingram.

The Kangaroos started on fire, with a long Sam Williams pass producing a try for winger Thomas Williams. Four minutes before half time, the captain-coach was at it again, setting up a try for Raiders junior, fullback Jaxen Yow in the corner. It was 10-0 for the visitors at the break.

The Roos extended their lead, five minutes into the second half with a play put in motion by Bristow. He ran cross field from dummy half before shifting the ball to the right. The passing of Bayley Hitchcock and Jesse Dent then helped set up a try for centre Lucas Thomson. 14-0 and the Queanbeyan outfit seemed well in control. But the Rams quickly got themselves back into the game.

In the 50th minute, a kick towards the sideline from Woden half Jesse Eljuga resulted in a perfect bounce for his winger Koko Salim. He offloaded and centre Lachlan Eveston then put second rower Brad Martin on his way to the sideline. The next try for Woden was even more spectacular. It was scored almost from the kick off. Jesse Martin sent fellow second rower, Ron Leapai on a barnstorming run from the Rams' own 20 metre line - and he passed back inside for fullback Daine Spencer. It was Spencer's eighth try of the year. Suddenly, the Rams trailed by just two.

However, Sam Williams soon halted Woden's momentum. Near the 55 minute mark, he put in a perfect kick to winger Jake Kiely, and he charged over in the corner. It was enough to win the day.

The Blues produced a 60-10 win over the Yass Magpies at Seiffert Oval in Round 13. The 50 point margin saw their points differential go past that of the Rams, delivering them first place on the competition table. The Blues were without their chief playmaker, Dylan McLachlan, but others stepped up. It was six all after 20 minutes, but the home team led 30-6 at half time. The Queanbeyan team went on to score a total of 11 tries. Second rower Josh Billing got a hat trick, while fullback Josh Pokoney and centre Connor Harrison both bagged doubles.

This should be a great contest. The Blues have the best attack in the competition, while the Rams have the best defence. One advantage is almost cancelled out by the other. It is a game that could easily go either way. But, with Dylan McLachlan still sidelined, I'll tip the Rams.

Team news: The Rams are largely unchanged from last week. Blues halfback Dylan McLachlan is still out, with Blake Murray taking the No. 7 jersey and Samuel Griffin starting at hooker.

My tip: Rams.

2024 Season record: Rams 9 and 2 (2nd, +182)
Blues 8 and 1, 2 draws (1st, +200)
Form: Rams WWWWL
Blues WWDWW
Attacking record: Rams 29, Blues 38 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 12, Blues 20 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 5 Rams 24 defeated Blues 16 at Seiffert Oval
2023 Round 14 Rams 28 defeated Blues 26 at Seiffert Oval
2023 Round 5 Rams 26 defeated Blues 16 at Phillip Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs v Belconnen Sharks

The Bulldogs are coming off a six point win over the Bushrangers last weekend, while the Sharks will be fresh off the bye. The Belconnen outfit had a loss to the Blues (32-26) in their last outing. Overall the Sharks have clearly had the better season. But all of the Bulldogs' four wins have come in their past six games. They've had recent victories over the Bulls (28-26), Kangaroos (28-26), Magpies (36-14) and in Round 13, the Bushrangers (16-10). The Sharks should be too strong - but I'll admit, the Bulldogs have recently surprised me.

Team news: Cody McCallum replaces James Russell at hooker for the Bulldogs, with Russell taking the No. 14 jersey. Tyler Cornish moves to the bench - and he’s replaced at lock by Mitchell Turner. Matthew Sherer comes into the second row. Deakin Bright holds the fullback spot for the Sharks, with Sam Chapman again partnering Matt Woolnough in the halves. Zac Patch remains at dumm6 half.

My tip: Sharks.

2024 Season record: Bulldogs 4 and 7 (7th, -120)
Sharks 6 and 4 (4th, +93)
Form: Bulldogs LWWLW
Sharks WWLWL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 21, Sharks 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 31, Sharks 19 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 5 Sharks 48 defeated Bulldogs 8 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2023 Round 14 Sharks 24 defeated Bulldogs 16 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2023 Round 5 Sharks 26 defeated Bulldogs 24 at Goulburn Arena

West Belconnen Warriors v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Warriors are two competition points adrift of the fourth placed Sharks - and they're going to have to start putting some form on the board soon. They have had a tough recent draw, losing to the Blues (34-22) in Round 7, the Sharks in Round 9, and the Rams in Round 10. All teams in the top four. Their only recent wins have come against the Bulldogs (20-16) and Bushrangers (22-18). Their loss last weekend to the Bulls was not one they could afford. This week's clash with the third placed Kangaroos is one they really need to win.

The Roos are not quite the team they were last year. But it seems the recent arrival of hooker/half Lachlan Bristow from a stint in France has given them a fillip. Beating the Rams last week is the evidence of that. I'll tip the Kangaroos in this one.

Team news: Ryan McQueen returns at fullback for the Warriors, with Bobby Roberts set to start in the halves, alongside Brodie Schumacher. The Kangaroos are unchanged.

My tip: Kangaroos.

2024 Season record: Warriors 5 and 5 (5th, -38)
Kangaroos 6 and 2, 2 draws (3rd, +127)
Form: Warriors WLLWL
Kangaroos WLWDW
Attacking record: Warriors 19, Kangaroos 30 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 23, Kangaroos 17 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 5 Kangaroos 32 defeated Warriors 18 at Freebody Oval
2023 Round 14 Kangaroos 26 defeated Warriors 16 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 5 Kangaroos 44 defeated Warriors 6 at Freebody Oval

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

Image

Round 15 of the Canberra Raiders Cup features a big top four clash between the Woden Rams and Belconnen Sharks. It is the free live stream match of the round.

Gungahlin Bulls v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Gungahlin Bulls came close to toppling the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Greenway last Saturday. Bulls halfback Blake Morschell scored a spectacular try early in the second half, to give Gungahlin a 14-6 lead. A kick ahead on the last tackle was regathered by hooker Jade Schumacher, who offloaded to Morschel, who was backing up on the outside. The Bushrangers struck back quickly, after the Bulls were unable to defuse a bomb from Wez Alexander-McCarthy - delivering a four pointer to Tuggeranong centre Temple Rupapera. A couple of minutes later, Rupapera was in the thick of the action again - making a big break down the left edge. That set up a red zone opportunity for Alexander-McCarthy, who broke out of an attempted tackle and ran five metres to the line. That saw the home team take the lead, 16-14, at the 55 minute mark.

Late in the contest, Wez Alexander-McCarthy intercepted and he thought he was away for a match sealing try. But some late contact from Bushrangers prop Jayden Thomas on Blake Morschel in the lead up - not much more than a push, really - produced a penalty for the Bulls. The relatively easy goal for Morschel levelled the scores. But almost straight after the re-start, the Bulls lost the ball in the ruck - and conceded a penalty, apparently for back chat, right in front of the posts. Liam Oakley did not miss the opportunity for the match winning penalty goal. 18-16 for the home team.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos thrashed the West Belconnen Warriors, 56-6, on Sunday at Kippax. The Roos scored 10 tries, with captain-coach Sam Williams getting a double, along with second rower Jesse Dent. With Williams, five eighth Lachlan Bristow and hooker Lachie Ingram, the Roos are blessed for playmakers. They orchestrated proceedings almost perfectly. The Warriors' only points came at the very end of the game, with a try for five eighth Calab Edwards.

