Canberra Raiders juniors to make short tour to New Zealand in July

Canterbury’s and South Island’s most promising youth players will get a rare opportunity to test themselves against top-quality Australian opposition next month, courtesy of a short tour by a Canberra Raiders under-18s team.

The Raiders’ squad – essentially the best talent coming through the club’s academy, including fringe SG Ball (under-19s) players from this year’s campaign and the players who will make up next season’s SG Ball line-up – will play two matches in four days in Christchurch.

First up, the Raiders will face the Canterbury 19s team on Thursday, July 13, followed by a clash with South Island Scorpions 18s on Sunday, July 16.

“There will be some very talented players in the Canberra team – many I’m sure who will go and eventually play in the NRL – so it’s very exciting,” Southern Zone Rugby League General Manager Liam Turner says.

“Dean Souter, who runs the Junior Raiders High Performance Program, got in touch to see if we were interested in organising a game and it went from there.”

Just went down to watch the first of the two games, thought I better as it's at my local park. The canterbury team have only had 1 training together, Raiders won 40-6(I think)
3 huge props for the Raiders that dwarfed the canterbury side. Centre(3) looked good as did both halves, the 7(possibly a kiwi?) very quick and the red headed 6 seemed a well rounded player, both quite small though.
Best player for the local side Richie Tupuailei is normally a union player, won back to back best in Comp in the Crusaders region(top of south island) first 15 high school competition in 2021 and 2022(few highlights videos of him around), apparently not enjoying union, made 6 or 7 big runs . Looks well suited to the 13 man game

HALF TIME

Canberra Raiders 30 led South Island Scorpions 0

FULL TIME

Canberra Raiders 42 defeated South Island Scorpions 0

The Raiders spent most of the second half tackling, but good defence has become a hallmark of the Raiders’ junior representative team the past few years.

A little bit of match footage at the start of the clip on the lower right. NSW looking slick in the backline.
