Does seem a bit rough to play the game in Melbourne at a venue 81kms from the airport. I am sure they are up and back on the day and have to go all the way across town to an area that was country when I was growing up.

Sadly, Sunday’s Monaro Colts games have been shifted to NSWRL HQ at Bruce. That’s the old Raiders HQ.

Rourke O’Sullivan enjoying step up to Harold Matthews coach

Having been an assistant coach of the Harold Matthews side over the past couple of seasons, Rourke O’Sullivan has taken the reins as head coach this year and has been loving the new role.

“I’ve been really enjoying it. I’ve been involved over the last couple of years as an assistant coach but it’s been awesome to be coaching with my other assistant coaches and having a bit more responsibility,” O’Sullivan said.

“The boys have been a massive part of that, they’ve done everything that we’ve thrown at them. They’ve just taken it with open arms and are just all willing to learn.”

How good would it have been to watch live streams of both games today?

The NSWRL live streamed games from one ground today to broadcast the SG Ball, Harold Matthews and Tarsha Gale Cup. No other games in those three competitions were covered. The Daily Telegraph has decided not to live stream any games this year (I’ve been told the NSWRL asked for too much money).

The NSWRL covers all the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cup games… and that’s good for people in the country, with long distances to travel. But Wyong and Melbourne are a long way from Canberra too.

The QRL broadcasts every game in their statewide competitions, from Q Cup down to junior reps. About 430 games last year on QPlus.tv via Cluch: https://qplus.tv/ A $50 annual subscription gives you all the games. The CRRL does a similar thing through Bar TV Sports. Minor sports from all over the country live stream all games in their competitions.

Why can’t the NSWRL organise this? It’s 2023!

Jaxon Lavender played SG Ball today. Jack Piccirilli also made the squad, but looks like the others didn’t.

Totally agree. All the games are of course filmed so to stream the coverage is not particularly difficult.

MATCH REPORT: Colts too strong for Roosters in Johns Cup

Monaro Colts proved a tough task for the Central Coast Roosters in their Round One Andrew Johns Cup clash at NSWRL Bruce HQ in Canberra on Sunday.

The Colts galloped out of the blocks with four tries and a 20-nil lead in little over 20 minutes. The first of them came from a bustling effort by centre Jonah Alaia, followed by winger Jet Millard dotting down in the left corner, fullback Cooper Johnston grabbing a bomb between the posts, then Millard scoring a second soon after.

14. Cooper Flood 15. Hayden Brown 17. Thomas McKenna 18. Oliver Ajaka-Brown

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders staged a 30-28 victory in their season opener against the Central Coast Roosters at Morry Breen Oval on Saturday. The Raiders led 20-12 at the break, with first half tries to centres Lachlan Cananan and Harry Hudson and halfback Jonah Anderson. Canberra went further ahead when lock Andrew Muir crossed in the 35th minute. But the home team staged a comeback. They scored three tries in the space of 10 minutes, taking the lead with just seven minutes remaining. But in the shadows of full time, Raiders winger Emmett Smith delivered the match winning try.

The Raiders meet the Central Coast's Sydney cousins at Henson Park in Round 2 - and the Sydney version of the Roosters will be an even tougher proposition. They placed second on the ladder in 2022, but were knocked out of the finals by the Sharks - losing by just two points in their semi final. The Roosters will again be strong this season, with halfback and captain Toby Rodwell steering the team around the park. Their forward pack features the son of Brad Fittler, Zach - and the lock is highly rated. The Roosters produced a 20-14 win over the Eels in Round 1.

These two teams last met in Round 9 of 2021, with the Roosters running out 36-10 winners at Mascot Oval. The Raiders team that day featured current SG Ball players, Sam Gash, Noah Martin, Elvis Nauer-Wood and Siamani Leuluai.

Team news: Raiders five eighth and captain Sam Chapman is out, replaced by Callum Rossiter. The starting team is otherwise unchanged. Patrick Dawson has been added to the bench.

