AT A GLANCE: The Illawarra Steelers accounted for the Canberra Raiders on Saturday, winning on home turf, 30-12. Steelers centre Hayden Buchanan was the star, making big incursions and scoring three tries. The Steelers led 10-0 at half time, thanks to tries to winger Finnley Egan and Buchanan.

A brilliant pass from Raiders fullback James Croker set up a try for winger Patrick Dawson four minutes into the second half. That saw the gap between the teams reduced to just four. But five minutes later, Buchanan got his second try of the game, after Croker was forced into error by a Steelers gang tackle. A try to Raiders half Jonah Anderson in the 45th minute kept the Green Machine in the game. But it was all the Steelers in the closing stages.



The Raiders have dropped to sixth place on the ladder, due to points differential. But they are equal with the three other teams above them on 12 competition points - the Eels, Steelers and Knights. They are also only one competition point adrift of the second placed Panthers and two points behind the first placed Bulldogs. But there are others biting at their heels. So a good win over the eighth placed Balmain Tigers in Round 9 is essential for the Raiders' finals hopes.

The Tigers produced a 23-8 win over the the Central Coast Roosters at Morry Breen Oval on Saturday. They led 11-0 at half time, with halfback and captain, Alex Conti booting a field goal just before the break. They scored four tries to two, finding an answer for both of the Roosters' second half tries.

The Tigers now have four wins to their name, the Raiders five. The Raiders have the slightly better attack (24 points scored per match, 21 for the Tigers). However, Balmain has the slightly better defence (19 points conceded per game, compared with 21 for the Raiders). The Raiders have a WWLWL form line in their past five games - while the Tigers have won four of their last five.

The Raiders have not played the Tigers since Round 2 of 2019, when the Green Machine won 18-10 at Kippax. Michael Asomua was one of the three try scorers for Canberra that day. The Raiders have won all three matches played between the clubs since 2017.

Team news: Lucas McPherson comes in on the bench, with Callum Rossiter dropping back to fresh reserve. The Raiders team is otherwise unchanged.

AT A GLANCE: Undefeated no longer. The Illawarra Steelers upset the ladder leading Canberra Raiders at a wet Ron Costello Oval at Shellharbour on Saturday. The Raiders had not lost a match in the opening seven rounds, but they looked flat against a determined Steelers outfit. The Raiders' defence was uncharacteristically poor at times. There were too many missed tackles and too many errors. But some valuable lessons were no doubt learned - and the loss does release the pressure that comes with the undefeated tag.

The Steelers led 14-0 at half time, with former Raider and winger Jacob Haeata one of the try scorers for the home team. Canberra showed some added enthusiasm in defence in the second half - and crossed for two tries. Centre Atini Tuialii scored in the 43rd minute, while winger Jacob Iosefa raised some faint hopes of a late comeback, when he crossed in the 61st minute. Three kicks ahead and some pinball set up the Iosefa try. It was quite incredible, really. First Iosefa regathered a kick ahead from Afamasaga, before kicking it himself. Sam Gash then kicked again, with ball rebounding for Iosefa. The Raiders trailed 20-10 at that point. But the Steelers sealed it with a try to Te Umuariki Heremia-Tukere in the final seconds. Final score, 26-10.



The Raiders are still on top of the competition ladder, but they have been joined on 14 competition points by the Penrith Panthers. Canberra's Round 9 opponents, the Balmain Tigers sit in 12th place on the ladder - and a victory for the Green Machine would wrap up the minor premiership.

Balmain suffered a 22-18 loss to the Melbourne Storm on Saturday at Comely Banks Reserve. The Tigers have produced three wins in 2023 - and won two of their past five, against the Bulldogs (20-16) and the Rabbitohs (26-20). They have also posted recent losses to the Steelers (54-4) and Roosters (46-4). The Raiders have the best attack and the equal best defence in the competition. The Tigers have conceded 118 more points than they've scored.

The Round 9 opponents have not met since 2019 - when the Raiders won, 34-10, in Week 1 of the finals at HE Laybutt Field. Junior Tupou, now with the Tigers, scored a double for the Raiders that day. Earlier that year, in Round 2 at Kippax, the Tigers beat the Raiders, 44-16. In the four games played between the clubs in this grade since 2016, the Raiders have won two, and the Tigers two.

Team news: Ryan Woolley returns on the wing, with Jacob Iosefa moving into the centres and Eddie Tiaina dropping to fresh reserve. Captain Owen Hromow shifts to prop, with Jack Anderson taking over at lock. Tahrell Feaveai drops back to the bench. After scoring four tries for the Monaro Colts in the Laurie Daley Cup Grand Final last weekend, Xavier Cacciotti has been included on the bench. It means the team has three hookers in the squad. It gives the coach a couple of live wires to inject off the bench.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup team suffered a 44-6 loss to the Illawarra Steelers at Shellharbour on Saturday. The defeat and the dimensions of it will make it difficult for the Raiders to make the top six, with one match remaining before the finals. Canberra has now dropped to seventh, on points differential.

The Steelers dominated from the get go, scoring four tries in quick succession. They led 22-0 after 17 minutes, with centre Mia-Rose Walsh getting a double. The Raiders, in contrast, looked flat, and never really got into the game. A try to second rower Sulieti Ahio just three minutes into the second half gave the home team a 28-0 lead - and the result was put beyond any doubt.

Canberra hooker Kayla Fleming scored the Raiders only try in the 39th minute - after Illawarra fullback Darcy Eade had been sent to the sin bin for a professional foul. The 12 woman Steelers outfit hit straight back, with prop Ella Koster scoring her second try. And Illawarra went on with it from there. Mia-Rose Walsh ended with a hat trick, while both Koster and Ahio got doubles.



The Raiders meet the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Round 9 at Redfern Oval - a game they must win and win well if they're to have any chance at sneaking into the top six. The Rabbitohs are coming off a 30-8 win over the Sea Eagles at Erskineville Oval, their second of the year so far. The victory broke a four game losing streak, against the Knights (22-6), Sharks (20-10), Panthers (28-0) and Roosters (44-0).

The Raiders won narrowly (16-14) when these teams met in Round 4 last year at Redfern. It is the only contest played between the two clubs to date.

Team news: Abbie Grant replaces Bonnie Brewer at five eighth for the Raiders. Beyonce Marela and Olivia Faitua are the new starting props, with Maddison Morris shifting to the second row.

The SG Ball side sits on top of the table going into their final game of the season, with a win against the Tigers cementing the minor premiership. Reflecting on last week’s first loss of 2023 , Marrapodi says intensity is the sole focus.

“I said to the players during the week, normally when there is a lot of things to work on normally it just comes down to one thing and that’s intensity and turning up with the right attitude,” Marrapodi said.