The Bulls have shown some spark the last couple of weeks. But the recent arrival of Bristow has significantly bolstered the 2023 premiers. The Kangaroos are right back in the frame as a contender for the 2024 title. It's difficult to see the west Queanbeyan outfit dropping this game.

Team news: Earldric Pehara replaces Rourke O'Sullivan on the wing for the Bulls, with Jeffery Pehara coming in at centre. Jack Sandford replaces Jaxen Yow at fullback for the Kangaroos, with Yow taking over the No. 14 jersey. Matt Wheatley comes in for Bayley Hitchcock at starting prop.

My tip: Kangaroos.

2024 Season record: Bulls 2 and 10 (8th, -164)
Kangaroos 7 and 2, 2 draws (3rd, +177)
Form: Bulls LLLWL
Kangaroos LWDWW
Attacking record: Bulls 16, Kangaroos 32 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 30, Kangaroos 16 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 6 Kangaroos 44 defeated Bulls 8 at Freebody Oval
2023 Round 16 Kangaroos 58 defeated Bulls 14 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

Belconnen Sharks v Woden Rams

First versus fourth. There have been some blockbusters in recent weeks, and this shapes as another.

The Rams again sit alone on top of the competition ladder, after defeating the Queanbeyan Blues, 26-16, at Phillip Oval on Saturday. Rams half Brendan Jimenez was outstanding, before he was forced from the field with a serious leg problem. He suffered the injury in a tackle, just after he'd made a huge break down the left edge. He is going to be out for some time, but will reportedly be able to return for the finals. Josh Billing was the stand out for the Blues, scoring a hat trick - and he has been deservedly picked by the Raiders in NSW Cup this weekend.

Billing was the man who got the scoring underway, in the fourth minute. He snatched the ball out of the air, following a Connor Williams kick towards the sideline - and he scored in the corner. 4-0. The Rams hit back in the 13th minute, with Jimenez putting in a grubber, which Blues fullback Josh Pokoney could not defuse. Fullback Daine Spencer was on the spot to pick up the loose ball and score. In the 24th minute, Jimenez was again in action, dummying, running, swerving on the last tackle. He then sent the ball wide to centre Lachlan Eveston for a four pointer.

Five minutes later, Billing made a red zone charge, fending off the first defender, and then carrying two or three other defenders over the try line. The Rams had the final say in the first half. Daine Spencer made a break, before Siamani Leuluai got a kick away to the corner - and winger Sam Gash grounded it. 16-10 for the Rams at the break.

The Rams went further ahead, two minutes into the second half, with bench hooker Kosta Posantzis diving over from dummy half. In the 47th minute, Billing kept the game alive for the Blues, making a terrific angled run from 20 metres out, throwing a dummy along the way to the try line. Jimenez set up his third try of the match near the 60 minute mark, kicking to the corner - and Sam Gash had his second. With that, the Rams had done enough for the win. Woden fullback Daine Spencer and backrower Jesse Martin were sin binned in the final couple of minutes, but their 11 man line held.

The Sharks travelled to Goulburn last Saturday and came away with a 24-18 victory. The Sharks led by only 4-0 at half time - and most of the point scoring action took place in the final quarter of the game. The Bulldogs took an 18-14 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining - after a Nick Cornish kick to the in goal set up a second try for second rower Matthew Scherer. But two late tries for Sharks prop Robert Aratangi and Raiders junior Jacob Piper delivered a six point victory for the visitors.

This should be a great contest. The numbers are pointing to a victory for the Rams. The Rams have the best defence in the competition, and have conceded only 13 points on average this year. And that's where they have the clearest advantage over the Sharks. Overall, the Rams should be too strong in this one.

Team news: Yuri Hromow will start at fullback for the Sharks, with Deakin Bright moving to the wing. Jacob Piper and Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai will form the centre partnership. Harrison Leadbitter switches from centre to the second row, while Albert Watego will start at prop. In a big blow for the Rams, five eighth Brendan Jimenez is out. Adam Lucas takes over the No. 6 jersey, while Josh Fattore will be his halves partner. Jess Eljuga drops to the bench and has been named at No. 14. Kosta Posantzis will start at hooker in place of Lucas.

My tip: Rams.

2024 Season record: Sharks 7 and 4 (4th, +99)
Rams 10 and 2 (1st, +192)
Form: Sharks WLWLW
Rams WWWLW
Attacking record: Sharks 28, Rams 29 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 19, Rams 13 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 6 Rams 16 defeated Sharks 10 at Seiffert Oval
2023 Round 16 Sharks 20 defeated Rams 14 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2023 Round 7 Rams 32 defeated Sharks 4 at Phillip Oval

Yass Magpies v West Belconnen Warriors

The Magpies are coming off the bye - and a 50 point drubbing at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues in their last outing. The Warriors are also coming off a 50 point drubbing - the victims of the third placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos last weekend. The Warriors would have been hoping for a much better performance, with the return of coach Ryan McQueen to the field, at fullback. They haven't beaten any of the teams in the top four so far this year - and they would have been looking to make a statement on that. But they now find themselves four competition points adrift of the fourth placed Sharks. And there are only five games left in their regular season. They should beat the Magpies this week. If they don't they're in a whole pile of trouble.

Team news: Patty McPhillips replaces Lekani Mpaso at centre for the Magpies, while Ryan Greig comes into the second row for McPhillips. Kylan Edwards switches from the wing to centre for the Warriors, replacing George Pohahau.

My tip: Warriors.

2024 Season record: Magpies 2 and 9 (9th, -230)
Warriors 5 and 6 (6th, -88)
Form: Magpies LLLWL
Warriors LLWLL
Attacking record: Magpies 16, Warriors 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 37, Warriors 26 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 6 Warriors 24 defeated Magpies 10 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 16 Warriors 35 defeated Magpies 18 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 7 Warriors 48 defeated Magpies 0 at Walker Park

Goulburn Bulldogs v Queanbeyan Blues

The Bulldogs are likely out of the running for the 2024 finals. They sit in seventh place on the ladder, six competition points away from the fourth placed Sharks. They have only four games left - including this week's clash with the second placed Blues. There are also games coming up against the Kangaroos and Warriors. No easy points on offer there. The Blues have been without halfback Dylan McLachlan the past couple of weeks. And that definitely cost them in last weekend's loss to the Rams. But, regardless, they should be too strong for the Bulldogs this week.

Team news: The starting line up for the Bulldogs is largely unchanged. Dylan McLachlan returns at halfback for the Blues. That’s a big IN. Blake Murray moves from halfback to hooker. Luke Tuialii, named last week on the wing for the Australian Schoolboys, comes in at centre. Josh Billing has been named in the second row, so that may be a hint that he is not playing NSW Cup this week. He certainly cannot play in both games.

My tip: Blues.