Canberra Raiders

1. Chevy Stewart 2. Jacob Iosefa 3. Siamani Leuluai 4. Atini Tuialii 5. Samuel Gash 6. Keahn Skipps 7. Jalen Afamasaga 8. Niu Mariota 9. Owen Pattie 10. Jake Clydsdale 11. Noah Martin 12. Joseph Roddy 13. Owen Hromow

14. Ethan Alaia 15. Jaxon Lavender 18. Tahrell Feaveai 20. Elvis Nauer-Wood

16. Ryan Woolley 17. Jack Anderson 22. Eddie Tiaina

Sydney Roosters

1. Benjamin Dufficy 2. Kalem Surya 3. Cooper Toy 4. Zac Sarfati 5. Kade Maguire 6. Cassius Tia 7. Haydan Ritchie 8. Braydan Purcell 9. Benaiah Ioelu 10. Delasalle Vaa 11. Ethan Roberts 12. Michael Abdow 13. Salesi Foketi

14. Jayden Smith 15. Zack Visconti 16. Hayden Barton 17. Javahn Stevenson-Hala

18. Kye Durie

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced a stunning 66-0 victory over the Storm at Comely Banks Reserve in Melbourne on Saturday. It was a 12 try demolition. Much vaunted new recruit, Chevy Stewart showed why he is much vaunted, scoring a hat trick despite a leg problem. Lock Owen Hromow scored the opening two tries, while seven other players shared in the honours - including club debutants, Owen Pattie, Atini Tuialii, Tahrell Feavai, Jaxon Lavender and Ryan Wooley. There were a number of late changes. Ethan Alaia was brought into the halves, while fullback Stewart did not enter the game until after the opening exchanges. But it made little difference to the Raiders. Thanks to points differential, the win sees Canberra sitting on top of the competition ladder. The Melbourne Storm finished last season with the wooden spoon, and it could be another tough season for them.

In Round 2, the Raiders travel to Henson Park for a clash with 2021 and 2022 minor premiers, the Sydney Roosters. The Roosters went to a 20 point lead in last year's Grand Final after just 25 minutes. But the Panthers went on to score 22 unanswered points, with a try in the final minutes giving them an extraordinary two point victory. Sydney fullback Benjamin Dufficy, half Cassius Tia and second rower Michael Abdow are the only players from that Grand Final who turned out in the Roosters' Round 1 clash with the Eels on Saturday. It was a close affair, with Parramatta running out 28-22 winners. Regardless of that result, the Roosters will be a serious test for the Green Machine.

Two players from the Roosters' 2022 Grand Final team are now with the Raiders. Forward Vena Patuki Case is now in green - and was a late inclusion at starting prop in this grade in Round 1. Half Ethan Strange has also joined Canberra - and is expected to be starting the year in Jersey Flegg in 2023, after spending the preseason with the top squad.

The Raiders last met the Roosters in Round 9 of 2021, suffering a 30-24 defeat at Henson Park. It was the last game the Raiders would lose that premiership winning season, while the Roosters were knocked out in a semi final against the Steelers.

Team news: After a late decision to start Chevy Stewart off the bench last week, he's been named at fullback for this match. Sam Gash moves back to the wing, while Ryan Wooley moves to the reserves list. Keahn Skipps has been named at five eighth, after he was a late withdrawal in Round 1. Ethan Alaia moves back to the bench. Another late withdrawal last week, Niu Mariota, has been named at starting prop, with Vena Patuki Case out of the squad.

14. Maddison Morris 17. Shayla Moreton-Stewart 22. Ruby Morrisey 24. Beth Loco

20. Hunter Ings

Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy

1. Krystal Bulmer 2. Paige Lowe 3. Joy Levy 4. Lailani Montgomery 5. Mia Barber 6. Brooke Talataina 7. Skyla Adams 8. Phoenix Lamese 9. Imogen Hei 10. Eliza Lopamaua 11. Ally Bullman 12. Jaydah Tofae 13. Tavarna Papalii

14. Miya Rapana-Faifua 15. Moanalei Brown 16. Sophie Smith 17. Ilisia Haumono 18. Rebecca Prestwidge 19. Shanice Talataina

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup team will play their first match of season 2023 against the 2022 premiers - the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy. The Roosters have played in the last two Grand Finals in this grade, and were undefeated last year. They defeated the Newcastle Knights, 12-10, in the 2022 decider. In Round 1, the Roosters continued their unbeaten run - defeating the Eels 24-4. So it will be a tough start for the Green Machine.

There is a good deal of excitement in the nation's capital around the women's game this year - with the Raiders entering the NRLW for the first time. The Tarsha Gale Cup squad can now aspire to playing in green at the highest level. The Raiders finished in 10th place last year, winning just two of their eight matches. They produced victories over the Rabbitohs and Bears - but lost, 32-6, to the Roosters in Round 3. Coach Josh Hardy has focused the preseason preparations on improving the team's defence. Form in the trials has not been strong, but the only games that count start now. We can expect fullback Georgia Willey to again be a leading light in the team. She represented NSW/ACT Schools against Queensland in an Origin curtain raiser at Lang Park last year - and was part of the inaugural Australian Schoolgirls tour to Fiji.

