2023 Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg

Post by greeneyed »

Looks like Noah Saddler has had some sort of knee reconstruction today (left knee), based on his Instagram Stories. Bad luck, he’s a good prospect. The Raiders seem to be having a huge number of serious knee injuries…

Looks like Ash Barnes will take over Jersey Flegg. Not sure if it had been announced before today, but he is listed in that spot on the Raiders website.

Seems Campbell Woolnough has moved to Newcastle. Played some Flegg for us this year and was very good for Belconnen Sharks.

Victoria Thunderbolts to become Melbourne Storm

Victoria’s elite male rugby league players will have the opportunity to play in Storm colours next season with the newly announced Melbourne Storm junior representative teams.

NRL Victoria and Melbourne Storm today formalised a partnership that will rebrand both the U19 SG Ball and U21 Jersey Flegg Thunderbolts teams in the NSW Rugby League competitions as Melbourne Storm. The Storm also plans to have a Harold Matthews team in the future.

2023 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg draw released

The NSWRL has released the draws for the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg competitions for 2023.

The Canberra Raiders have three triple headers and one double header at Canberra Stadium next season - with the Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup Raiders providing the warm up matches for their NRL counterparts. The Raiders will also play in a triple header at Wagga Wagga in Round 9, when they meet the Dolphins, a home game the club has tranferred to an away venue.

The Raiders had six triple headers at Canberra Stadium last year. The Raiders have signalled an intention to play NRLW matches alongside their NRL games in 2023 - but the NRLW draw for next year is still to be finalised. The times and venues of three home rounds in NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg are still to be determined - clashes with the Knights (Round 23), Tigers (Round 24) and Bulldogs (Round 25). Depending on the NRLW draw, it appears that some of these games could be played at Canberra Stadium. The venue for the Round 16 Jersey Flegg clash with the Dragons is also still to be determined.

The Roosters and Warriors will be added to the NSW Cup competition in 2023, with a total of 13 teams participating.

The Raiders will play the Bulldogs in "Magic Round" at Redfern Oval in Round 10.

The Raiders will play at Wentworth Park, which was the home ground of former team, Glebe, for the first time ever when the NSW Cup and Flegg teams meet the Roosters in Round 17. Unfortunately, the Roosters have chosen not to play those games at the new Sydney Football Stadium on the same day.

The Western Suburbs Magpies will also play their Round 14 NSW Cup match against the Raiders at Lidcombe on Saturday afternoon, rather than prior to the 8:00pm Friday night clash between Canberra and the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown.

Re: 2023 Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg

Post by greeneyed »

This is the first time the Raiders have listed a potential Jersey Flegg squad for 2023. What we know of the squad... happy for additions or corrections.

Josh Allen - Prop forward who arrived in Canberra in 2019, was playing with the Raiders in the Under 20s team in the CRRL Cup in 2020, has also turned out for Gungahlin Bulls in the past. The son of Broncos and Maroons player Gavin Allen. Six NSW Cup games for Canberra last year.

Trent Borthwick - Hooker, who was playing with Jersey Flegg with the Wests Tigers last year, SG Ball in 2021. Previously with Penrith, described this way in 2020:

A stocky hooker with bucket loads of speed and potential. This Emu Plains junior is expected to play a key role in Penrith’s SG Ball side this season. Borthwick is also a clever ball distributor from dummy half, highlighted by his vision for the Panthers and the youngster looks set for a big future.

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport ... e82008eacd

Artie Brown - Lock, prop West Belconnen Warriors. Described this way:

The 19 year-old ball-running backrower was a standout in the Warriors’ minor and major premiership campaign, and has been rewarded by being picked up by the Canberra Raiders for next season.

“He’s quite a big boy and he’s got a big motor – he just doesn’t stop,” says Warriors president Steve Kirby. “He’s a strong ball carrier, he hits good lines and is happy to get in there and do plenty of work in defence as well.”

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/ ... 712828b334

Ray Burns - Recruited to the Raiders from Mackay Cutters last year, fullback/outside back. Has been training with the top squad in the preseason. Five NSW Cup appearances in 2022 for Canberra.

