16 mins to go PENALTY RAIDERS for a lifting tackle in the red zone. Now held up over the line. Some great offloading from Canberra, but the set ends with a short attacking kick from Skipps defused by Penrith.

8 mins to go More great attack from Canberra, but the kick from Pattie the wrong option. The Raiders deserve a couple of more tries, but they just can’t find the right final play.

Raiders were running last going into this match so to beat a Top 4 side in Penrith was a very good result.
A number of players from this years SG Ball side have been moved up the age group to play Flegg.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced their fourth victory of the season on Saturday, defeating the third placed Penrith Panthers, 14-6, at Canberra Stadium. It's been a difficult year for the Green Machine in this grade, but the young outfit showed that some things are starting to click. They were impressive throughout in defence, while the new spine combination of Mitch Henderson and Jalen Afamasaga in the halves, and Keahn Skipps at fullback, looked good.

Recent second row recruit from the Panthers, Delahia Wigmore was the first to score in the ninth minute - with the Raiders taking advantage of a repeat set. The sideline conversion from Keahn Skipps gave the home team an early 6-0 lead. Just before the break, a cross field kick saw winger Kane Rushton score in the corner - delivering a 10 point advantage at half time.

In the 39th minute, a great run from centre Prinston Esera set up a try to Skipps - but he could not convert his own four pointer. The Raiders continued their good attack through the second half, but they could not quite convert their opportunities. And in the 64th minute, some fortunate rebounds allowed the Panthers to post their first points - a try to winger, Timothy Sielaff-Burns. Joseph Nohra converted, but that proved to be the final scoring play of the match.

The Raiders are still in 12th place on the ladder, but the team will have taken some confidence from Saturday's performance. They next meet the seventh placed Dragons. They beat the Sharks, 34-18, at Shark Park in their last outing. Fullback Benjamin Rumble and back rower Hamish Stewart both got doubles. The Dragons are now on a three game winning streak - including wins over the Raiders (30-20) and Storm (22-12).

Team news: Centres Prinston Esera and Jaxon Lavender, half Mitch Henderson and forwards Loghan Lewis and Jayden Clarkson have have all been named in NSW Cup, as well as Flegg. It's doubtful they'll play two days in a row... We can expect mass late changes. Tane Kiriona has been named at second row in this grade - and at 18 man in NSW Cup. Handling both of those duties is more achievable.

Jake Clydsdale is on duty with the NSW Under 19s Origin team this week. He will be replaced at starting prop by Eneseli Kamuta.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced a 20-16 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons at Centenary Field, Wollongong on Saturday. After a difficult season, it was the second win in a row for a Raiders team that had to deal with plenty of late changes.

The Raiders were first to score in the 5th minute - the result of a scrum play from half way. The shift to the left produced an overlap for winger Livai Kaloutolu, who charged down the touch line for a try in the corner. In the 25th minute, halfback Noah Ryan put in a short grubber to the try line, which was knocked on by the Dragons. Keahn Skipps was on the spot to ground the ball under the posts. Just before half time, dummy half Owen Pattie sent the ball left - with some smart cut outs from Jalen Afamasaga and Skipps putting Siamani Leuluai over the line out wide. It was a nice set move, with some good decoy running. The Green Machine took a 16-0 lead to the break.

Canberra went further in front in the second minute of the second half, when Leuluai bagged his double. Both of the Leuluai tries were scored while the Raiders were playing with only 12 men - after second rower Delahia Wigmore was sent to the sin bin in the 29th minute.

Fortunes turned, however. The Dragons scored two tries in the space of three minutes, with winger Dane Courtney crossing in the 47th minute and fullback Benjamin Rumble quickly following. Rumble grabbed his second of the afternoon with just over 10 minutes left - but Canberra was able to hold on to its four point lead in the final stages.

The Raiders are still in 12th place on the ladder, but they are equal with the Knights on 16 competition points - and are only two wins adrift of the sixth placed Rabbitohs. With six games left, there is still an opportunity to climb the ladder and make a strong finish to the season. They can make a start on that when they meet the 10th placed Tigers on Sunday.

