Michael Maguire joins Canberra Raiders coaching staff

Post by Nadruku »

Any news on who our assistant coaches could be next year? Anyone have any names? Or who would you like to see?

Not sure if Michael Maguire would be the right fit, but he has a lot of experience. I would not go with two relative rookies. At least one should have some experience. Both the Sharks and Cowboys were good defensively over the course of the season so perhaps look there for an Assistant Coach. Steve Price is an assistant at the Sharks. May be worth a phone call. Same with Steve Georgallis at the Cowboys.

Michael Maguire would be a poor choice, given what is obvious from a documentary series… and results.

anthony seibold would be a good option for defensive coach. knows the club, gives him a way back to the NRL and by all reports he is a very good defensive coach.

We have had meetings with Michael Monaghan. Not sure where that's up to.

He met with Titans as well.
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

We should go for someone who has no Raiders background. Fresh perspectives.

I think Seibold is far out of our league for an assistant coach. He is assistant coach to Eddie Jones for the England Rugby team. I am sure the RFU are paying him very well and will have him locked up until after the World Cup.

I think the question re Maguire is whether he could go back to being an assistant coach. He has a reputation for being such a hard taskmaster, I am not sure you could do that as an assistant.

I think his reputation has been harmed by the Tigers experience but they are such a basket case that no one can save them.

I think its important to not dismiss candidates because they didnt have good HC results
The role of HC involves a lot more than an assistant, some damn fine assistants coaches are just not built to handle the top job but it doesnt mean they cant be good contributors in their role as assistants

Ideally what id like from the two openings is
1. an experienced coach who has a strong background and track record on one side of the footy. We've got Mick C on board so ideally it would be a defensive specialist. But it's got to be someone who is established enough for Stuart to respect and consider his input.

2. a younger, fresher face who understands the game today and what wins. Maybe a recently retired player who can be moulded into a potential successor. But someone who can provide the coaching staff a different perspective.

3. Have absolutely **** nothing to do with canberra or QBN. I want true fresh voices here.

I dont know who fits that bill, but some names that might be interesting... Kristian Woolf or Mick Potter. Woolf would likely be a short term option since he's in the running for HC gigs. Potter seems rusted on at this point as just a good assistant. It's not for me, because i dont think the man should be allowed to coach in the league again but Shane Flanagan is also in that conversation if you dont care about his history. I dont mind the idea of Maguire myself but get that the Tiger-Town doco and the Tigers tenure in general is a tough thing to overcome.

Re the younger voice... a Josh Hannay, John Morris type. I think John Morris could be good. Someone like that BUT NOT YOU SAM WILLIAMS.

All that being said, i welcome Sam Williams and Simon Woolford to our coaching staff

Hasn’t Woolf signed at Redcliffe as successor to Bennett?

But I agree, need to look at coaches from successful systems at other clubs.

Just to make us all feel old Michael Monaghan is 20 years removed from the club, so I don't think his past should exclude him

I wondered if Terry matterson would come come back to the club. Had a stint under Elliot and from all reports he left on good terms. Has been a head coach in the UK and has recently been let go from the broncos. I think we could do worse

Last I read Michael Monaghan was on the verge of joining the Bulldogs as an assistant.

He must be well regarded as it seems a number of clubs are interested in him.

I think background wise he'd be perfect i.e. someone from Canberra originally but that has operated outside of the Raiders for the last 20 years.

I’m with GE and Bot. Someone from well outside the tent with some fresh perspectives.

But obviously a quality candidate who will fit in with team and coaching staff culture.

I concur with the sentiment that your assistant coaching mix should have someone who is not long retired so that they are in touch with the modern game.

Someone like Ennis was widely regarded as fantastic for our organisation in 2019 as he had won at the highest levels, was recently retired and had zero affiliation with the QBN mafia.

That fresh perspective feels quite important.

All that said, I too am fully expecting Woolford and Williams to be measuring up drapes at Raiders HQ in a few weeks time.

Left field option, but what about James Graham? Would offer different perspectives and articulate for a front row forward. Played for Wayne in English side and Des Hasler's GF teams of 2012 and 2014. Recent player, but drawback is no Assistant Coaching experience. Let go by Dragons as a pathways coach and corporate/marketing executive. May also be a connection to potential recruitment of English players in future when Whitehead fades into the sun.

McFadden will be a huge loss which is why a rookie would be big mistake imo. The wrong choice and I could see this team in the bottom 4 easily.

If you’re an assistant coach, it’s probably fair to assume you want a head coach role one day. I imagine as an assistant you grow towards a head coach role by either (1) working under an excellent head coach that you learn from daily, or (2) being given the trust, scope and responsibility to perform the assistant role in your own developing style.

Is Ricky a head coach that assistant coaches want to work under? Have any of Ricky’s previous assistants gone on to Head Coach roles?