Rayden Burns was recruited from the Mackay Cutters last year. The 21 year old is fairly small, standing at 174 cms and weighing in at 74 kgs. But he is nippy, very quick with opportunity. No doubt Raiders assistant coach Mick Crawley - who was the Cutters coach in 2021 - was behind that move. Burns played five NSW Cup games in 2022, scoring three tries and producing three line breaks, 12 tackle breaks and four try assists. Unfortunately, he was stretchered off with an injury in the Round 14 clash with the Panthers at Kippax, ruling him out for the rest of the season. Just when he was starting to make a real impact. He also played in seven Jersey Flegg games, scoring two tries.

JJ Clarkson - Middle forward Jayden Clarkson was one of the stars for the Queensland team that won the Australian Secondary Schools Championship in Canberra in 2019. He was subsequently picked for the Under 18s Australian Schoolboys. He started with the Raiders in SG Ball in 2020 - But before the competition could be completed, it was cancelled, due to the pandemic. That same year, Clarkson went on to play with the Raiders' Under 20s team that won the CRRL Cup. A serious leg injury kept him out of the 2021 SG Ball Grand Final winning team - and his 2022 season was also affected by injury.

Juwan Compain - Lock. Recruited to the Raiders last year. 12 NSW Cup appearances for Canberra in 2022. Graduate of Palm Beach Currumbin school, played Tweed Seagulls, came through Gold Coast Titans system. Played Queensland U18s in 2019.

Tyler Conroy - Five eighth, edge forward. Listed in the SG Ball squad last year, but did not play. Described this way in late 2021:

Tyler Conroy, The Cathedral College, Rockhampton. NRL club – Canberra Raiders (contracted 2022-23) - Strong and skillful, Tyler had a standout season with the Central Queensland Capras in the Mal Meninga Cup in 2021. An edge back rower, he can also slot into the backline and is adept at five-eighth. He has great footwork at the line and is very strong defensively. He’s a smart and instinctive footballer who plays the game with great vision. A Queensland junior representative, he impressed at a training camp with the Raiders earlier in the year, showing he had the skills to take him to the top.

https://www.couriermail.com.au/news/que ... 11c2516dfc

Taine Couper - Centre, Sunshine Coast Falcons, Queensland Cup Colts (U21s) competition 2022. Graduate of St Brendan's College, Yepoon.

Prinston Esera - Centre. The younger brother of Caleb Esera, recruited from famous rugby league Wavell High. Souths Logan Magpies Back of the Year 2021, Queensland junior emerging Origin squad, moved to Canberra in 2022, played SG Ball.

Jack Hartwig - Hooker. From Forbes Magpies, part of the Canterbury Bulldogs system, signing three year deal with the Belmore based club in 2018. Represented the Western Rams and Country at junior level. Played with Yass Magpies in 2022.

Livai Kaloutolu - Speedy, good stepping winger or fullback, Belconnen United Sharks, Canberra Raiders juniors. Fijian, played on the wing at the start of the 2021 SG Ball season, before losing his contract due to an off field incident. Earned a return last year.

Eneseli Kamuta - Prop, Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews and SG Ball.

Tane Kiriona - Lock or prop, arrived in Canberra last year to play SG Ball. One NSW Cup appearance in 2022. Picked in Queensland U19s squad last year, but did not play. Previously Central Queensland Capra, Mal Meninga Cup, St Brendan's College Yeppon, Aaron Payne Cup. Described as "big, mobile forward".

Josh Latham - Halfback. Played with Goulburn Bulldogs in 2022. Goulburn Stockmen junior. Described this way:

The halfback, who was still young enough to play under 18s this season, rose to the occasion with an outstanding debut season in first grade, winning rookie of the year at the Bulldogs and earning selection in the under 21 Canberra Region rep team.

“He did a phenomenal job of leading the boys round the park in his rookie year, especially in such a crucial position as a halfback,” says first grade coach Tyson Greenwood. “I think his organisational skills are his key attribute. He’s quick on his feet, but I really saw his defence shine this year, considering he was an 18-year-old kid playing first grade. I think that’s what highlighted his season: the way he didn’t back away from any challenges and how he didn’t look out of place defending as a first grade footballer.”

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/ ... 712828b334

Loghan Lewis - Played prop in the Canberra Raiders 2021 SG Ball Grand Final winning team. Originates from Gold Coast, Keebra Park.

Jack Piccirilli - Gerringong, Country Under 18s and Dapto fullback, recruited from Dragons system. Named in Raiders 2023 SG Ball squad.