Team news: The Raiders have named a new look halves combination, while the experienced Georgia Willey takes her place at fullback and Kayla Fleming will start at dummy half.

Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup coach Josh Hardy happy for 12 debutants

Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup coach Josh Hardy has been impressed with his squad’s pre-season efforts, with 12 players set to make their debut in green on Saturday.

“Preparations have been going alright, we’ve had some mixed results in our trials but that’s come back to trialing a number of combinations," Hardy said. "We’re looking forward to this weekend, we are going to have 12 debutants in Raiders colours so that’s exciting especially in the female space and the NRLW."

AT A GLANCE: It was a tough afternoon for the Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup team at Henson Park on Saturday. In their first game of the 2023 season, they were defeated, 38-6, by last year's premiers, the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy. The Roosters scored seven tries in all, with the Raiders saved from posting a duck egg by a last minute try to lock Aaliyah Lomas. Roosters five eighth Brooke Talataina was difficult to contain, scoring a double.

In Round 3, the Raiders are on the road again, heading to the north shore of Sydney for a clash with the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval. The Sea Eagles are coming off a 16-8 defeat to the Parramatta Eels at Kellyville in Round 2. They led 8-0 at half time, but it was all the Eels in the second half. The seventh placed Sea Eagles have one win to their name so far, beating the Wests Tigers, 16-12 in their opening game of the year. Manly are in their first season of Tarsha Gale Cup, so these two teams will meet for the first time on Saturday.

Team news: The Raiders have named an unchanged starting line up. Hunter Ings replaces Maddison Morris on the bench.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders are 2 and 0 after the first two rounds of the Harold Matthews Cup. They sit in fourth place on the competition ladder after defeating the Sydney Roosters at Henson Park on Saturday. There has been plenty of noise about the Roosters' prospects in 2023 after finishing in second place last year. But the Raiders proved to be too strong for them in Round 2. The Raiders led 18-12 at half time, and held the Roosters scoreless in the second half - running out 34-12 winners. The Raiders scored six tries in all, with bench player Brock Apolevski bagging a double. Highly rated Roosters lock Zach Fittler, the son of Brad Fittler, was a game day withdrawal. But the Raiders also had some late changes, with Brayden Darmody switched to five eighth and James Croker taking over at fullback.

The Raiders travel to Brookvale in Round 3 for a clash with the Sea Eagles. The Manly outfit lost 38-6 to one of the competition favourites, the Western Suburbs Magpies, in their season opener - and had a very early bye in Round 2. So they'll be keen to notch up a win. In the last meeting between these two teams - in Round 1 last year - the Raiders were 32-6 victors at Kippax. The Sea Eagles are 2 and 1 against the Raiders in the three matches played over the past five years.

Team news: There are no changes to the team that took to the field last week.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have opened their season with two wins in a row. They remain on top of the competition ladder after beating the Sydney Roosters, 38-28, at Henson Park in hot conditions in Round 2. The Raiders started strongly, with three straight tries in the opening 15 minutes - to wingers Jacob Iosefa and Sam Gash and hooker Owen Pattie. Roosters five eighth Cassius Tia got one back in the 17th minute. But the Raiders quickly took back control. Tries to half Jalen Afamasaga and fullback Chevy Stewart - and a second to Iosefa delivered a 32-6 lead to the visitors at half time.

When Canberra second rower Noah Martin crossed three minutes into the second half, it seemed like a case of 'Raiders by how many?'. However, the Roosters staged a second half comeback, scoring four tries in a row - with winger Kade Maguire getting a double. In the end, the Raiders held on for a 10 point victory.

The Raiders meet the Sea Eagles at Brookvale in Round 3 - a team yet to record a win. Their Round 2 match against the Warriors in Auckland was postponed due to severe weather conditions. The Sea Eagles lost 40-18 to the Western Suburbs Magpies at Campbelltown in their first game of the year. Can the Raiders start the season with three in a row? Here's hoping they can, as there are four other undefeated teams biting at their heels on the ladder. The Sea Eagles feature highly rated half Latu Fainu and the grandson of Immortal Bob Fulton, Jake.

The Sea Eagles finished mid-table, along with the Raiders in 2022. The Green Machine lost, 20-18, to Manly in Round 1 last year at Kippax. It was a game the Raiders seemingly had in their keeping - until Manly scored two late tries. In 2021, the Raiders produced a memorable, 20-18, victory over the Sea Eagles at Leichhardt in a semi final. Canberra went on to win the Grand Final against the Steelers the next week.

