Canberra Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead says England ready to walk the walk despite outside talk

England players and officials believe the host nation hasn’t been getting the respect they deserve ahead of this weekend’s World Cup opening game against Toa Samoa at St James' Park. With Whitehead’s Raiders team-mate Josh Papalii among a host of Origin stars to commit to Samoa, there is a lot of hype in England about the possibility of the Pacific nation causing an opening game boilover.

“There is a lot of talk about other nations, but people can talk as much as they like,” Whitehead said. “As a group we know what we are capable of doing and we are going to show that so they can think whatever they want to be honest.

An absolute nightmare for following the action on the field. Ridiculous, and all because they’re too timid to make the call on halfback.

Canberra Raiders captain Elliott Whitehead says World Cup success would mean more than any NRL honour

Canberra Raiders captain Elliott Whitehead says World Cup glory with England would top anything he could achieve in the NRL and has backed his side to silence the doubters.

“My proudest moment wasn’t playing in an NRL Grand Final,” Whitehead said. “Playing in the 2017 World Cup final meant a lot more to me. It doesn’t get any better than that. This is the pinnacle of a rugby career, so I just hope I get selected.”

We have squads announced just a day or so before the first game…. we have teams announced in alphabetic order… some in number order… three not in order of position. What a shemozzle and an embarrassment for our premier event.

New Zealand pick Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad ahead Canberra Raiders teammate Sebastian Kris

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad has beaten Canberra teammate Sebastian Kris to a starting centre spot for New Zealand's opening Rugby League World Cup game against Lebanon.

New Zealand coach Michael Maguire has shown little inclination to take things lightly, naming a near full-strength team for their opening fixture.

After Tomoko was not selected in the squad and this selection of CNK over Kris in the centres, I am sure Madge would fit in just fine on the Raiders coaching staff.

They've at least selected CNK in his best position. But i'd have both Kris and Timoko over him given their runs on the board this year
That said i think CNK will do a good job for them.

Hughes out, Marshall-King to debut for Kiwis

New Zealand halfback Jahrome Hughes has been ruled out of the Kiwis' opening World Cup match against Lebanon due to a thigh strain.

Hughes has been replaced by Dolphins-bound hooker Jeremy Marshall-King, who will make his Test debut from the interchange bench. Veteran Sea Eagles playmaker Kieran Foran, who is joining the Titans in 2023, will partner with Eels five-eighth Dylan Brown in the halves.

The teams have been warming up on the field and are now just heading back to the sheds. The crowd is well below capacity at St James' Park, Newcastle, though the lower stands are fairly full. The opening ceremonies underway! About 20 minutes to kick off.

The field covered in the three colours of the three World Cup tournaments. The flags of the nations competing in the Women's World Cup come out first... now the Wheelchair World Cup representatives. Finally the flags of the nations participating in the Men's World Cup enter the field. Andy Gregory carries the England flag.

The World Cup is now brought onto the field by Jason Robinson and Kevin Sinfield. Also the trophies for the Women's and Wheel Chair Cups.

There seems to be some sort of delay... everyone just waiting... the audio system is not working it appears. Now they finally head out onto the field. Not sure if something else was supposed to happen... but now they all leave again. What a debacle.

The Kaiser Chiefs were supposed to sing again... but they are unable to... and now they all leave the field. What a disastrous start. The players are supposed to be on the field now.

Think Billy Idol, 42nd Street, the Big TV debacles. This debacle is right up there with them. Not good enough for a World Cup.

The crowd is now waving flags... which create the England and Samoa flags in the stands... so that bit worked...

The teams enter the field. And now the national anthems are proceeding. Josh Papalii stands alongside former Raiders Anthony Milford and Junior Paulo. Now the Sipi Tau from Samoa, led by Paulo.

The Samoan team has delivered an incredible moment there. It has not saved the debacle of the non opening ceremony... but they had a good shot at it.

Nice to see Levi showing a bit of leadership there and looking like he’s trying to switch in the team after that.

England kick off, we are underway! Ten minutes late. The crowd is incredibly silent.

5th min TRY ENGLAND... no... the referee says no try and is going to the video referee. An England chaser taken out by Milford, but then the ball was not grounded by English centre Herbie Farnworth in the in goal. NO TRY, penalty to England. Good kick George Williams.

PENALTY GOAL ENGLAND to Tommy Makinson.

England 2-0

We could have used some more of those G.Willy kicks when he was in green, wasn’t in Ricky’s plans.
