The Canberra Raiders face the challenge of winning their final four matches if they're to play finals football in 2022. It starts on Sunday with a clash with the Dragons at Canberra Stadium. And if they are to win the game, they must do it without coach Ricky Stuart. He has been banned for seven days and fined $25,000 by the NRL for press conference comments about Penrith player Jaeman Salmon.

Last round: 2022 Round 21. Penrith Panthers 26 - Canberra Raiders 6. It was an extremely disappointing night for the Canberra Raiders in more ways than one. The Green Machine opened the game strongly, with Josh Papalii scoring under the posts inside the first 10 minutes. But a crucial error and poor defence in the middle of the field saw the Panthers strike back almost immediately. And the Raiders went on to produce a poor performance for the next 70 minutes.

More on Round 21: As I saw it

Team news: The Raiders will have to prepare for this game without head coach Ricky Stuart. The NRL has fined him $25,000 and banned him from having any contact with the team for seven days, from Tuesday afternoon - a punishment for his press conference comments about Penrith's Jaeman Salmon after Saturday's clash with the Panthers.

The Raiders will also be missing prop Joe Tapine. He left the field early with a rib injury against the Panthers. It is a huge blow, as he's been the Green Machine's best player of 2022 by some margin. He's replaced in the starting team by Emre Guler. Corey Horsburgh comes in on the bench, after made a successful return from pneumonia in NSW Cup last Saturday. Bench prop Ryan Sutton has been named, but he will have to pass concussion protocols this week. He played less than a minute against the Panthers, following a head high tackle from Penrith's James Fisher Harris.

Nick Cotric has been sidelined for this match, after pleading guilty to a careless high charge tackle. Xavier Savage (ankle) returns at fullback, with Jordan Rapana moving back to the wing. Albert Hopoate retains his place on the other wing. Outside back James Schiller (COVID) will return to the field this week. He's been named on the reserves list.

Dragons forward Tariq Sims has been suspended for four weeks, after being charged with a careless high tackle on Sharks winger Connor Tracey on Saturday night. It is such a lengthy suspension because it is his third judiciary charge this year. Francis Molo (ribs) has also been ruled out. Josh McGuire and Michael Molo move into the starting team in the back row, while Tyrell Fuimaono and Billy Burns have been added to the bench.

Late changes: On Saturday afternoon, the Raiders retained James Schiller and Matt Frawley on the extended bench in their reduced squad of 19. Tyrell Sloan dropped out of the Dragons' squad, with Jaiyden Hunt coming in on the bench. Jayden Sullivan and Cody Ramsey remain on the extended bench.

History: The Raiders have won 21 of 35 games against St George Illawarra, and drawn one. Between 2003 and 2013, the Raiders were the Dragons' "hoodoo" team, with Canberra losing just one of the 16 matches played. The Dragons broke the hoodoo with four wins in a row between 2014 and 2016. But the Raiders have since won five of the past eight matches.

In Round 15 last year at Wollongong, the Raiders led the Dragons 20-8, early in the second half. They then produced a horrible second half fade, ultimately losing, 22-20. In Round 21 on the Gold Coast, the two teams were tied at 12 apiece at half time. Raiders hooker Tom Starling scored the only try of the second half, inside the first five minutes. A Jarrod Croker penalty goal sealed the 20-12 victory for Canberra, with 10 minutes remaining.

In Round 16 this year, the Raiders suffered a two point loss to the Dragons in Wollongong. The match was played in diabolical weather, and the Dragons made the better of the conditions. The match ended in controversial circumstances, with the NRL later admitting that the Raiders should have received a penalty in final moments in front of the posts - for any one of three infringements from Ben Hunt. It cost the Raiders the chance to send the game into golden point.

2022 Round 16: Canberra Raiders V St George Illawarra Dragons

2021 Round 21: Canberra Raiders V St George Illawarra Dragons

2021 Round 15: Canberra Raiders V St George Illawarra Dragons

The Raiders have won 13 of 17 games against the Dragons at Canberra Stadium, including the past two matches.

Form: Raiders: LWWWL
Dragons: LLWLL

The Dragons are coming off a 24-18 loss to the Sharks on Saturday night at Cronulla - effectively ruling them out of finals contention. They've had one recent win - against a Sea Eagles team weakened by seven players refusing to wear a jersey promoting inclusivity. They've also suffered recent losses to the Cowboys (34-8), Roosters (54-26) and Broncos (32-18).

Betting: The Raiders are $1.50 favourites, with the Dragons paying $2.60. The Dragons have 5.5 points start in the line betting.

Stat attack: This is a clash between ninth (Raiders) and 11th (Dragons) on the ladder. There is not a lot of difference between the two teams in terms of their attacking record in 2022. The Raiders have scored 63 tries, the Dragons 60. However, Canberra clearly has the better defensive record of the two teams. No team has missed more tackles than the Dragons this year. They also rank fifth for ineffective tackles (Raiders 15th).