Team news: Ryan Woolley will start on the wing in the place of Sam Gash, while Elvis Nauer-Wood replaces Jake Clydsdale at starting prop. Jayden Wolfe, who lined up for the Monaro Colts last week, has been added to the bench.

Harold Matthews class of 2022 stepping up to SG Ball

Canberra Raiders SG Ball coach Peter Marrapodi says he has been impressed with how the graduates from the 2022 Harold Matthews team have stepped up to the next grade this year.

“The Harold Matts guys have been excellent. I think on the weekend we had 11 bottom age players out of the 17 so it’s where the majority of our players have come from," Marrapodi said. "They are doing a great job considering how young our squad is. We’ve got a lot of players that were training up with the 21’s and first grade in the off-season.”

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced their first win of the Tarsha Gale Cup season on Saturday, defeating the Manly Sea Eagles, 28-22, on Saturday.

The Sea Eagles were first to score through half Aaliyah Haumono - in the first ever appearance for a Sea Eagles women's team at Brookvale Oval. Aaliyah is the daughter of former Manly second rower, Solomon Haumono.

The Raiders hit back in the 12th minute, with star fullback Georgia Willey crossing for a try near the posts. Canberra was never headed after that. Kayla Fleming - who was shifted to lock in a late change - followed up with a try under the posts in the 17th minute, while Willey got her second five minutes later. A late try to Manly centre Taleena Nelson saw the Raiders go to the break with a 16-12 lead.

The scoring see-sawed in the second half, but tries to five eighth Bonnie Brewer and prop Beyonce Marela kept the Green Machine in front.

The Raiders return to Canberra for their first home game of the season in Round 4 - a clash with the Wests Tigers. The Tigers are coming off a 26-0 defeat at the hands of the Rabbitohs at Kirkham Oval, Camden. They have produced a 1 and 2 start to the season, with their sole victory coming over the Dragons (18-14) at Cabramatta in Round 2. The Raiders (sixth) are in front of the Tigers (10th) on the ladder, but that's largely because Canberra has an extra two competition points from a bye. The Raiders have a slightly better points differential and better attack on a per game basis. The Tigers, however, have produced the better defence.

The Tigers won the last contest between the two clubs, 24-12, at Kirkham Oval in Round 6 of 2022 - and all five contests since 2018.

Team news: The Raiders have named an unchanged line up.

14. Cooper Black 15. Maddax Fui 16. Archie Duncombe 17. Cooper Clarke

18. Callum McMenemy

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Canberra Raiders have opened their season with three straight wins - and are one of only two teams still undefeated. They sit on top of the competition along with the Western Suburbs Magpies - though the Raiders are running second, on points differential. The start to the year is all the more impressive because the Green Machine has yet to play at home.

On Saturday, the Raiders beat the Manly Sea Eagles, 30-14, at Brookvale Oval. The Raiders scored first, through second rower Samuel Griffin, in the 12th minute. Tries to Manly's Joshua Weightman and Fakavale Tonga saw the home team take a 10-6 lead to the break. But it was almost all the Raiders in the second half. They scored four tries to one, with winger Lachlan Cunanan getting a double. Weightman also ended with two tries for the Sea Eagles.

It will be a top of the table clash in Round 4, when the Raiders host the Magpies at Kippax. The Magpies are one of the competition favourites, so this match will be Canberra's biggest challenge of 2023. Western Suburbs produced a 32-12 win over the Rabbitohs at Kirkham Oval on Saturday - and have also already disposed of the Dragons (16-8) and Sea Eagles (38-6). The Raiders have the slightly better attack of the two teams over the opening rounds - averaging more than 30 points per game. However the Magpies have been clearly better in defence, conceding less than nine points per match (Raiders 18).

The last time these teams met was in last year's epic semifinal at Kogarah Jubilee Stadium. The Raiders took a two point lead with seven minutes remaining, through a Sam Gash penalty goal. But a try to Tajh Colquhoun in the 68th minute broke the Raiders' hearts. The match, ultimately won 20-16 by the Magpies, ended in controversy, with three Wests players sent from the field in the final minute. Not that that made any difference for Canberra.

Since that last encounter, most players have moved up to SG Ball. Only Luke Laulilii and Nathaniel Gallagher survive from the Magpie's 2022 semifinal team, while Jonah Anderson is the only survivor for the Raiders.