Jacob Piper - Lock, outside back. Monaro Colts, Boorowa/Harden, part of the 2022 Canberra Raiders SG Ball squad. Played in the backs with Belconnen United Sharks in 2022.

Mitchell Prest - Backrower. Part of the 2021 SG Ball squad, played in the 2021 Grand Final winning team off the bench. Riverina Bulls, comes from Young, Young Cherrypickers junior, has come through Raiders junior ranks.

Tate Rhea - Second rower. Played some Jersey Flegg in 2022 for the Raiders, recruited by the club at the beginning of last year. A graduate of St Peter Claver College, Riverview, Ipswich, Queensland (2020). Also played with Belconnen United Sharks in 2022.

Kane Rushton - Fullback, Canberra Raiders junior, named in 2022 SG Ball squad.

Jack Sandford - Kiwi Jack Sandford was the fullback in the 2021 SG Ball Premiership winning team - but injury severely affected him in 2022. He played one NSW Cup game last year - scoring a try in the Round 3 clash with the Magpies - and one Flegg match. He's a solid player, and looks good in the open.

Kalani Skipps - Winger. Played Burleigh Bears, Queensland Cup Colts (Under 21s) in 2022.

Mitchel Souter - Souter, 21, is a Woden Valley Rams junior who has been in the Raiders' system for some time. He was the Under 20s starting hooker for much of the 2020 season when the Raiders won the one off CRRL Cup - while Adrian Trevilyan was injured. He played in 10 NSW Cup games last year, including the last five matches at starting hooker. He produced two tries, two try assists, three line break assists and an average of 29 running metres. He posted an average 22 tackles per game and an 89 per cent tackle efficiency.

Ethan Strange - A Central Coast junior, who has been in the Roosters' system - playing for them at five eighth in last year's SG Ball Grand Final. Strange was recruited to the Green Machine last year to the end of 2025. He's on a development deal this year. But he's slated to move into the top 30 in 2024. That's how highly the club rates him. He's been spending this preseason with the top squad.

Toby Thorburn - Thorburn, who hails from the Mackay Magpies, was very impressive in the Raiders' SG Ball team that won the 2021 Grand Final. His appearances were restricted in 2022, with two games in NSW Cup and one in Jersey Flegg early in the season. But his potential is very strong. Steve Jackson, the man who scored the famous, decisive try for the Raiders in the 1989 Grand Final, now lives in Mackay and is a Magpies man. He had this to say about Thorburn when he was recruited by Canberra for 2021: "His love for the game, his work ethic, it's second to none. When you talk, he's hanging on the words you say, waiting for the magic word he can hold onto for the rest of his life. He's a footballer. You can tell that nothing will stand in the road of him and the game."

Eddie Tiana - Winger, Griffith Black and Whites, named in Canberra Raiders 2023 SG Ball squad.

Josh Townsend - Queanbeyan Whites rugby union, named best forward at the club in 2022. Played second rower in union.

Ryan Woolley - Centre. A new recruit from Western Australia, made his debut for the Raiders on the wing in Round 1 of the 2023 SG Ball Cup, scoring a try. From North Beach Sea Eagles, Perth.

Jaxon Yow - Halfback, Runaway Bay, Keebra Park High on the Gold Coast, new recruit this year, also named in the Canberra Raiders 2023 SG Ball squad.

Asomua and Morkos in Flegg is a surprise. I don’t think either played there last year.

Agree with this, would have thought both would get better development in NSW cup at this stage, probably should be looking to clear out a bit of dead wood in our outside backs to give these guys more opportunities, it's harsh but there's more chance guys like Morkos and Asomua can contribute at nrl level in 1-2 years than Valemi and Croker

11th min TRY ROOSTERS to winger Isaac Guba. That came out of nothing. A miss kick, a bomb allowed to bounce… and it’s perfect for the Roosters. Converted Hugo Savala.

15th min TRY ROOSTERS to Hugo Savala running wide. The Raiders were short on their right side, they knew it too but didn’t adjust in time. Savala converts his own try.

27th min TRY ROOSTERS to Isaac Guba, his second, in the corner. Late offload on the last was impossible to stop for the 12 man Raiders outfit. No conversion.

Roosters 16-10