2024 Season record: Bulldogs 4 and 8 (7th, -126)
Blues 8 and 2, 2 draws (2nd, +190)
Form: Bulldogs WWLWL
Blues WDWWL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 20, Blues 37 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 31, Blues 21 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 6 Blues 38 defeated Bulldogs 14 at Seiffert Oval
2023 Round 16 Bulldogs 54 defeated Blues 6 at Goulburn Arena
2023 Round 7 Bulldogs 46 defeated Blues 26 at Seiffert Oval

'Seven days to respond': spectator faces multi-year ban for part in ugly brawl

A spectator faces a multi-year ban, while a West Belconnen player could spend at least 10 weeks on the sideline for their involvement in an ugly brawl last weekend. Both parties have been sent their charge sheets from the incident that occurred during the Warriors' Katrina Fanning Shield game against the Bungendore Kangaroos at Raiders Belconnen last weekend. It led to the game being called off with the Warriors leading 48-0 at the time.

How much do you get for a beautiful brawl?
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Is women's league thriving in Canberra? The answer will surprise you

The rise of the Canberra Raiders women has helped spark an increase in junior rugby league participation numbers in the capital, but senior women' teams are struggling to field full sides. The Belconnen Sharks have seen their participation rates double over the past 12 months. The club added a Katrina Fanning Shield team - the senior women's competition - this year, but the same spark hasn't flowed through yet and at times they struggle to get a full team on the field.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Preview

Image

It's Washout Round in the 2024 Canberra Raiders Cup. Round 1 of the competition was abandoned due to heavy rain - and postponed to this week. The match of the round is the top four clash between the Belconnen Sharks and Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The top four teams are looking secure - with nearest chasers, the Bushrangers and Warriors, trailing the fourth placed Rams by six competition points. But the Sharks and Roos will be keen for a win, in order to further cement a finals placing.

Belconnen Sharks v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Sharks upset the ladder leading Rams, 4-0, at a muddy, windy and cold Bruce on Saturday. It took almost 65 minutes for the first and only try of the game to be scored - with Matt Woolnough spinning the ball to the left, and winger Connor Massen crossing out wide. The Rams were remarkably good in defence, repeatedly turning the Sharks away. But it took just one crack in the line to determine the outcome. It was the Sharks' first win over a top four team this year.

The Kangaroos scored 10 tries in defeating the Bulls, 48-22, at a water logged Gungahlin on Saturday. The Roos were always in control, leading 26-10 at half time. Gungahlin scored a couple of tries in the first half, with Tre Holten-Williams stepping his way to the line, and winger Jeffery Pehara getting an intercept. It was just enough to keep them vaguely in the contest. The Bulls also got over the line twice in the second half, but the Roos were always comfortable. Centre Brayden Draber, winger Bailey Nash, second rower Jesse Dent and lock Ryan Dodson all got doubles. Winger Jake Kiely got his 11th try of the season, while Dent now has 10. Dent really is a weapon, while the halves Sam Williams and Lachlan Bristow were the key to the Roos' victory. Their kicking and organisational abilities stand out.

This should be a great contest, and the Sharks have rebuilt themselves into a genuine contender over the past couple of years. However, the Williams-Bristow combination is growing every week and it won't surprise me if they steer the Kangaroos to yet another premiership decider. This is the free live stream match of the week.

Team news: Jesse Bellchambers comes in at hooker for the Sharks, with player-coach Zac Patch out of the team. Owen Hromow returns at lock. The Kangaroos are largely unchanged.

My tip: Kangaroos.

2024 Season record: Sharks 8 and 4 (4th, +103)
Kangaroos 8 and 2, 2 draws (3rd, +203)
Form: Sharks LWLWW
Kangaroos WDWWW
Attacking record: Sharks 26, Kangaroos 33 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 17, Kangaroos 16 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 10 Kangaroos 19 defeated Sharks 12 at Freebody Oval
2023 Preliminary Final Kangaroos 40 defeated Sharks 10 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 17 Kangaroos 44 defeated Sharks 8 at Freebody Oval
2023 Round 6 Kangaroos 46 defeated Sharks 6 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

Queanbeyan Blues v Gungahlin Bulls

At this time last year, the Queanbeyan Blues were having a season from hell. They'd just forfeited a match due to lack of numbers. Their injury problems were that bad - and they had no reserve grade to draw upon. They had just two wins and a draw to their name. They'd go on to finish in 7th place on the ladder, just staving off a wooden spoon. It seems like a long time ago now. The Blues sit on top of the competition ladder - ahead of the Rams on points differential. They are the No. 1 attacking team in the league. It's a credit to coach Jeremy Braun and his on-field general, Dylan McLachlan.

The Blues beat the Bulldogs, 42-10, at Goulburn on Saturday, after leading 22-4 at half time. The Queanbeyan outfit was always in the box seat. They scored eight tries to two, with centres Luke Tuialii and Kalani Skipps and fullback Josh Pokoney among the try scorers. Five eighth Connor Williams got his 10th try of the season.

The Bulls are coming off a 26 point defeat at the hands of the Kangaroos last week. It will be a massive upset if they can find their way to a win at Seiffert against the Blues.

Team news: Josh Billing replaces Luke Tuialii at centre for the Blues. Ata Tupou and John Papalii will be the starting props. Allan Wrattan replaces Billing in the second row. For the Bulls, Jayden Ford comes in at starting prop, with Simi Latu moving to the second row. Josh Morschel has also been included in the second row.

My tip: Blues.

2024 Season record: Blues 9 and 2, 2 draws (1st, +222)
Bulls 4 and 9 (7th, -158)
Form: Blues DWWLW
Bulls LLWLL
Attacking record: Blues 37, Bulls 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 20, Bulls 32 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 10 Blues 46 defeated Bulls 10 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
2023 Round 17 Blues 36 defeated Bulls 33 at Seiffert Oval
2023 Round 6 Bulls 46 defeated Blues 26 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

Yass Magpies v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

Yass Magpies coach Adam Kyle has announced he will stand down at the end of the season, after two years in charge at Walker Park. The announcement follows the club's third win of the season - a 14-8 victory over the West Belconnen Warriors. The Magpies were the first to score through lock Lane Davis, midway through the first half. But the Warriors put on two quick tries just before the break. A kick to the corner from half Brodie Schumacher set up a try for winger Kayan Watterson - who dived on the ball in a huge pool of water. Coach and fullback Ryan McQueen promptly came up with another, coming up with the ball after a tackle on Magpies custodian Cooper O'Connor - and racing away. 8-4 to the visitors at the break.

Magpies prop Ranapiri Baker crashed over the line early in the second half, levelling the scores. 8-8. That's how it stayed for most of the second forty. But with five minutes left, second rower Ben Davis scored from close to the line, out of dummy half. The conversion from Liam Grame delivered the final six point margin for Yass.

The Bushrangers are coming off a bye, after a very narrow, 18-16 victory over the Bulls. That win broke a three game losing streak, so they've not been in the best of form. They are six competition points adrift of the fourth placed Sharks - and with only four matches left, they're already close to being out of finals contention. If they lose to the Magpies...

Team news: Temple Rupapera replaces Lachie Cunanan at fullback for the Bushrangers. Brigham Moeakiola comes back in at centre. Liam Oakley moves to halfback, while Mitch Brophy will start at hooker.

