Well done to the Colts! First time I have watched them, I thought they looked the more skilled and mature team and they played with really good structure. I was really impressed with their standard of play and they would've been kicking themselves if they lost that I'd say.
The kicking game in particular was the big difference, Anderson has an outstanding boot on him. Brophy does stand out as the star for the way he steers the side and that last play was class. I also though Croker and Tuialii look like exciting prospects. Watkins and Hromow looked good in the forwards but I have to admit I couldn't tell one from the other when it came to the forwards having not seen them before.
Out of interest, is the side formally part of the Raiders pathways? Do they appoint the coach for example.

Agree with a lot of that. Given the Colts were missing their best forward in Jesse Milin on suspension they did very well. Great to see.NoMan wrote:Well done to the Colts! Out of interest, is the side formally part of the Raiders pathways? Do they appoint the coach for example.
The Canberra District Rugby League effectively runs the Monaro Colts. And the Raiders basically run the CDRL. The CDRL is based at Raiders HQ and funded by the Raiders Group.
Because the age groups are slightly different (Laurie Daley Cup is Under 18s and Andrew Johns Cup is Under 16s, SG Ball and Harold Matthews is Under 19s and Under 17s) players move through Colts and the Raiders system interchangeably.
So a lot of the Laurie Daley Colts this year were Raiders 2023 Matts graduates, while last year’s Laurie Daley Colts are now Raiders SG Ball.
When there’s an injury in Raiders junior reps, Colts players often come in. Trials and squads have recently been chosen cooperatively. Effectively the Raiders are running four male junior reps teams.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a disappointing, 54-16, loss to the St George Dragons at Forshaw Park, Sydney on Sunday. The Dragons were in third place coming into the game, the Raiders in eighth. Canberra had to win to stay in touch with the top six. But their finals chances have now been extinguished. There are now too many teams ahead of them - and their points differential has taken a battering.
The Dragons scored the opening three tries, to take an 18-0 lead after 13 minutes. A try to Canberra hooker, Xavier Cacciotti in the 15th minute gave Canberra some hope. But three more tries to the Dragons saw the home team take a 36-6 lead to the half time break. That was game over. The Raiders produced a couple of second half tries - to second rower Mahonri Tiotala and centre Sam Gash. But the Dragons didn't let up. In the end, they scored a total of nine tries, with winger Jesse Williams getting a double.
The Raiders have fallen to ninth place on the ladder, two competition points away from the fifth placed Eels and sixth placed Steelers - and one point behind both the Magpies and Sharks. Even if results in Round 9 were to somehow fall perfectly for the Raiders, which is unlikely, their poor points differential will cost them a top six finish. The Raiders will still want to finish strongly when they meet the Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval on Easter Friday.
In the last decade, the Raiders have played the Rabbitohs only three times in this grade, all at home. The teams met at Northbourne Oval back in 2014, which has now been redeveloped into Raiders HQ. Lachlan Croker and Zac Woolford both scored tries in the 38-0 victory. The 2015 contest featured Cameron Murray and Keaon Kolomatangi for the Rabbitohs, while Nick Cotric was in Canberra's line up.
The 2024 Rabbitohs are coming off a 34-18 loss to the Newcastle Knights at Cessnock on Saturday. The match was all tied up at half time, 12-12. But the Knights produced five second half tries, with centre Logan Aoke scoring a hat trick and winger Sosaia Latu a double. South Sydney has had recent wins over the Bears (38-6) and Magpies (42-6).

Team news: The Raiders have made significant changes to their line up, with a number of the Monaro Colts team which won the Laurie Daley Cup last weekend included. James Croker, Harry Hudson, Jonah Anderson, Mitchell Brophy have all made the step up to the SG Ball side. Ten players, including Xavier Cacciotti, Keahn Skipps, Ethan Alaia and Owen Hromow, are on the list of "outs". Given the Raiders' finals hopes are over in SG Ball, the club has presumably decided on an early changing of the guard - and to give some players the Easter weekend off. We can expect a good number of this year's SG Ball squad to now be promoted into Flegg.

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Raiders posted a good, 34-14 win over the St George Dragons in Sydney on Sunday, overpowering the home team in the second half.
The Raiders scored three tries in the space of 10 minutes in the first half, taking a 16-6 lead at the 20 minute mark. Fullback Cooper Johnston scored in the 9th minute - making a run of over 100 metres - and that was quickly followed by a four pointer for late inclusion on the wing, Joey Charles. The try for Charles was set up by a good cut out pass from Hardy Glover, who was switched late, from centre to five eighth. Glover then crossed himself in the 19th minute.
A double to Dragons winger Ahmad Assaad either side of half time saw the home team lead, 16-14, two minutes into the second half. However Canberra scored the next three tries straight to secure the Green Machine's second victory of the season. Kruger Roache, who was shifted to centre, got a double, while fellow centre Preston Smallwood finished things off. Half Jamie Cowling set up the second Roache try with a good long pass, while his kick ahead produced the four pointer for Smallwood.
The Raiders have been out of contention for the 2024 finals for some time - and will host the 12th placed Rabbitohs at Seiffert Oval in their last match of the season. The Raiders have not played the Rabbitohs in this grade since 2018, when Junior Tupou and Clay Webb were running around in lime green and Joseph Suaalii was in Souths colours. South Sydney has the same season record as the Raiders, but are one step ahead on the competition ladder, based on points differential. They have a better record in both attack and defence.

AT A GLANCE: The Tarsha Gale Raiders produced a 34-10 victory over the St George Dragons at Forshaw Park, Sydney, on Sunday afternoon. Prop Claudia Finau, fullback Elise Simpson and outside back, Lara Cosgrove all produced doubles in the six tries to two win.
Canberra took a 16-6 lead to the half time break. A try to Dragons interchange player, Manaia Maxwell-Puohotaua saw the home team draw within six in the second minute of the second half. But that was as good as it would get for the Dragons. The Raiders scored three tries in the space of 10 minutes to wrap up the match in the home stretch. Finau completed up her double in the 48th minute, while Cosgrove scored the final two tries of the game.
Despite the win, the Raiders are now out of finals contention, as they head into the final round of the regular season. They are three points adrift of the sixth placed Sharks. In Round 9, the Raiders host the 11th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. The Rabbitohs have won only once this season, the Round 6 clash with the Bears (22-8). They are coming off a 26-8 loss to the Wests Tigers. Centre Shannelle Lyons scored all of the Rabbitohs points, bagging two tries.
