The Raiders are back at Canberra Stadium in Round 15, for a clash with the troublesome Newcastle Knights. Troublesome for the Raiders, at least, with the Knights having produced upsets in the past three contests between the clubs.

2022 Round 14. Brisbane Broncos 24 - Canberra Raiders 18. It was a another disappointing second half from the Canberra Raiders. It was the sixth time that the Raiders have failed to score a point in the second 40 this year, the eighth time they have failed to score a try after the break. It was probably a match the Raiders should have won, but didn't.

More on Round 14: As I saw it

Team news: Jordan Rapana returns for the Raiders from suspension, after serving a one match ban. He comes straight back on the wing, with James Schiller dropping to the extended bench. Josh Papalii has been named to start at prop, with Corey Horsburgh going back to the bench. On Friday evening, the Raiders announced Jack Wighton had been ruled out of the match, after he had tested positive to COVID. The Raiders are looking to bring Matt Frawley in from outside the original squad to replace him.

Knights fullback and captain Kalyn Ponga failed a head injury assessment in the clash with the Panthers on Sunday, so he will have to pass concussion protocols if he's to play on Sunday. He has been named in the No. 1 jersey. Kurt Mann will start at lock, with Mitch Barnett named in the second row. Lachlan Fitzgibbon drops to the reserves list, while Pasami Saulo has been added to the interchange bench.

Late changes: The Raiders brought Matt Frawley in at five eighth on Saturday afternoon, as a replacement for Jack Wighton who has COVID. Corey Harawira-Naera was also dropped to the reserves list, with James Schiller coming in on the bench. The Knights brought in Adam Clune in place of Jack Clifford at halfback.

History: Canberra has a good record against Newcastle, winning 27 of 52 games, with two draws. But not lately. The Raiders have won four and drawn one match in the last 10 clashes - and only one of the past five. In 2020, the Raiders suffered a disappointing 34-18 loss to Newcastle, in a Round 4 home game transferred to Campbelltown. There was more disappointment for the Raiders in Round 9 last year, losing to the Knights, 24-16, at Wagga Wagga. Then in Round 20, the Knights won, 34-24, in a game transferred to Lang Park and played behind closed doors due to the pandemic.

The Raiders have lost only six of 26 games played against the Knights at Canberra Stadium. The Raiders have won four of the past five games played at the venue. The only loss was in 2018 - and it was an awful, last gasp, 30-28, defeat.

2021 Round 20: Canberra Raiders V Newcastle Knights

2021 Round 9: Canberra Raiders V Newcastle Knights

2020 Round 4: Canberra Raiders V Newcastle Knights

Form: Raiders: WWLWL
Knights: LWLWL

The Knights are coming off an embarrassing, 42-6, loss to the Penrith Panthers. But they're not the only team to have been embarrassed by the Panthers this year. Their recent wins have come against teams at the bottom of the ladder, the Bulldogs (16-6) and Warriors (24-16). They've also suffered recent losses to the Storm (50-2), Cowboys (36-16) and Broncos (36-12).

Betting: The Raiders are $1.45 favourites, with the Knights paying $2.75. The Knights have 7.5 points start in the line betting. The odds for Newcastle have shortened over the week... and by even more on the news of Jack Wighton's positive COVID test.

Stat attack: This is a clash between 11th (Raiders) and Knights (12th) on the ladder. The Knights are ranked last in attack and they are not far off in defence. They are last in the league for possession share, running metres, post contact metres, line breaks, tackle breaks and try assists. The Knights have the worst points differential in the NRL. The Raiders are ranked second last in the competition for set completions and third for errors. That's their biggest problem.

2022 Season record: Raiders 6 and 8 (11th, -41)
Knights 4 and 9 (12th, -176)

Attack: Raiders 18 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked equal 10th on tries scored
Knights 13 points and 2 tries scored per match, ranked 16th on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 21 points and 4 tries conceded per match, ranked seventh on fewest tries conceded
Knights 26 points and 5 tries conceded per match, ranked equal 13th on fewest tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 49 per cent, Knights 47 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 74 per cent, Knights 75 per cent

Running: Raiders 1517 running metres per match
Knights 1312 running metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 31, Knights 24 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 3, Knights 3 per match

Try assists: Raiders 2, Knights 2 per match

Offloads: Raiders 13, Knights 9 per match

Kicking: Raiders 495 kicking metres per match
Knights 514 kicking metres per match

Tackling: Raiders 89 per cent tackle efficiency
Knights 88 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1355 running metres conceded per match
Knights 1466 running metres conceded per match

Errors: Raiders 11, Knights 10 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 7, Knights 6 per match

Key match-ups:

Jordan Rapana and Edrick Lee: Jordan Rapana may be a veteran winger these days, but he was certainly missed last week. He only has one try - and that is the job of wingers, to score tries. But he does a lot of work. This season, he has produced three try assists, two line breaks, 42 tackle breaks and averaged 123 metres per game. Edrick Lee is a Canberra Raiders junior who is now with his third NRL club. He'll join his fourth club next year when he heads to the Dolphins. In 2022, he has two tries, two line breaks, 20 tackle breaks and averaged 129 metres per game. For those who love fantasy footy, Rapana is averaging 30 points per game, Lee 23. I'll give this match-up to the veteran.

