Eels half Ethan Sanders agrees to terms with Raiders for three year deal from 2025
Canberra Raiders in battle to sign star young Parramatta Eels half Ethan Sanders
Penrith and Canberra are locked in a battle to prise boom half Ethan Sanders out of Parramatta. Sanders is regarded as one of the best young playmakers in the game. He has already spoken to the Panthers and Raiders as they look to add youth and quality to their playmaking ranks.
The Eels are confident they can keep Sanders, although his path to first grade is blocked by a pair of big names on lucrative long-term deals.

The Raiders also said to be considering Lachlan Lam.

Can he do the hard carries?
We promise to debut him in 2028

I like this. And like the idea of Lachlan Lam as well. Was out of his depth when young but he’s a good player imo.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.
Re: Canberra Raiders in battle to sign star young Eels half Ethan Sanders
No but he can lead a team around. In fact they call him Colonel Sanders.Canberra Milk wrote: ↑June 8, 2023, 7:21 pm Can he do the hard carries?

Finger licking good.
Re: Canberra Raiders in battle to sign star young Eels half Ethan Sanders
Lachlan Lam was very good for Leigh the other night, albeit against Wakefield who are one of the worst professional teams in history but still

I also dont mind the idea of a dart throw at Lam
As for the kids, it's a numbers game, get as many as we can and hopefully one of them pans out. So yeah all for making a strong push for a very talented kid.

Salary cap turnover. Good teams have to lose good players and are always hoping to improve and looking towards the future.Seiffert82 wrote:Why on earth are the Panthers interested?

I’m not sold on Lam at NRL level. Looks a level 20% too fast for him.

Cross that bridge when you come to it. Stack the pipeline with talent, understand most wont pan out... but you increase your odds
What is the worst case scenario? You get your pick of the best players.

I think the worst that happens is nuclear war takes out the power grids and we all end up living like rats in the wreckage.Botman wrote:What's the worst that happens? They have TOO many great young halves?Seiffert82 wrote: ↑June 8, 2023, 8:20 pm Why on earth are the Panthers interested?

Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

If this kid has all the early indicators of being a quality half we should load up an offer that dwarfs what Parra and Penrith put forward

I fully understand the whole stockpiling talent theory, but this would have to be a specific plan to replace Luai.bonehead wrote:they have jack cogger and kurt falls as their next in line, neither are elite talents, they lost isaiya Katoa and niwhai puru wo were next big thingsSeiffert82 wrote:Why on earth are the Panthers interested?

NRL isn't like an NFL squad where you have huge depth in key positions. The pathway to an NRL team is like a pyramid. Now that Sanders is like 20 or 21 next season you can't just park him in a junior development team and see what happens.
As you say, the Panthers are already losing good talent to other clubs. That in itself proves you can't just stockpile talented 20 year old key position players. It simply doesn't work like that. His manager would absolutely be aware that his client won't want to get lost in reserves for 3 years.
As we see with people here losing their minds over Savage being stuck in NSW Cup.

Panthers have been steadily losing talent for the past couple of years and will continue to do so as their guys comes off contract and value increases. Crichton is already gone for next year. Edwards and Luai up for renewal and it will be difficult to retain both. They need more players coming through to offset the losses at the top

Yeah, but the point is they are losing talent because they can retain all that talent.
You don't sign a guy like this as your 5th string option if you can't keep hold of the guys you already have.

Not sure I'm understanding your point. They are looking 2+ years in advance here. I don't think they would plan on him being 5th on the depth chart then.Seiffert82 wrote: ↑June 9, 2023, 10:51 am Yeah, but the point is they are losing talent because they can retain all that talent.

No young half would play under the destroyer of halves.

If the plan is to sign this guy to specifically replace Jerome Luai in 2025 after Luai's contract expires then yeah, well played Penrith.Northern Raider wrote:Not sure I'm understanding your point. I just don't buy that you can sign a quality 20 year old halfback with the intent of stockpiling talent as Botman and Nicko are suggesting.
The pathway to make it through the Penrith system is currently much harder now than at just about any other club. I'm just surprised Penrith are in the mix given the young players they are are already losing.

Re: Canberra Raiders in battle to sign star young Eels half Ethan Sanders
The panthers have two rep halves, that’s 3 games minimum they’re forced to using back ups
And Cleary seems to pick up injuries fairly regularly. They want high quality players to be able to come in and step up.
Good teams want good players.
The raiders, if they really want this guy, should be able to put an offer in that prices both parra and the panthers out given they’ll be paying back up money, and he’d probably be our starter

I've never seen this kid play but after what I saw tonight (and most of the year) sign him at all costs - we need a half desperately. We aren't going to sign a big name, best to have a crack at a youngster with a bit of hype about him.
Give us tragic fans something to hope about.

If he knows what's good for him, he'll look at Rocky's track record with halves and run screaming.

The Raiders are a good spot for a young half looking to play grade. Whether it be Lam trying to reestablish himself or this young trap.
The difference in pressure must be enormous.
Re: Canberra Raiders in battle to sign star young Eels half Ethan Sanders
Found an interesting article written at the end of last year.
Rookie Watch: Ethan Sanders
The hype around Ethan Sanders right now is only just starting to build and for the Parramatta Eels that is a very, very good thing. The young playmaker entered 2022 in his junior year of SG Ball eligibility (turning 18 in an U19s competition) and would quickly go on to become a core figure in the Jersey Flegg team. The significance of that feat should not be undersold – Sanders wasn’t just holding his own against young men up to three years older than him, he was often excelling.