My tip: Bushrangers.

2024 Season record: Magpies 3 and 9 (8th, -224)
Bushrangers 5 and 7 (5th, -50)
Form: Magpies LLWLW
Bushrangers WLLLW
Attacking record: Magpies 16, Bushrangers 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 35, Bushrangers 22 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 10 Bushrangers 22 defeated Magpies 18 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 17 Bushrangers 66 defeated Magpies 0 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 6 Bushrangers 22 defeated Magpies 16 at Walker Park

Woden Rams v West Belconnen Warriors

The Rams fell to their third loss of the season last weekend, defeated by the Sharks, 4-0, in terrible conditions. The loss has meant that they have dropped to second place on the ladder, on points differential. The positive the Rams can draw from the loss is the standard of their defence. They are the No. 1 team in the league in that department, very clearly. I'm not sure what has happened to the Warriors. With their season on the line, they have lost their last three games straight - to the Bulls (22-12), Kangaroos (56-6) and Magpies (14-8). They're in the same boat as the Bushrangers - six competition points away from the fourth placed Sharks and four games left. Three of those games are against top four opposition, so it'll be a miracle if they make it to the finals. The Rams should be far too strong.

Team news: Adam Lucas and Josh Fattore will again form the halves partnership for the Rams, with Brendan Jimenez sidelined. Michael Geiger comes in on the wing. Kurtis Robinson replaces Taylor Withington at lock for the Warriors.

My tip: Rams.

2024 Season record: Rams 10 and 3 (2nd, +188)
Warriors 5 and 7 (5th, -94)
Form: Rams WWLWL
Warriors LWLLL
Attacking record: Rams 26, Warriors 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 12, Warriors 25 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 10 Rams 32 defeated Warriors 6 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 17 Warriors 27 defeated Rams 24 at Phillip Oval
2023 Round 6 Warriors 22 defeated Rams 12 at Raiders Belconnen

Wife of Raiders star faces possible ban after allegedly sparking brawl from the crowd

The wife of a Canberra Raiders player is facing the possibility of a significant ban from attending all levels of Canberra rugby league competitions following allegations she was the spectator involved in a physical altercation with a female player. It is understood Raiders prop Josh Papalii's wife, Sepa, is the spectator who allegedly confronted a player on the sideline of a Katrina Fanning Shield game, sparking a brawl between teams before the game was abandoned two weeks ago.

Crystal Papalii - who played for the Raiders' NRLW side earlier this month and is the younger sister of Josh - was playing for West Belconnen in the game. She is believed to be facing potentially a lengthy suspension as well.

No, the Canberra Region Rugby League only has control over their own matches. NRL or NSWRL matches wouldn’t be affected… unless those bodies chose to recognise any CRRL ruling over the reported issue. If the report is correct. They’re also allegations only at the moment of course.

Canberra spectator banned for 10 years after rugby league brawl

Masepa Papalii has been banned for 10 years for her involvement in a brawl at a Katrina Fanning Shield game, while her sister-in-law Crystal Papalii has been hit with a 20-week ban.

Crystal, a Warriors player, has appealed the length of the ban, which was likely to be heard by the CRRL judiciary on Wednesday night. Masepa, the wife of Canberra Raiders great Josh Papalii, was a spectator at the game and the brawl started after she entered the playing area to confront a Kangaroos player on the sideline. The pair were given seven days to respond to the charges, but Masepa didn't respond and has now been banned from attending any CRRL or NSWRL games for the next decade.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

There are only three rounds left in the regular season of the Canberra Raiders Cup - and the jostling for spots in the top four is reaching a peak. The Blues and Rams occupy the top two spots and are level on 22 competition points. First and second come with a "second bite at the cherry" in the finals. And that's exactly what the third placed Kangaroos will be after in the final stretch.

The Roos are only two competition points behind the Blues and Rams, and they can earn six points in the final three rounds. The Blues and Rams can only earn four. That's because the top two teams have a bye in front of them. And in the Canberra Raiders Cup, you don't get two points for a bye. You get nothing.

The Blues have two games left - against the Warriors and Bushrangers. Both are very winnable.

The Rams have games against the Bulls and Magpies ahead. There are no easy games in rugby league, but both of those teams are at the bottom of the ladder. The Rams can still take the minor premiership, but the Blues have better points differential at present, to the tune of 40 points. So the Rams will want to win both of their remaining games, first of all. But if they can build some margins, in those games, it can only help their chances of a first place finish.

The three games the Kangaroos have remaining are against the Bushrangers, Magpies and Bulldogs - all teams outside the top four. Only the Bushrangers have any faint finals hopes left.

The Sharks are the only team in the top four that haven't firmly cemented a finals spot. However, their fate is completely in their own hands. They face the Magpies, Bushrangers and Warriors in their final matches. Tuggeranong and West Belconnen only have mathematical chances of making the finals left. If the Sharks keep on winning, they play finals.

The Bushies are four competition points adrift of the Sharks, but they've got a really difficult draw. They face top four opposition in all of their final games - against the Roos, Sharks and Blues. It's unlikely they can successfully navigate that obstacle course.

The Warriors would have to win every one of their last three games (Blues, Bulldogs and Sharks) - and depend on both the Sharks and Bushrangers falling in a heap. Basically, their chances are gone.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

This is a re-match of the 2023 Grand Final, won by Queanbeyan. It shapes as the match of the round.

The Kangaroos are coming off a 38-20 victory over the Sharks in Washout Round at Bruce last weekend. The Roos dominated the first half, with five eighth Lachlan Bristow getting a double, while Raiders junior backs, Jack Sandford and Jaxen Yow also crossed. 24-6 at the break. It was more of a grind in the second half, with the visitors taking a 32 point lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The Sharks piled on three quick tries in the final minutes - to Connor Massen, Matt Woolnough and Tristan Eldridge. Roos captain-coach Sam Williams would not have been happy about that. But it was still a comprehensive victory. Jesse Dent was outstanding for the Roos, while the mid season addition of Bristow has added a new dimension to the team. They'll have a strong chance of defending their title in the play offs.

The Bushrangers had a narrow, 36-32 victory over the Magpies at Yass last Saturday. Yass pushed Tuggeranong all the way. The visitors took a 12 point lead at the 65 minute mark, courtesy of a crash over try to prop Nicholas Navarro. But the Magpies produced a late surge. Yass winger Noah Collins crossed in the corner with five minutes left, while Bayley Maher scored an 80 metre intercept try in the final minute. Yass could not convert either try - and they finished four points short.

The Bushrangers have been a bit of a thorn in the defending premiers' side in the past couple of years. Tuggeranong was the only team to best the men in maroon last year - and they unexpectedly beat the Roos earlier this season. Despite all that, the numbers and recent form lines point to a comfortable win for Kangaroos on Saturday. With the Rams having the bye this week, a win for the Roos will give them second place on the ladder, on points differential.

Team news: Wez Alexander-McCarthy takes over from Liam Oakley at halfback for the Bushrangers, with captain Oakley moving to lock. Mitch Brophy retains the No. 9 jersey. Marcus Malaetasi and Brad Buckley will be the starting props, with Thomas Lunney coming into the second row.

