Re: 2022 Rd 23 V Knights: Teams and Previews
Hopefully we get Tapine back in for Guler.
I'd also start Mooney at lock and put Elliott on the bench instead of Starling. He can play dummy half for 10-15 mins if needed.
Ideally, CHN starting for Whitehead too.

Same team that ... *checks notes* ... beat the Dragons!
Except add Tapine. And Cotric. And drop Whitehead.

We have a bit of depth now in the backs - Hoppa, Schiller and Cotric fighting it out for one wing spot.
Kris, Timoko and HSS (next year) in the centres. Some observers think Morkos is good as well.
Savage looking more and more comfortable at FB.
We should never have played Semi Valemi for 8 weeks at centre or CNK at fullback to begin with. Who knows how our season would have panned out if Savage started at FB.

No coach in the NRL is starting their season with 20 year old rookie Savage at fullback. By his own admission he was learning how to organize a defense this year as a complete novice.
It's a hindsight pipe dream.

You didn’t mention our highest paid centre? Also with not a lot between 3 wingers there is a good opportunity to free up the $$ we are paying Cotric. Not getting value for money with him and as you say there are others just as good or not too far off.Hong Kong Raider wrote: ↑August 14, 2022, 11:02 pm We have a bit of depth now in the backs - Hoppa, Schiller and Cotric fighting it out for one wing spot.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Re: 2022 Rd 23 V Knights: Teams and Previews
Hoppa is a decent backup winger.
I don't think adding slower and slower wingers to our back 5 is a good long term solution.
For all the "could end up in the backrow" talk we've had for different players I can't remember one that Ricky actually has turned into a backrower. Not saying it's a bad idea, just that Ricky doesn't seem to do it. I wonder if the cardio requirements are so far different now to a winger/centre that they just can't do it?

Wonder if he's capable of the same turn around as Kris. 2022 pre-season Kris was focused on sprinting and we've all seen the results. He was the quickest top speed I saw reported by a Raider on the telstra tracker GPS for a couple of years coming into this season.
Hoppa might find a step or two as he comes back from his double knee reco's but Kris didn't suddenly get quick, he was our quickest back or close to it prior.

I think it is quite important for the balance of our backline that we have players with satisfactory or better speed in there. That is why Kris and Savage are important to us atm.BadnMean wrote: ↑August 15, 2022, 11:30 amKris was always quick though, despite posters on here's impressions of him.zim wrote: ↑August 15, 2022, 10:58 amWonder if he's capable of the same turn around as Kris. 2022 pre-season Kris was focused on sprinting and we've all seen the results. Whilst the likes of Cotric, Raps, HSS and Hoppa May bring other good attributes, I don’t think you would accuse any of them of being speedsters.

I wasn't saying Kris was a magician. In 2021 he was over sized, slower to turn, and looking like he might move into the second row at some point. He worked really hard over the off season to get his pace and agility back up.BadnMean wrote: ↑August 15, 2022, 11:30 amKris was always quick though, despite posters on here's impressions of him.zim wrote: ↑August 15, 2022, 10:58 amWonder if he's capable of the same turn around as Kris. 2022 pre-season Kris was focused on sprinting and we've all seen the results. Cotric is being paid $600k a season and at best offers marginally more than Schiller or Hoppa.
Set aside what he did in his rookie year and objectively look at what he comparatively turning out this year and what we are paying him.
If you still think you’re right about this, take a deep breath and reconsider your arguments about how good he is while you watch other teams play finals this year.

If you still think you’re right about this, take a deep breath and reconsider your arguments about how good he is while you watch other teams play finals this year.
1. Cotric is not playing up to a 600k price tag
2. Cotric is not currently producing the form he showed in 2017-2019
3. Cotric is still a superior winger to Hoppa.
I think if Cotric really focuses himself on running straight and hard and getting his work rate up on kick returns as opposed to crabbing sideways on every run, I think he can still be a quality contributor.

We're also not paying Cotric 600k, we are paying him significantly less than that.

It looks like most teams are kicking away from Cotric's side of the field after a few cracking games a month or so back. Our outside backs would be so much more effective if we had a better structure and a set play other than Wighton throwing a wrap around pass to Hudson Young.

Yep. Guessing we’re paying $400-450k of that.Botman wrote:We're also not paying Cotric 600k, we are paying him significantly less than that.
Which may or may not be about $50k too much.
Cotric certainly needs to work on his game this offseason and develop some secondary skills.

Sorry to say, but he’s in decline from here onwards. He won’t get quicker or more agile but he will slow up. He’s not uncovering new angles or skill sets that have been hiding below the surface untapped.BJ wrote: ↑August 15, 2022, 1:35 pmYep. He will have some good games, the odd great game mixed with a lot of sub-par games. It’s not where we want $400-600k a year tied up.
Seems a great bloke and a Canberra junior and really burst onto the scene in his breakout season. I’m going to be really radical and suggest we try something different and consider reality over sentiment and see if that drives a better outcome for us.