The Tigers are coming off back to back wins - over the Eels (16-14) and Knights (24-16). But they also have recent losses to the Sharks (12-8), Sea Eagles (36-16) and Bulldogs (38-28). The two teams have not faced each other before in 2023, but will meet twice in the next month.

Team news: Jack Sandford comes into the side at centre, with Josh Billing moving back to the second row. Mitch Henderson returns at halfback, after making his NSW Cup debut for the club last week. Jaxon Lavender scored a try on his NSW Cup debut last week, but will partner Billing in the second row on Sunday. Jake Clydsdale will back up at starting prop from the Under 19s Origin, with Tahrell Feaveai dropping to the bench. Toby Thorburn returns at starting hooker, with Shaun Packer interchanging at dummy half. Jayden Clarkson replaces Tate Rhea at lock. Delahia Wigmore is out, while Jacob Piper moves back to the bench.

AT A GLANCE: It's been a very difficult season for the Canberra Raiders in Jersey Flegg, but the young Green Machine has now posted three wins in a row. They beat the Wests Tigers at the antiquated Lidcombe Oval in Round 20, 18-8.

The Tigers were the first to score, through Tony Sukkar in the 14th minute. But tries for Raiders centre Siamani Leuluai and second rower Josh Billing saw Canberra take a 12-4 lead to the half time break.

Points were even harder to come by in the second forty. The Raiders were unable to take advantage of the sin binning of Wests benchie, Cayne Nicholas two minutes into the half. It took until the 59th minute before Tigers winger Jay Kirk was able to cross. Again, Tigers half Michael Tannous was unable to convert. Trailing by four, they were right back in the game. But Raiders half Mitch Henderson put the result beyond doubt with three minutes left - producing a converted try.

The Canberra Raiders had a bye in Round 21 - and now host the Newcastle Knights in Round 22. The Raiders have lifted themselves from the bottom of the ladder. But the bottom four teams - the Sea Eagles, Tigers, Raiders and Knights all have six wins to their name. So the Raiders need to keep winning if they're to avoid that dreaded wooden spoon - and make a strong finish to the season. The Knights broke a five game losing streak on Sunday, beating the Rabbitohs 22-14 at Redfern Oval.

Team news: Shaun Packer comes in at starting hooker, with Toby Thorburn promoted to NSW Cup. Hooker Owen Patie takes over the No. 14 jersey. Mitch Prest returns from injury on the bench, with Jacob Piper dropping out. Noah Ryan has been added as 18th man. Jake Clydsdale may be a late change, as he's also been named for NSW Cup on the bench.

2023 season record: Raiders: 6 and 11, 1 draw (11th, -100)
Knights: 6 and 12 (12th, -48)

I have to say i was a little dissappinted with his showing. I thought the QLD middles kind of bashed them around a bit. Both Clydesdale and Fainu got dominated too much for my liking.
Not to say he's done just i think he's got a little bit of work to do. Glad we've got another good high pedigree middle though.
Backing up to play this game speaks to a strong motor and work ethic.

I had a different take on Clydesdale's game. Early on there were 3 in the tackle and the ball was deliberately taken from his possession. It was a clear penalty but not given. It could have made him go into his shell, but instead he knuckled down and got to work. Qld have an absolute giant in Ben Te Kura in their front row who is an aggressive runner, but Clydesdale didn't shirk the contact. He was bloodied but unbeaten at the end of the match. Clydesdale played well in SG Ball this year and I thought was our best player in the finals match where the Raiders bowed out.

37th min TRY KNIGHTS to winger Jahoiyakim Afoa, early error from Canberra. Afoa can’t convert his own try from the sideline.

45th min TRY RAIDERS to Josh Billing. They’re in again after a penalty for an illegal tackle from the Knights. Converted Mitch Henderson.

Raiders 18-14