The Raiders' completion rates and error counts were so poor earlier in the year, the Raiders shifted back towards a more conservative attacking style. They are now top four for one pass hit ups (Dragons last) and last for general play passes (Dragons second). Both teams don't mind a dummy half run. The Raiders rank fourth in that department, the Dragons eighth. The Raiders have not put away the offload, taking advantage of a key strength of their forwards.

Those numbers tell you a fair bit about the different attacking styles of the two teams. The Dragons can be more expansive, and that has troubled the Raiders' defence in the past.

Ben Hunt is the Dragons player the Raiders must contain. He sure is having a season. He ranks fifth in the NRL for try assists and third for kick metres. But he's also missed more tackles than any player. Dragons centre Zac Lomax has made the most errors in the league, so he needs to be kept under pressure.

2022 Season record: Raiders 10 and 10 (9th, -33)
Dragons 9 and 11 (11th, -130)

Attack: Raiders 18 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked 10th on tries scored
Dragons 18 points and 3 tries scored per match, equal 11th on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 20 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked equal fifth for fewest tries conceded
Dragons 24 points and 4 tries conceded per match, ranked 12th for fewest tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 50 per cent, Dragons 49 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 75 per cent, Dragons 76 per cent

Running: Raiders 1454 running metres per match
Dragons 1428 running metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 31, Dragons 28 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 4, Dragons 4 per match

Try assists: Raiders 2, Dragons 2 per match

Offloads: Raiders 12, Dragons 7 per match

Kicking: Raiders 505 kicking metres per match
Dragons 521 kicking metres per match

Tackling: Raiders 88 per cent tackle efficiency
Dragons 85 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1347 running metres conceded per match
Dragons 1453 running metres conceded per match

Errors: Raiders 11, Dragons 10 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 6, Dragons 5 per match

Key match-ups:

Matthew Timoko and Zac Lomax: Matt Timoko has become a regular fixture in the centres for the Raiders this year. He's played in all 20 matches so far, scoring seven tries and producing seven line breaks, three try assists and 55 tackle breaks. He's averaged 106 running metres and posted a tackle efficiency rate of 87 per cent. Zac Lomax has also played 20 games in 2022, scoring five tries and 56 goals. He's also produced four try assists, six line breaks, 112 average running metres and an 88 per cent tackle efficiency rate. As mentioned no player is more error prone in the competition than Lomax. He's made 35 this year, compared with 12 for Timoko. I'd like to see Timoko get more ball. Lomax gets the ball 18 times per game on average, Timoko 12. I'll call this match-up a draw, but if the Raiders used Timoko more, he'd probably have the better numbers.

Jamal Fogarty and Ben Hunt: Jamal Fogarty has now made nine appearances for the Raiders. No Raider had their best game last week, but Fogarty has been developing a good combination with Jack Wighton. His kicking is a strength. So far he's produced 11 forced drop outs, 275 average kicking metres and 27 goals. But he's also posted six try assists, and one line break assist. Ben Hunt has had one of the best seasons of his career in 2022. In 19 games, he's scored six tries and posted 15 try assists and 11 line break assists. He's also got 11 forced line drop outs and 422 average kicking metres. His defence is an issue. He has a 72 per cent tackle efficiency rate, compared with Fogarty's 90 per cent. And when you look at the per game numbers for the two players overall, there's not too much difference. But Hunt wins this match-up.

Hudson Young and Josh McGuire. Hudson Young has been in the form of his career in 2022. He's has better games than last week, but overall, he's produced seven tries, seven line breaks, four line break assists, 23 offloads and 103 running metres this year. Josh McGuire has been picked in the second row this week, after playing the last three games off the bench. In 10 appearances this year, he is yet to cross the try line. He's made 12 tackle breaks, two offloads and run an average of 85 metres with the ball in hand. Little doubt about this match-up for mine. Hudson Young wins in the green corner.

My tip: The Raiders are favourites in this match. Most of the numbers indicate that the Raiders should be too strong. But that's what we thought in the lead up to the last contest between the clubs as well - and the Dragons ended up taking the match. Far too often, the Raiders seem to lose matches that they are expected to win. So heads will really need to be switched on. It'll be tough without head coach Ricky Stuart and Joe Tapine. I'll tip the Raiders by six, but I can't say I'm doing that with a great deal of confidence.

What they're saying:

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart on the loss to the Panthers: "I'm not walking away from that downhearted because there was so much effort the boys put in. We let ourselves down. The tries they scored, they're tries we stop every week. Just one on one tackles, not making their shot. That doesn't scare me, because we're better than that defensively. It won't stem what we've got going. We're in survival mode and that's how we're going to play. I'm not going to let that result tonight stem the way we've been preparing and getting around each other. So we'll bounce off that and go again."

Bit of a reshuffle for the Dragons. Sloan dropped, Ramsey to fullback, Mbye to centre, Bird to lock. Smokescreened!

That Ramsay kid likes playing us. Didn’t he nearly score a hat trick on debut against us? One of them got called back on a forward pass that wasn’t.

Teams are back in the sheds after the warm up. Strange conditions, light to medium rain and sweeping, cold winds at times, sunny at times. Now here come the Dragons. They’re playing the original club song… now the Viking Clap. Both teams are out there… and a minute’s silence for Paul Green.