My tip: Kangaroos.

2024 Season record: Kangaroos 9 and 2, 2 draws (3rd, +221)
Bushrangers 6 and 7 (5th, -46)
Form: Kangaroos DWWWW
Bushrangers LLLWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 34, Bushrangers 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 17, Bushrangers 23 points conceded per match

2023 Round 15 Bushrangers 18 defeated Kangaroos 17 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 8 Kangaroos 44 defeated Bushrangers 10 at Freebody Oval

Yass Magpies v Belconnen Sharks

The Magpies have produced a couple of recent victories - over the Bulls (28-24) and Warriors (14-8). And that has seen them climb off the bottom of the competition table. They've got three tough games to finish the season (Sharks, Kangaroos and Rams), but they'll be hoping that they've done enough to avoid the wooden spoon this year. The Sharks? As mentioned, they are close to cementing a finals place - and this is a game they won't want to drop.

Team news: The Magpies are largely unchanged. Sharks coach Zac Patch returns at hooker, with Jesse Bellchambers taking over from Owen Hromow at lock. Tristan Eldridge comes into the starting team at centre, with Jacob Piper replacing Harrison Leadbitter in the second row.

My tip: Sharks.

2024 Season record: Magpies 3 and 10 (8th, -228)
Sharks 8 and 5 (4th, +85)
Form: Magpies LWLWL
Sharks WLWWL
Attacking record: Magpies 17, Sharks 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 35, Sharks 19 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 7 Sharks 32 defeated Magpies 22
2023 Round 15 Sharks 28 defeated Magpies 16 at Walker Park
2023 Round 8 Sharks 42 defeated Magpies 14 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

Goulburn Bulldogs v Gungahlin Bulls

Neither the Bulldogs, nor the Bulls are in finals contention. The Bulls have shown a bit of spark in recent weeks, with a win over the Warriors (22-12) and a narrow loss to the Bushrangers (16-18). But they're coming off two big losses to the Kangaroos (48-22) and Blues (46-14). They are now running last.

It's been a difficult year for Goulburn, with captain-coach Mitch Cornish restricted to the sidelines due to injury. They have produced a couple of recent wins over the Magpies (36-14) and Bushrangers (16-10). But they've had some heavy losses to top four opposition too. They were dominated by the Blues in their last outing (42-10).

The Bulldogs should have a slight advantage in this match, at home.

Team news: Bailey Sassall replaces Matthew Sherer in the second row for the Bulldogs, while Tyler Cornish comes in at lock for Mitchell Turner.

My tip: Bulldogs.

2024 Season record: Bulldogs 4 and 9 (7th, -158)
Bulls 2 and 12 (9th, -222)
Form: Bulldogs WLWLL
Bulls LWLLL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 20, Bulls 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 32, Bulls 32 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 7 Bulldogs 28 defeated Bulls 26 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
2023 Round 15 Bulldogs 50 defeated Bulls 4 at Goulburn Arena
2023 Round 8 Bulldogs 52 defeated Bulls 10 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

Queanbeyan Blues v West Belconnen Warriors

The Queanbeyan Blues are riding high, on top of the ladder. They are the No. 1 attacking team in the competition by some margin. Half Dylan McLachlan (9) and five eighth Connor Williams (11) pull the strings - and have 20 tries between them. Blues outside back/second rower Josh Billing (17) is the leading try scorer in the league. Josh Pokoney and Jack Anderson also have seven tries each.

Queanbeyan scored eight tries to two in a 32 point defeat of the Bulldogs at Goulburn last weekend. The Warriors, meanwhile, are on a four game losing streak - and have effectively been ruled out of finals contention. They conceded seven tries to the Rams in a 36-10 defeat at Phillip. It is difficult to see the Warriors stopping the march of the Blues this week.

Team news: Australian Schoolboys representative Luke Tuialii comes in at centre for the Blues in place of Josh Billing, while Jonah Anderson replaces Connor Williams at five eighth. Williams is a very big loss, but Anderson is a highly rated Raiders junior. The Warriors are largely unchanged.

My tip: Blues.

2024 Season record: Blues 10 and 2, 2 draws (1st, +254)
Warriors 5 and 8 (6th, -120)
Form: Blues WWLWW
Warriors WLLLL
Attacking record: Blues 38, Warriors 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 19, Warriors 26 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 7 Blues 34 defeated Warriors 22 at Raiders Belconnen

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Preview

Image

The four finalists in the 2024 Canberra Raiders Cup have been decided. The Blues, Kangaroos, Rams and Sharks will battle it out for the premiership title.

The top two spots, which come with a valuable second bite at the cherry, are still up for grabs. The Sharks can only finish in fourth. But the Blues, Roos and Rams can all still win the minor premiership. They can all finish in the top two.

The first placed Blues don't play this weekend and have only one game of the regular season left - against the Bushrangers in Round 18. They can at best finish on 26 competition points. They do have another advantage, however. They have the best points differential in the league (+308).

The Kangaroos moved into second place after their win over the Bushrangers last Saturday. They are level on 22 competition points with the Rams, but have the better points differential, to the tune of 29 points. The Roos have two matches remaining - against the Magpies and Bulldogs, both very winnable games. They too can finish on 26 competition points.

The Rams have matches against the Bulls and Magpies remaining. Both very winnable games. They too can finish on 26 competition points.

The minor premiership, the top two, could easily come down to points differential. The Roos have 65 points to make up, while the Rams are 94 points behind the Blues. So the Blues are in the box seat. Time will tell.

Gungahlin Bulls v Woden Rams

The Rams are coming off the bye, while the Bulls produced a 30-14 victory over the Bulldogs in Goulburn last week. Bulls winger Jesse Croker scored a remarkable four tries in the game, while fullback Charlie Henderson produced four try assists. Henderson set up Croker's first three tries in the first half, with a couple of short kicks and a long pass. He also produced a second half four pointer for Jeffery Pehara, with another great pass. Bulldogs winger Jesse Lacey bagged a double for the home team.

Rams coach Ash Barnes is probably a little worried about his team's recent form line. They are coming off a reasonably comfortable victory over the Warriors (36-10). But over the past month, they've had losses to two other top four teams - to the Kangaroos (20-12) in Round 13 and the Sharks (4-0) in Round 15. They did knock off an in-form Blues team (26-16) in Round 14, but they lost star five eighth Brendan Jimenez in that game. Jimenez will reportedly be back in time for the finals. In the meantime, Barnes will be hoping they have enough firepower in attack to get a win this week against the Bulls - and finish the regular season with a win over the Magpies. Their defence will help them get through. It is the best in the league.

Team news: Tre Holten-Williams returns in the halves for the Bulls, taking the No. 6 jersey. Ryan Grocott switches to halfback, replacing Blake Morschel. Simi Latu and Ryver Alker will start in the second row, while Todd Sherd comes in on the wing. For the Rams, Daniel Desmet takes over at five eighth, with Adam Lucas switching to hooker.

My tip: Rams.

