AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have won five in a row - and remarkably are two competition points shy of the fifth placed Storm. Remarkably, because they have spent much of the season anchored to the bottom of the ladder. They defeated the Wests Tigers 14-10 at Kippax on Saturday. The Raiders are now in eighth spot on the ladder - and whatever happens from here, they've produced a remarkable late season surge.

The Tigers dominated the territory and posession in the opening 20 minutes of Saturday's match - but good defence from the Raiders held the visitors out. The Raiders finally got their chance in the 20th minute. A short attacking kick from Keahn Skipps set up the try for second rower Jaxon Lavender. A good raid down the middle from Sione Vaihu and Bailey Hodges produced a four pointer for Vaihu in the 24th minute. But a try for Raiders bench hooker Owen Pattie in the 34th minute - off the back of a booming 40/20 kick - ensured the Green Machine went to the break with an 8-6 lead.

Raiders five eighth Noah Ryan was sin binned in the 47th minute, and Tigers winger Trey Peni was able to score while he was missing. The Tigers took a 10-8 lead, but it would not last long. Green Machine second rower Josh Billing scored in the 60th minute, taking the Ryan kick to the try line. The Mitch Henderson conversion produced the final score line.

The Raiders next travel to Shark Park for a clash with Cronulla. And that is a tough assignment. The Sharks are in fourth place. But they are coming off a loss to the Panthers (22-20) in their last outing. They have also suffered another recent loss to the Panthers (18-16) and one to the Dragons (34-18). The Sharks will be fresh, as they had a bye in Round 23.

Team news: Jacob Piper comes into the second row for Jaxon Lavender, who has been promoted to NSW Cup. Tate Rhea has been added to the bench. Noah Saddler, who made a comeback from injury last week with Tuggeranong in the Canberra Raiders Cup, has been named as 18th man.

Last round: The Cronulla Sharks ended the Canberra Raiders' five game winning streak on Friday - beating the Green Machine, 34-16, at Shark Park. With two rounds remaining in the regular season, the result means their finals chances are just about extinguished. They next face the second placed Bulldogs at Kippax, before a trip to Melbourne for a clash with the fifth placed Storm.

The Sharks were quick out of the blocks, scoring three tries in the first 15 minutes - to five eighth Tully Wilton, centre Benjamin Lavender and captain Manaia Waitere. Raiders second rower Josh Billing got one back in the 25th minute. It was a simple shift to the left, with five eighth Noah Ryan delivering the final pass. But the home team went to the break with a 22-6 lead, after winger Siteni Taukamo scored right before half time.



The Raiders kept in touch thanks to a try to bench hooker Owen Pattie five minutes into the second half - diving over from dummy half. But in this game, each time the Raiders scored, the Sharks had an answer. Cronulla winger Kristian Dixon ended with a second half hat trick. Hooker Toby Thorburn scored the Raiders' only other try of the match in the 53rd minute - off a crash ball play from close range. Mitch Henderson's conversion meant that Canberra trailed by 10 with 15 minutes left. Two converted tries was the task. But it was the Sharks that finished the stronger.

Next round: The Raiders have a very difficult assignment when they host the Bulldogs on Saturday. The Dogs have lost only five games all season and they have a finals spot already sewn up. They have recorded only one recent loss, to the Panthers (40-12) - but they also came close in the Round 22 draw with the first placed Roosters (22-22). The Dogs are coming off a 30-16 win over the Knights. Canterbury posted a decisive win against the Raiders in Round 12.

Team news: Keahn Skipps is out, with Peyton Jenkins replacing him at fullback. The Raiders are otherwise unchanged.
