SURVIVOR POLL IV: Top ten greatest ever Raiders

Post by greeneyed »

SURVIVOR POLL IV: Top ten greatest ever Raiders

Back in 2007, the members of The Greenhouse voted on their top ten greatest ever Canberra Raiders. It was a survivor-style poll... and this was the top ten back then:

Image

Now, after 40 seasons of The Green Machine, we're going to vote again... and we'll see how the list might change. Will players from the modern era of the club be able to force their way in? The starting point will be the top 30 players selected in our poll for the 40 Year Dream Team.

In the first two polls we voted off 15 players. In the third poll, time on the island was up for Jordan Rapana, Jack Wighton and David Furner. In this poll, a further twist. We will vote two players off the island in poll four.

The records of all the players with the club can be found here.

You have TWO votes in this poll. You may change your vote, but we'll declare the poll after this time next week. Remember, you are voting players OFF the island.

This is insanely difficult. I’ve gone with Mullins and Papalii. But I might yet change Papalii to Lazarus or Croker.

John Ferguson definitely in my top 10. Best ever winger. No doubt.

Yeah, I can't knock anyone at this point. All deserving, just down to personal preference really. Chicka was/is a legend.

I voted for Mullins. He just had a briefer peak than most others on the list (what a peak though!).

Couldn't bring myself to vote a second option, so left it.

Then noticed Chicka was polling neck and neck with Jason Croker. Much as Toots snr is one of my all time fave Raiders, seeing that crystalised my thoughts a bit more. Much as a like Croker, I'd just like Chicka in my all time greatest a little more. So had to go back and add a vote... sadly.

Mullins and Lazarus
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Yep. This isn't top 10 greatest Broncos who also played for the Raiders.

Lazo played 1 more season for the Broncs than he played for the Raiders. Qbyan local.

The hit job on Lazo in these threads is something else. He's a Raider for mine.

Fair enough. I had initially picked Mullins and reluctantly selected Chicka as the second pick because I saw that Croker was running second and can't leave him out of my top 10.

Good thing you can vote however you like then isn't it!
It's not a "hit job" to point out that he spent the vast majority of his career playing for other clubs. It's just a fact.
And how people view him in the context of this exercise being the greatest Raiders of all time, is entirely their own prerogative.

There are no easy cuts and haven't been for some time. People have got to split hairs some way.

FWIW, i also went for Mullins and Lazo this round.

Yep, everyone's vote counts the same. My personal opinion is that a guy like Croker who's played more games for the Raiders than anybody else in club history ranks ahead of someone like Lazarus who played 2/3 of his career at other clubs. Others can have a different view which is entirely their prerogative.

Lazo and Chicka for mine. Tough calls all round. The reason I leave Mullins in is growing up in the mid90s in NZ you could see what a phenomenon he was there for a couple of years. It's not an overstatement to say kids spent as much time calling themselves Mullins in the playground as they did Warne -which is pretty much the highest compliment you can pay an Australian athlete in NZ.

The 94 team is still so closely linked to Mullins purple patch.

I went Papalii partly reflecting a doubt that I’ve got some recency bias… and his career is not over, so can’t be fully assessed against the others. I’m a bit torn, as I felt confident enough to select current players in the 40 Year Dream Team.

The thing with Papa is that he's been in our best 3 players at year end for a decade. There may have been some lean years but that's an amazing run.

And if it was just consistency that he offered, that'd still be a fine achievement. But he's a gamebreaker too. Tremendous player.

Papalii is comfortably one of the clubs greatest 10 players imo
I didn’t even consider him myself.

But again, we’re splitting hairs here. I can understand the temptation to send him packing and see if his legacy lasts the test of time

The hard part about this is there isn’t a player you can name that someone won’t mount a very spirited and compelling case for

I went Mullins and reluctantly Croker. Mullins broke open defenses with his pace but unfortunately faded. Croker is a favorite of mine and I remember him playing busted so many times and in different positions. This was the toughest one to leave out for me. I'm glad it is a Top 10. Imagine the angst if it was a Top 5.

No need to imagine it, Red
As I understand it we’re bringing this thing right down to #1

We are going one by one after this to determine the top 10 in order. Voting strategically, and re-voting strategically is going to come into it. I’m considering a re-vote to save another player, now it looks like my Papalii vote is pointless.

The poll will last at least seven days, so voters have time to change up until next week.

I think that's the thing i like least about this... the idea of changing your votes and piling them into someone else because you dont like the results.
I dont think you should be able to change your votes. Just vote the people you think should go and the chips fall where they may based on the views of the people. Rather than potentially 1-2 people who decide they dont like what is about to happen so change their vote to usurp the majority

Exactly my thoughts.

But let's not forget Chicka also played at Newtown and East's.

That’s why I voted Chicka and Lazarus. Lazarus is a Broncos player in my world. I missed his Raiders run growing up

Exactly. Shouldn't really matter who the player repented before or after their career here. It's about what they achieved while at the Raiders.

As much as I loved Chicka, I don't think he is even the best winger we've had, let alone a top 10 player of all time. Hard to vote him off though.