2024 Season record: Bulls 3 and 12 (9th, -206)
Rams 11 and 3 (3rd, +214)
Form: Bulls WLLLW
Rams WLWLW
Attacking record: Bulls 17, Rams 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 31, Rams 12 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 8 Rams 28 defeated Bulls 0 at Phillip Oval
2023 Round 13 Rams 50 defeated Bulls 28 at Phillip Oval
2023 Round 4 Rams 12 defeated Bulls 10 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

Belconnen Sharks v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Sharks played out a 30 all draw with the Magpies last weekend at Walker Park. The Sharks went to a 30-18 lead with 13 minutes left on the clock, thanks to a 100 metre try to Connor Massen. A try out of dummy half for Yass hooker Charlie Woolford brought the home team closer. And were the locals happy when centre Waisale Nayavucere scored off a Marty Smith kick ahead, in the shadows of full time? They certainly were. The Woolford conversion levelled the scores. The Sharks were given one final chance, when Belconnen second rower Jacob Piper appeared to charge down a Marty Smith kick. Piper ran away with the ball and planted it over the line for what would have been the winning try, but the referee ruled a knock on.

While the draw was enough to cement their place in the finals, coach Zac Patch won't have been happy with the recent form line. They produced a gutsy 4-0 win over the Rams three weeks ago, in miserably cold and wet conditions. But they've also had recent losses to the Blues (32-26) and Kangaroos (38-20).

The Bushrangers are coming off a 34-12 loss to the Kangaroos at Freebody Oval last Saturday. The Roos started fast, scoring three tries in the opening 15 minutes, to take an 18-0 lead. With Queanbeyan forward Josh Ayers in the sin bin, Tuggeranong's No. 14 Rhys Djerke scored two tries in the space of three minutes - right before the break. That reduced the Kangaroos' lead to six. But it was all Queanbeyan in the second half. Roos captain-coach Sam Williams conducted proceedings as usual, with tries to Brayden Draber, Williams and Robert Sheffield producing a comfortable victory.

This is a clash between fourth and fifth. It won't be an easy game for Belconnen. But if the Sharks are going to do anything in the finals, it is a match they have to win.

Team news: Tristan Eldridge switches to fullback for the Sharks, with Deakin Bright to partner Jacob Piper in the centres. Owen Hromow and Harrison Leadbitter will start in the second row, with Sonny Tupuola switching to lock. Liam Oakley moves back to hooker for the Bushrangers.

My tip: Sharks.

2024 Season record: Sharks 8 and 5, 1 draw (4th, +85)
Bushrangers 6 and 8 (5th, -68)
Form: Sharks LWWLD
Bushrangers LLWWL
Attacking record: Sharks 26, Bushrangers 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 20, Bushrangers 23 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 8 Sharks 22 defeated Bushrangers 18 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 13 Bushrangers 30 defeated Sharks 14 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 4 Bushrangers 28 defeated Sharks 22 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

Yass Magpies v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

It has been good to see the Magpies show some late season spark, producing two wins and a draw in their past five matches. They've been the cellar dwellers for a while, but they have now climbed out of last place on the ladder. It has been good reward for coach Adam Kyle who will stand down from the role at the end of the season. He's had a couple of tough years.

However, it is hard to see the Magpies standing in the way of a gathering freight train, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The mid season arrival of playmaker Lachlan Bristow has added a whole extra dimension to the Kangaroos' attack. The Blues are the No. 1 attacking team - averaging 39 points scored per match. But the Roos are not far behind in that department. I expect the Roos will win this one, big.

Team news: Both teams are largely unchanged.

My tip: Kangaroos.

2024 Season record: Magpies 3 and 10, 1 draw (8th, -228)
Kangaroos 10 and 2, 2 draws (1st, +308)
Form: Magpies WLWLD
Kangaroos WWWWW
Attacking record: Magpies 18, Kangaroos 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 35, Kangaroos 16 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 8 Kangaroos 58 defeated Magpies 0 at Freebody Oval
2023 Round 13 Kangaroos 64 defeated Magpies 10 at Walker Park
2023 Round 4 Kangaroos 24 defeated Magpies 16 at Freebody Oval

West Belconnen Warriors v Goulburn Bulldogs

Sadly for these two teams, this match is a dead rubber. The Warriors are now on a five game losing streak and are coming off a 54-0 loss to the Blues. The Blues scored 10 tries, with half Dylan McLachlan scoring two tries and setting up a number of others. Blues forwards Daetyn Tanuvasa and Allan Wratten also got doubles. They Warriors have also lost big to the Kangaroos (56-6) and Rams (36-10) recently. The Bulldogs haven't had much fun lately either. They're on a three game losing streak - having fallen to the Sharks (24-18), Blues (42-10) and Bulls (30-14). There is not a lot separating these teams on the numbers. The Bulldogs have shown a hint of better recent form.

Team news: Calab Edwards takes over at fullback and captain from Ryan McQueen for the Warriors, while Jye Rushton will start at hooker. Andrew McDonald comes in on the wing. For the Bulldogs, Dillon Rota will start at fullback, with Nicholas Cornish switching to halfback. Bailey Sassall replaces Tyler Cornish at lock. William Russell and Matthew Williams-Freeman have been added to the backs.

My tip: Bulldogs.

2024 Season record: Warriors 5 and 9 (6th, -174)
Bulldogs 4 and 10 (7th, -174)
Form: Warriors LLLLL

Sharks dominate on home turf

The Belconnen Sharks secured a phenomenal 54-10 victory over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on Saturday afternoon at NSWRL HQ.

It's an important win for the Sharks as they needed to re-gain confidence before finals following disappointing performances in their previous two matches. Meanwhile, the Bushrangers only had pride to play for, and will be disappointed with the final result.

Sharks captain-coach Zac Patch earned man of the match honors, playing a pivotal role in driving his team's momentum and providing direction in their relentless attacking performance.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Preview

Image

It is the final round of the regular season in the 2024 Canberra Raiders Cup. The outcome of three games will determine the minor premiers, the top two. The Blues, Kangaroos and Rams fill the top three places on the ladder - and presently they are only separated by points differential.

The Blues are in the box seat for the minor premiership, while the Blues and Kangaroos are in the box seat for the crucial top two spots. The Blues' advantage over the Roos in terms of points differential is not much - just 11 points. I have a suspicion that the Roos might actually be only seven points behind, as I think that the result of the Round 6 clash between the Kangaroos and Bulls might be incorrectly recorded in the official results. It is listed as a 44-8 win for the Roos, but I think the Bulls only scored one try. It showed 44-4 on the scoreboard on the ground at the end of the game. I could be wrong... In any case... The Rams' points differential is a fair way behind the Roos - to the tune of 39 points.

The top three are all favoured to win their matches this week. It's most likely that they'll all finish on 26 competition points. In that case it'll all come down to the margins of victory on Saturday. Of course, an upset or two could change things significantly. By 4:40pm this Saturday, we'll know for sure.

Woden Rams v Yass Magpies

The Rams should win this match. They need to win this match, and win it big. They're a way behind the other two contenders for the minor premiership and top two - as far as points differential goes. So, in all liklihood, the margin will count. But the Rams players can't go into the game with that in their minds. They just need to win, first and foremost. The eighth placed Magpies have avoided the wooden spoon after some good, late season performances. They forced the fourth placed Sharks into a recent draw. They will be looking to finish the season strongly in the final game for Adam Kyle as coach - and bounce back from a heavy defeat at the hands of the Kangaroos (66-12) last Saturday.

