Joseph Roddy was probably the man of the match for the Raiders. The halves going well, still some mistakes in them at this level. The team has benefited from the injection of SG Ball players, but too many errors in critical spots on the field. And the right edge defence caught short a few times. Improved performance all round though, right in it until the final couple of minutes.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have slipped to last place on the competition ladder, after being defeated by the St George Illawarra Dragons, 30-20, at Kippax on Saturday afternoon.

The Dragons scored early through winger Savelio Tamale, but Canberra struck back quickly. A good run from Keahn Skipps set up the play for a try to second rower Joseph Roddy in the 13th minute. Toby Thorburn got the try assist through a dummy half pass. The Raiders went to a 10-6 lead at the 20 minute mark, after a nice cut out pass from Skipps put winger Siamani Leuluai over in the corner.

The Dragons then scored three tries in the space of 10 minutes. Tamale completed his double in the 25th minute, before a stunning try to fullback Benjamin Rumble on the next set. A break down the touch line from centre Campbell Watchirs and a kick inside was regathered by five eighth Lyhkan King-Togia - who quickly offloaded to Rumble for a try under the posts. A four pointer for Watchirs out wide saw the visitors take a 20-10 lead to the break.



The Raiders fought back in the second half. Raiders centre Peyton Jenkins came up with a try in the 39th minute, after a Skipps bomb to the corner and fine leap for the ball. Unfortunately, Canberra soon handed the Dragons more opportunity, failing to find touch from a penalty. The next set finished with a red zone kick which Raiders winger Livai Kaloutolu could not defuse. That produced an easy try for Dragons half Nicholas Quinn under the posts.

Canberra got right back into the game in the 57th minute, when second rower Jaxon Lavender scored, chasing a Jalen Afamasaga kick ahead. The Raiders trailed 26-20 - and they played with renewed energy in the final 10 minutes. But they couldn't convert their opportunities. A late turnover saw Dragons winger Cooper Roberts score in the corner with two minutes remaining.

It doesn't get any easier for the Raiders in Round 17, when they travel to Wentworth Park in Sydney for a clash with the first placed Roosters. The Roosters are coming off a 40-16 win on Sunday at Coogee Oval against the Rabbitohs. Winger Tavita Henare-Schuster and second rower Max McCathie both bagged doubles.

The Roosters have lost only three matches this year. Two of the three have come against the Panthers, including their only recent loss - a 24-22 defeat in Round 15. Apart from the win over the Rabbitohs, they have recent wins over the Bulldogs (14-4), Sharks (35-14) and Dragons (34-12).

The Roosters had a big, 48-16, win over the Raiders when the teams met at Kippax earlier this year. Canberra has won just once in the past six matches between the two clubs - the Grand Final qualifier in 2019.

Team news: Keahn Skipps has been shifted to fullback, replacing Jack Sandford, while Jalen Afamasaga takes over at five eighth. The Raiders have not named a player at halfback, but it is likely that new signing from the Knights, Mitch Henderson, will wear the No. 7. Regan Carr moves to the wing, while Jaxon Lavender and Prinston Esera form a new look centre partnership. Winger Siamani Leuluai and centre Peyton Jenkins drop out.

Jake Clydsdale replaces Mitchell Prest at starting prop, while new recruit from the Panthers, Delahia Wigmore replaces Lavender in the second row. Tane Kiriona and Tahrell Feaveai.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders lost 24-14 to the Sydney Roosters at Wentworth Park on Sunday afternoon - sadly, their third in a row. Raiders winger Kane Rushton was the first to score, after a good sweeping move to the right edge in the sixth minute. However, tries to Roosters hooker Braith Alexander and half Cassius Tia saw the home team take a 12-4 lead to the half time break.



Five minutes into the second half, a good run and offload from new Raiders recruit Delahia Wigmore, put Keahn Skipps on his way, with Toby Thorburn backing up for a four pointer near the posts. It was smart footy. Then in the 45th minute, it looked like Kane Rushton had been held... but he kept his feet and somehow struggled his way to the try line. The Raiders led 14-12 and hopes were high that they might get an elusive fourth win - but unfortunately, the Roosters put on three tries inside the final 15 minutes of the match.

The Raiders are anchored to the bottom of the ladder - and now must face the third placed Penrith Panthers at Canberra Stadium on Saturday. It is the first game in a triple header in the nation's capital. The Panthers are coming off a narrow, 20-18 win over the Knights at Penrith. Penrith led 20-6 at half time - and that lead was just enough in the end. The Panthers have suffered recent losses to the Bulldogs (26-0) and lowly ranked Tigers (28-20).

Team news: Shaun Packer comes into the starting team for dummy half Toby Thorburn, with SG Ball hooker Owen Pattie added to the bench. Jayden Clarkson returns to the squad at lock, meaning Tane Kiriona drops to the interchange list. Tate Rhea is 18th man.