In the last five matches between the clubs in this grade, the Raiders have won three. However, they have not beaten the Magpies since 2019.

Team news: Zildjian Tafili returns at starting prop, with Thomas Handsaker dropping out of the squad. Andrew Muir replaces Brock Apolevski, who moves back to the bench. Bench player Byron Cahill also drops out of the top 17.

1. Chevy Stewart 2. Lekani Mpaso 3. Siamani Leuluai 4. Atini Tuialii 5. Ryan Woolley 6. Keahn Skipps 7. Ethan Alaia 8. Niu Mariota 9. Owen Pattie 10. TBA 11. Noah Martin 12. Joseph Roddy 13. Owen Hromow

14. Xavier Cacciotti 15. Jaxon Lavender 18. Tahrell Feaveai 20. Elvis Nauer-Wood

16. Eddie Tiaina

Western Suburbs Magpies

1. Heath Mason 2. Faaletino Tavana 3. William Craig 4. Solomone Saukuru 5. Ofele Lene 6. Lachlan Galvin 7. Luke Keppie 8. Jordan Miller 9. Tallyn Da Silva 10. Christopher Faagutu 11. Metuisela Taungatua 12. Zakauri Clarke 13. Kit-kamisi Laulilii

15. Lachlan Bush 16. Mou Taumaletila-Maulolo 17. Elijah Pettit-Young 19. Masei Tavui

18. Teancum Brown

AT A GLANCE: The Raiders remain in first place on the competition ladder, after defeating the Manly Sea Eagles, 18-14, at Brookvale Oval on Saturday. They are one of four undefeated teams - with the Magpies, Eels and Panthers snapping at Canberra's heels. The Sea Eagles went to early an 6-0 lead, after a break from five eighth Latu Fainu inside the first minute set up a to try centre Koby Douglas. Raiders second rower Joseph Roddy crossed in the 10th minute - allowing the Green Machine to draw level, 6-6. At one stage in the first half, Chevy Stewart was held up over the line, and a try to Tahrell Feaveai on the next play was disallowed. But the two teams went to the break at six apiece.

Manly edged ahead in the 45th minute, with winger Teapo Stoltman scoring the first of his two tries. And it wasn't until the final 10 minutes that the game was broken open by the Raiders, with fullback Chevy Stewart and half Keahn Skipps scoring back to back tries, in the space of three minutes. Stoltman got his second try with less than 90 seconds left on the clock, but despite having one last chance, it was too late.

The Raiders will face their sternest test yet when they meet the Western Suburbs Magpies at Raiders Belconnen in Round 4. It is is a blockbuster, a tantalising top of the table clash. It will be Canberra's first home game of the season - and the first time the home fans get to see the much vaunted new recruit, Chevy Stewart. The Magpies are coming off a 50-4 win over the Rabbitohs in Round 3. They've also posted wins over the Dragons (18-10) and Sea Eagles (40-18).

Canberra has the best attacking record in the opening rounds, scoring an average of more than 40 points per game (Magpies 36). But a lot of Canberra's points (66) came in the Round 1 victory over the Storm. That said, a lot of Penrith's points (50) came against the Rabbitohs. The Magpies have the slightly better defence (11 points conceded per game, compared with 14 per game for the Raiders).

Quite a few of the players in both teams were a part of the controversial 2022 Harold Matthews semifinal, won by the Magpies. That adds a little more spice to the contest. The Raiders won the last match in SG Ball between these two clubs, 16-10, in Round 2 of 2021 at Kirkham Oval. The Raiders have not been beaten by the Magpies in this grade since Round 4 of 2016 at Kippax. The Raiders have won all three matches played between the clubs in the last five years.

Team news: Jacob Iosefa is out, with Lekani Mpaso coming into the team on the wing. Ethan Alaia replaces Jalen Afamasaga at halfback, with Monaro Colts hooker Xavier Cacciotti moving onto the bench.

Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews coach Rourke O'Sullivan proud how his side has responded to adversity

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews team is undefeated after three rounds on the road - and now head into a top of the table clash with the Western Suburbs Magpies.

“Our first three weeks being away has been a bit of a challenge," O'Sullivan said. "We’ve actually had a fair few injuries and different combinations as well but all the boys have just done whatever role they’ve been given or position they’ve been put in and have done their job for the team.”

16th min TRY RAIDERS to Aaliyah Lomas. Great run to the line from the bench player. The Tigers have dominated the opening 15 minutes, but the Raiders took their opportunity once they got some territory. Converted Maya McGlynn.