The Rams are coming off a 44-0 victory over the Gungahlin Bulls. It was the Bulls' last game of the season - and the loss consigned them to the wooden spoon. Rams winger Michael Geiger scored four tries, while his fellow winger, Koko Salim got a double. Let's not forget the 0. The Rams are the best defensive team in the league. An average of just 11 points per match conceded is better than NRL team in any year that I can remember. It's even more rare at this level of rugby league. It is a trademark of any Ash Barnes coached team.

Team news: Michael Geiger moves to centre for the Rams, replacing Gideon Afemui, who is out for two weeks. Sam Gash has been added on the wing. Chevi Ellis comes into the second row. For the Magpies, Bayley Maher replaces Noah Collins on the wing. There are no changes to the Yass starting pack.

My tip: Rams.

2024 Season record: Rams 12 and 3 (3rd, +258)
Magpies 3 and 11, 1 draw (8th, -282)
Form: Rams LWLWW
Magpies LWLDL
Attacking record: Rams 28, Magpies 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 11, Magpies 37 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 9 Rams 22 defeated Magpies 12 at Walker Park
2023 Round 10 Rams 46 defeated Magpies 6 at Phillip Oval
2023 Round 1 Rams 38 defeated Magpies 36 at Walker Park

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Queanbeyan Blues

The first placed Blues will be hoping to wrap up the minor premiership, in a contest that shapes as the match of the round. The Bushies have missed the finals, but were the "best of the rest" in 2024. Tuggeranong was beaten by the Sharks by a big margin (54-10) last weekend. Their only tries came through winger Samuel Kimori-Edmonds and bench player Ben Drayton. They will be wanting to produce a good final performance of the year.

The Blues have engineered a massive turnaround this season. Last year, they weren't far off the wooden spoon, winning only three games. They avoided the spoon only on points differential. They even forfeited a match, due to lack of numbers. But new coach Jeremy Braun and halfback Dylan McLachlan have restored the status of the Blues as one of the powerhouses of the competition. They are the No. 1 attacking team - and showed why in their last outing in Round 16, beating the Warriors 54-0. Ten tries to nil. They will be fresh off the bye and should be too strong on Saturday.

Team news: Joshua Tape comes in on the wing for the Bushrangers, replacing Zachary-Blake Carew. Despite being named for the Raiders in NSW Cup, Josh Billing and Kalani Skipps have been selected as the centres for the Blues. Goal kicker George Morseu is out, replaced on the wing by Connor Martin. Connor Williams returns at five eighth.

My tip: Blues at home.

2024 Season record: Bushrangers 6 and 9 (5th, -112)
Blues 11 and 2, 2 draws (3rd, +88)
Form: Bushrangers LWWLL
Blues WLWWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 18, Blues 39 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 25, Blues 18 points conceded per match

2023 Round 10 Blues 32 drew Bushrangers 32 at Seiffert Oval
2023 Round 1 Bushrangers 38 defeated Blues 12 at Greenway Oval

West Belconnen Warriors v Belconnen Sharks

The Sharks have already cemented a fourth placed finish. They'll still want to make a good showing in this match as they head towards the business end of the season. The Warriors broke a five game losing streak last weekend, with a 38-10 defeat of the Bulldogs at Kippax. Winger Andrew McDonald bagged a double, with West Belconnen crossing for seven tries. The Sharks produced a big, 54-10 win over the Bushrangers last weekend - scoring a total of 10 tries. Fullback Tristan Eldridge and centre Jacob Piper both scored a brace. The Sharks should be too strong in this one.

Team news: Bobby Roberts and Ryan McQueen form the halves partnership for the Warriors, with Caleb Edwards at fullback. Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai returns at centre for the Sharks, with Deakin Bright switching to the wing.

My tip: Sharks.

2024 Season record: Warriors 6 and 9 (6th, -146)
Sharks 9 and 5, 1 draw (4th, +129)
Form: Warriors LLLLW
Sharks WWLDW
Attacking record: Warriors 17, Sharks 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 26, Sharks 19 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2024 Round 9 Sharks 34 defeated Warriors 12 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2023 Minor Semi Final Sharks 30 defeated Warriors 28 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 18 Warriors 26 defeated Sharks 18 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 9 Sharks 26 defeated Warriors 10 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Goulburn Bulldogs

The 2023 premiers, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos have put themselves right in the frame for back to back titles. A fair number of players moved on at the end of last season, but captain-coach Sam Williams has quickly rebuilt the Roos. The mid season arrival of five eighth Lachlan Bristow has been critical to the rebuild. The experienced playmaker has brought an extra dimension to the attack. Last weekend, the Roos beat the Magpies, 66-12, at Walker Park. They scored 11 tries in the process, with veteran forward, Josh Ayers scoring four in his 300th first grade game. Raiders junior Jaxen Yow also got a double.

A big win against the Bulldogs could see the Roos take the minor premiership, depending on the result in the clash between the Blues and Bushrangers. But at the very least, a win should wrap up a crucial top two finish.

The Bulldogs are on a four game losing streak, after falling to the Warriors (38-10) last weekend. Coach Mitch Cornish will want to see a good finish from his team for season 2024. But I cannot see the Roos taking their eye off the ball in this contest.

Team news: The Bulldogs are largely unchanged. Lachlan Bristow is out for the Roos. He is replaced by Jaxen Yow. Lucas Thomson has been named in the second row and Bailey Nash at centre. Jake Kiely is back on the wing.

My tip: Kangaroos.

2024 Season record: Kangaroos 11 and 2, 2 draws (2nd, +297)

76!!! That’s a shellacking!
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup finals are here! The top three teams finished level on 26 competition points - with only points differential splitting them. It was a points shoot out between the three teams last Saturday, with the Kangaroos piling on an incredible 76 points to four in their win over the Bulldogs - taking the minor premiership in the process. The Blues put a comparatively modest 50 points on the scoreboard. Their margin of 38 points over the Bushrangers secured a top two finish. Meanwhile, the Rams won, 52-22, over the Magpies - but at the end of the day, it was not enough.

All that has set up a couple of blockbuster semi finals this weekend. The third placed Rams take on the fourth placed Sharks in a sudden death clash at Greenway on Saturday. Then on Sunday, it is a Queanbeyan derby, with the Kangaroos hosting the Blues at Freebody.

Woden Rams v Belconnen Sharks

The Rams were widely tipped to be a contender right from the get go this season. Premiership winning coach Ash Barnes returned after a successful stint with the Raiders in the junior grades. Strong recruitment netted star second rower Ron Leapai and rugby union half Brendan Jimenez, both former Rams. And Woden has spent a lot of time at the top of the ladder this year.

An injury to Jimenez in the Rams' Round 14 win over the Blues - after he'd scored three tries - has put a bit of a spanner in the works for Woden. At that stage, they were in first place on the ladder. They lost to the Sharks the next week, 4-0, in horribly cold and wet conditions at Bruce. Ultimately, that has cost the Rams the minor premiership. The Rams' only other defeats this year - two of them - have come against the Kangaroos. If the Rams are to advance and take the major title, they are going to have to overcome the Roos at some stage.

