No SG Ball trials as the club has strong depth and numbers of players in that age group.

Where the top Queensland juniors in 2023 are heading

NRL clubs have swooped to snap up Queensland schoolboys, with the Gold Coast Titans, Brisbane Broncos most active in the Langer Trophy and Dolphins and Cowboys leading the charge in Dolphins and Payne Cups respectively. From south of the border, Canterbury, South Sydney and Canberra were the most active clubs when it came to snapping up Queensland schoolboy talent from the Langer Trophy, Payne and Dolphins’ Cup.

Players signed by the Canberra Raiders:

Ipswich State High School

Mahonri Tiotala Position: Forward

Second rower, Souths Logan Magpies, Mal Meninga Cup 2023, Ipswich SHS 2023 Allan Langer Trophy, three year contract signed in early 2022

Kesaia Su’a Position: Centre

Su’a was signed by the Raiders from St Paul’s College in Auckland and will play for Ipswich SHS in the Langer Trophy this season. The youngster plays every match with the thoughts of his grandparents, Nia (grandma) and Pana (grandad), in his heart and playing away from them is the one regret he has in an otherwise successful move to Ipswich. But he loves the atmosphere at Ipswich and now he has bypassed the early nerves of moving to a new country, he was starting to blossom as a player.

Marsden State High

Izayah Petricevich Position: Wing

Marsden High Langer Cup, Burleigh Bears Mal Meninga Cup this year, on Gold Coast Titans books, also a basketball player.

“Winger Izayah can reach top gear quickly, and sustain that speed. And Marsden also has a bolter when it comes to pace. “Will Semu when he is on. He can move,’’ said Marsden SHS coach Matt Hartigan.

“The quicksilver Izayah Petricevich will be that much older and wiser during the 2023 Langer Trophy school season with Marsden SHS after gaining valuable experience playing with Coombabah SHS in last season’s competition.”

Keebra Park State High

Taylor Withington Position: Forward

Middle forward, lock or prop, Northern Rivers Titans, captain, 2023 Laurie Daley Cup

Mabel Park State High

Jaycob Kingston-Francis Position: Centre

The Raiders swooped to sign the Wynnum Manly junior when he was playing lock for the Seagulls under 16s side last season. But the Mabel Park SHS Langer Trophy player has moved to centre this season in the Seagulls Meninga Cup side. He has always been a Raiders supporter and his idol is Joseph Tapine.

Wavel State High

Keyarn Pene Position: Centre

He was originally signed by Canberra in 2022 as a centre after scouts watched him play up in his age group in the Connell Challenge under 16 competition at Norths Devils. But this year he moved to five-eighth where he again shone. He has agility, is a good mover who has great hands.

Canberra Raiders Junior Representatives draw for 2024 announced

The NSWRL has announced the draws for the 2024 Junior Representative season.

Sixteen teams will contest the SG Ball Cup and 17 will participate in the Harold Matthews Cup - with the Storm and Warriors entering new teams in the latter competition in 2024. The Raiders play only three of their eight matches at home in Harold Matthews, while there will be four home games for the SG Ball team.

The NSWRL is converting the Lisa Fiaola Cup for Under 17 female players into a full, formal competition in 2024. The Raiders, however, will not be one of the 13 teams participating. Canberra has established an Academy program for this age group. And the Raiders will continue in Tarsha Gale Cup for Under 19 female players. Canberra's Tarsha Gale team will have four home matches in 2024.

The region's junior representative teams, the Monaro Colts and Riverina Bulls will again turn out in the Laurie Daley Cup and Andrew Johns Cup. The Colts include players from the Canberra district down to the NSW Far South Coast, with home games played at NSWRL HQ at Bruce in Canberra.

Presently, the Steelers lead 28-4 in Tarsha Gale Cup.

And that’s the full time score.

Harold Matthews now heading out for the warm up.

Earlier, the Raiders drew with the Steelers, 16-16, in the Lisa Fiaola Cup trial. The Raiders not participating in the competition this year, but the trial games are part of a development program for that grade.

6th min TRY STEELERS. It’s the result of the Raiders knocking down a pass near half way, giving the Steelers a second set of six in a row. Couldn’t stop them on the last from close range.

11th min TRY STEELERS The Steelers kicked for the line on the last and the winger had not dropped back… The Raiders fullback had to take it out to ward off the chaser. Steelers ball 10 metres out and an easy try on the second tackle. No kick for goal in this trial.

Harold Matthews… end of the third period…

Illawarra Steelers 20
Canberra Raiders 8

Too many errors from Canberra, Illawarra good in that department, plus they had much more threat in attack. The Steelers bigger physically as well.

Looks like we’re going around for another 20 minutes. SG Ball will be a late start.