Jack Wighton and Anthony Milford: Jack Wighton was probably the Blues' man of the match in Origin I, but he was understandably a bit quiet backing up against the Broncos - by his high standards. He produced six runs for 43 metres, four tackle breaks, two offloads one forced line drop out and 250 kicking metres. In 2022 he's scored three tries, has five try assists and seven line break assists and averaged 91 running metres. Anthony Milford was a young star for the Raiders before being poached by the Broncos. Sadly, he probably never reached his full potential in Brisbane. After an off field incident, the Knights have thrown him a lifeline this year. He's made three appearances this year, since the NRL agreed to register him. He's posted one try assist, one line break assist and averaged 100 running metres. Jack Wighton wins this match-up clearly.

Hudson Young and Mitch Barnett: After being dropped to NSW Cup in Round 6, Raiders second rower Hudson Young is now in the best form of his career. He's scored four tries and produced one line break assist, 13 offloads and and average 103 running metres this year. He lines up against a former Raider, Mitch Barnett, this week. The fiery Barnett has now played over 100 games with Newcastle, but heads to the New Zealand Warriors in 2023. He's yet to cross the white stripe in 2022, and has 10 tackle breaks, six offloads and an average 101 running metres to his name. Young gets the "skin" here.

Joseph Tapine and David Klemmer: If Canberra's Joe Tapine is not the best prop in the NRL right now, he's pretty close. Against the Broncos last week, he produced 243 running metres, four tackle breaks, six offloads and 33 tackles. I gave him a rare "9" rating for that match. He has more post contact metres (964) than any player in the NRL - but on a per game basis, he is behind Payne Haas and Addin Fonua-Blake among the forwards. He also ranks fifth for running metres in the competition - first among the forwards. There's a few forwards ahead of him on a per game basis in that department, but not many.

His opponent this week, David Klemmer, has been below his best in 2022. But this year, he's still got a very respectable 143 running metres and 23 tackles per game, 10 tackle breaks and 22 offloads in nine appearances. Tapine has 160 running metres and 30 tackles per game, 32 tackle breaks and 26 offloads in 14 matches. Tapine wins the match-up for mine.

My tip: Most of the statistics suggest that the Raiders should win this game. They are deserved and clear favourites. Of course, there are no easy games in the NRL and there are no certain results. The Knights have shown the Raiders that on multiple occasions in the past five years. Some of the Raiders' numbers aren't too flash either. The Raiders have really lifted their performances since the horrible loss to the Warriors in Round 8. But they've still got a long way to go. Poor second halves have again cost them recent games against the Eels and the Broncos. But the Raiders should be too good. They really should. Raiders by 1-12.

What they're saying:

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart on fullback Xavier Savage: "He is learning and improving every game. It's a tough job, fullback. A really tough job. Go and ask any of the guys you know that have been there for a long time and they'll tell you how tough a position it is to play. Each game he's learning and each game he's actually playing better. He's definitely improving very fast."

Petrified by this game. Way more than any other recent game. Knights have been absolutely steaming but Canberra are just the team to get Milf and Ponga into form.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

I have no doubt there would be a fountain of excuses forthcoming if we were to lose this game…but really, there are no excuses for losing this one.

Knights are a garbage bottom 4 side. We are at home. We need the W to stay in touch with the top 8.

Therefore there is a good chance we will blow it and will be hearing about the bounce of the ball post game.

Whitehead (as the right side second rower) has been torn apart by Ponga even when he was in better fitness and form. Today could be brutal.

I’ll actually extend the no excuses sentiment to our season as a whole.

Our run home is actually really favourable. 8/10 games are against bottom 9 sides.

No excuses. If we fail to make the 8 it is another resounding failure for Ricky and the team.

I am preparing for us to put it together, blow them away 46-6 and then return to normal next week and never find that type of form again this season.

It's the Knights. They're a bogey side, along with Manly and Brisbane. No matter how bad they are going or how many gun players they have out, they generally find a way to beat us. In the past 20 games against them, we've conceded more than 25 points per game on average. We've only conceded less than 20 points to them once in the past 13 games. They know how to put a score on us. And this is a team that has made the finals only twice since 2013 (both in the last two seasons) and won 3 wooden spoons. We're kidding ourselves.

Agreed. I don’t know why but I am preemptively furious about how we are almost guaranteed to butcher this.

We play a mediocre knights and then a mediocre dragons next week which will take us into the top 8 if we win both.

Enough with the bs excuses and cop outs.

Just be competent and get the job done for a change.

The thing is I'm also not interested in us putting these types of teams away in unconvincing fashion, but that's what we'll probably do if we do win. Expect a 30-26 scoreline or somesuch.

Think someone said earlier with a win today we’d go 4-0 with Frawley and 3-8 with Wighton I think it would be.

Should that happen the drums of moving Wighton will keep getting a little louder…

We've beaten 2 teams by 20 this year, otherwise it's a limp over the finish line when we actually win.
Our for and against sucks.
I hope we actually play for 80.
It's NEWCASTLE ****!!
