Expanded Peter Mulholland Cup to showcase young talent

Eight months after Patrician Brothers, Fairfield ended a title drought that dragged back to the halcyon schoolboy days of Greg Alexander, the Peter Mulholland Cup is back for 2023, bigger and better than ever. Four new teams have been added to the elite schoolboys competition, including Central Coast Sports College and Matraville Sports High School as well as Victorian duo Mount Ridley Secondary College and Victoria University Secondary College.

The expansion of the Peter Mulholland Cup includes an all-Victorian pool for the first time as the NRL aims to widen its development footprint south of the border. The illustrious competition is set to be streamed live through KommunityTV.

Erindale look to make big impression early against Illawarra

Erindale will be looking for a repeat of their thumping 2022 first round triumph over Illawarra when the two sides meet again in the 2023 Peter Mulholland Cup on Thursday. The Canberra-based team features some of the most talented juniors from across the Raiders junior rep system in SG Ball, Harold Matthews, as well as the Monaro Colts in the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cups.

“A lot of them have grown a lot through their junior reps work over the past few months,” Barnes said. “I think if we play to our potential we’ll be tough to beat. We put a good performance on the Illawarra side last year, so no doubt they’ll want to turn that around.”

MATCH REPORT: Erindale make big impression early against Illawarra

Erindale have flexed their muscles with a statement opening round victory over Illawarra, running away 38-8 winners in a dominant performance at Berkeley Sports Club on Thursday. Five-eighth Ethan Alaia was a standout performer for the visitors, picking up two first half tries and showcasing a mean stepping and running game.

“He’s got some frightening speed,” coach Ashley Barnes said about his young No.6. “He’s been playing a lot of hooker so he’s still adjusting to five-eighth. The more he plays there though the better he’s getting and he showed that today.”

Erindale College coach Ashley Barnes hasn’t been deceived by the margin of his side’s opening round Peter Mulholland Cup victory. He knows his side were ‘pretty poor’ with their discipline in the 38-8 success over Illawarra Sports and must improve on their travels against Matraville Sports.

“We’ve been able to look at areas of our game against Illawarra Sport that we want to improve and just really focus on getting better,” Barnes said.

Erindale scores nine tries in big defeat for Matraville Sports

The fight is on for top spot in central pool two after Erindale scored nine tries in a 50-0 win over Matraville Sports High School in the Peter Mulholland Cup on Thursday. Brock Apolevski and Ollie Bolatagaici planted two tries each, while fullback Sam Gash scored a try and kicked seven goals in a great individual display. Erindale will now face Patrician Brothers, Fairfield in a hotly-anticipated contest at Seiffert Oval on Tuesday, July 25.

Peter Mulholland Cup: Patrician Brothers Fairfield hit the road to face Erindale College

For Erindale coach Ashley Barnes and his team, the resumption of the 2023 Peter Mulholland Cup after the holiday break coincides with their biggest game of the year. It’s do-or-die when Erindale face reigning champions Patrician Brothers, Fairfield in a marquee NRL Schoolboys pool match at Seiffert Oval in Canberra on Tuesday.

"It’s going to be a big challenge, but one we’re really looking forward to. Basically, this game will reveal who comes out top of the pool - and progresses," he said.