Since their loss to the Sharks, the Rams have posted big wins over the Warriors (36-10), Bulls (44-0) and Magpies (52-22). The 22 points conceded to Yass last weekend might worry Ash Barnes a bit.

Sharks captain-coach Zac Patch returned to Canberra in the middle of 2022, and he's been critical to turning around the fortunes of the Belconnen outfit. The Sharks made the finals last year and built strongly for 2024, recruiting the likes of Tommy Watego, Tristan Eldridge, Deakin Bright and Connor Massen. They have produced 10 wins, but have only one against the other finalists - the 4-0 win over the Rams. They subsequently lost to the Kangaroos (38-20) and only managed a draw (30-30) against the Magpies. They have had some confidence boosting wins in the past couple of weeks against the Bushrangers (54-10) and Warriors (38-20).

The Sharks certainly have the ability to get a win on Saturday. Patch and fellow playmaker Matt Woolnough know how to steer a footy team around the park. They have a good pack, with Watego, Robert Aratangi and Sonny Tupuola having strong seasons. Fullback Tristan Eldridge has 14 tries so far, while winger Massen has 10.

The Rams have their own strike weapons in Jimenez (14 tries), fullback Daine Spencer (13), Koko Salim (12) and Gideon Afemui (9). Goal kicker Afemui, however, will be missing. The Rams have an able back up kicker in Sam Gash. The Rams have one other advantage. They have the best defensive record in the league. They have conceded just 12 points on average per game. That's a record that any NRL club would love to have. Based on the numbers and recent form lines, I think the Rams might have enough to take this one out.

Team news: The Rams have named Brendan Jimenez on the bench in the No. 17. The starting team is unchanged. For the Sharks, Deakin Bright switches to centre with Yuri Hromow coming in on the wing. Owen Hromow has been selected for the Raiders in Jersey Flegg. He is replaced in the second row by Davey Williams. In a surprise, Sonny Tupuola has been named on the bench, with Jesse Bellchambers to start at lock.

Rams: 1. Daine Spencer 2. Koko Salim 3. Michael Geiger 4. Lachie Eveston 5. Sam Gash 6. Daniel Desmet 7. Josh Fattore 8. Trai Henderson 9. Adam Lucas 10. Bradley Prior 11. Scott Swanson 12. Jesse Martin (c) 13. Daniel Prior

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Queanbeyan Kangaroos. Two powerhouses of the Canberra Raiders Cup. They have 34 premierships between them, the Blues 26, the Roos eight.

Last year, the Kangaroos almost went undefeated. They lost only twice. They were almost completely dominant on their way to the 2023 premiership title. Across town, the Blues were in a world of pain. They only avoided the wooden spoon on points differential. They had to forfeit one match due to lack of numbers.

This year, the Kangaroos have found life to be a bit more difficult, while there has been a remarkable turnaround from the Blues. This year, there has been almost been nothing between the two teams.

The Blues were in first place with one game left in the regular season. The Kangaroos swept in, in the final round, to take the minor premiership and relegate the Blues to second.

Two meetings this year between the teams. Two draws.

In Round 2, the Blues produced a stunning comeback in the final stages of the clash at Seiffert Oval. They trailed the Kangaroos, 26-10, at the 65th minute - and it seemed like the men in maroon were cruising to a first up win. But the Blues then scored four tries in the space of 10 minutes to take a 32-26 lead at the 75th minute. Bench player Connor Martin scored a double in no time at all - and centre Josh Billing and fullback Connor Williams followed up.

The Kangaroos were not finished, however. They worked their way up the length of the field in the final minute or two, with Roos second rower Jesse Dent scoring his second try of the day. Kangaroos captain-coach Sam Williams converted from the sideline - after the final hooter - to secure a 32 all draw.

In Round 11, the Blues made another big comeback. The Kangaroos seemed to be well in control mid-way through the second half, leading 24-6. Then came a critical turning point. The Roos conceded four penalties in a row defending their own goal line - and the referee ran out of patience, sending fullback Jaxen Yow to the sin bin. Blues bench forward Atu Tupou crashed over the try line, right after the Kangaroos were reduced to 12 men.

Next, a long pass from Blues halfback Dylan McLachlan set Tyrell Kimori-Edmond on a 60 metre run to the try line. Yow returned to the field with a couple of minutes remaining, with the Roos still leading by six. But the Blues kept playing frantic football. With just seconds left on the clock, a McLachlan grubber produced a four pointer for Connor Williams, right beside the posts. George Morseu's conversion after the siren forced an extraordinary 24 all draw.

McLachlan and new coach Jeremy Braun have been critical to the rebuild, to the revival of the Blues. At the Kangaroos, Sam Williams had to deal with a fair bit of off season turnover in his squad. They had some unexpected losses against the Bushrangers (16-14) and Bulldogs (28-26). But then the Roos were strengthened by the mid season arrival of experienced hooker/half Lachlan Bristow. He had just finished a stint in France, and winning a title with second division club, Villefranche XIII Aveyron.

Mostly partnering Williams in the halves, Bristow's added an extra dimension to the Kangaroos. Since Bristow's arrival, the Roos have gone on a seven game winning streak. They have scored an average of 48 points in those seven games. It is no coincidence. The Roos have been undefeated since Round 9.

The Blues are no slouches in attack themselves. They finished No 1 in the league for most points scored. Blues centre/second rower Josh Billing is the league's leading try scorer (17) for 2024. A lot of tries as well for Dylan McLachlan (13), Josh Pokoney (11) and Connor Williams (11).

Who wins on Sunday? I've got a feeling it'll be the Roos at Freebody. But it is anyone's game. Unmissable.

Team news: Lachlan Bristow is back at five eighth for the Kangaroos, with Jaxen Yow taking the No. 14 jersey. Lucas Thomson switches back to centre, with Jesse Dent returning to the second row. Ryan Dodson will start at lock.

Josh Billing and Kalani Skipps have both been named by the Blues, despite being named earlier in the week for the Raiders in NSW Cup. It is a sign they will not be required in Cup, but time will tell how that plays out. Billing got a double for the Raiders in Cup last week and really deserves opportunity at a higher level. The Blues would no doubt love to have him if available. Cypria Ale and Jayden Clarkson have been named as starting props. Australian Schoolboys representative Luke Tuialii comes in at centre.

Kangaroos: 1. Kaine Pagura 2. Tommy Williams 3. Brayden Draber 4. Lucas Thomson 5. Jake Kiely 6. Lachlan Bristow 7. Sam Williams (c) 8. Troy Whiley 9. Lachlan Ingram 10. Aidan Woods 11. Joshua Ayers 12. Jesse Dent 13. Ryan Dodson

14. Jaxen Yow 16. Bayley Hitchcock 17. Adam Barlow 25. Michael Dodson

Dylan McLachlan wins the 2024 Les McIntyre Medal

Dylan McLachlan of the Queanbeyan Blues has won the 2024 Les McIntyre Medal, recognised as the best and fairest player of the Canberra Raiders Cup competition. The talented halfback narrowly edged out finalists Sam Williams and Liam Oakley, securing the win by just two points.
