Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
Hull FC brace for Jake Connor offers as NRL clubs circle
Hull FC fullback Jake Connor is currently attracting attention from a number of Australian clubs. The Canberra Raiders are one club known to be keen on the 27-year-old after studying his performances and it seems they could be ready to make their move. Having signed a new two-year deal last year, Connor is under contract at the MKM Stadium until the end of the 2023 Super League season.

Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
Along with Morgan Knowles, I can't think of a better signing for the Raiders from England.
Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
That's absolutely his game. His sleight of hand is quite something; brilliant passing game and a good running and kicking game.
He really is a star over here.
His defence is OK, he marshalls it well, but I think that's where his questions will be.
Has the perfect game to chime in and let Wighton get on with running. Can play stand-off or in the centres, but it's from full back where he really grabs hold of the game.
Face doesn't seem to fit in the England team. He's comfortably good enough for international footy.
Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
And his ****-housing makes Bateman look like an amateur.
Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
I was worried when the story said he was behind Jai Field for Man of Steel.
Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
I don't watch a lot of Superleague, but funnily enough this guy has popped up a few times when I did. Keep in mind that this is all based on just a couple of games, but - Very impressive in attack, more about try assists than going over on his own. I thought his defence was actually pretty awful, to be honest.
He was playing FB in the games I watched, but I wonder how he'd go in the #7?

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

With the signing of the Sharks young fullback and now this news, I don't know what to make about Savage's future in green.

Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
All for it, if Savage turns out too good to be on the wing then Connor can play centre (or in the halves)
Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
I dont understand when people see stuff like this and say "well what about player x"kiwi raider wrote: ↑June 2, 2022, 9:17 am All for it, if Savage turns out too good to be on the wing then Connor can play centre (or in the halves)
What's the worst that happens? 3 years from now we have Savage, Conner and Stewart (then 19) are all world class elite fullbacks... GREAT problem to have imo
Reality is Stewart is 2 years away from being a year away, Savage has a potential that ranges from a very high ceiling, a very low floor and everything in between and CNK aint it...
I go no problem bringing in this Conner dude if he's got the skills MrPosh is talking about. We have to find ways to improve the ball playing in this football team and we gotta keep swinging until we hit a home run

Sounds interesting. Not sure how keen I am on a fullback with major issues in defence, but it's hard to find an elite talent that ticks all the boxes.
I'm not convinced as others that you desperately need a ball playing fullback to be successful, but you do need some of that ability in either the 6, 13 or 1 position.

Definitely worth a punt, no idea if it'd translate at the NRL level but most impressive about that highlights is he's reading the defence and making the right pass.

Could be the case. I think it is more likely coaching staff don't think Savage has the ability to be a long term option if they are scouring the earth for specialist fullbacks.kiwi raider wrote: ↑June 2, 2022, 9:17 am All for it, if Savage turns out too good to be on the wing then Connor can play centre (or in the halves)

I really liked the look of Rayden Burns on the weekend. I hope he gets more chances in NSW Cup this year. He is small but with the way the game is going that wouldn't rule him out of an NRL career.
I suspect we are only linked to Connor because we get linked to every English player.

The guy's going to be 28 if he lands here. He spends 2-3 years at fullback then you move Savage from the wing to fullback after a few years of physical development in first grade.

Has any English back shone in the NRL this millennium?

That's a fair point. Pommy back 5 players have especially been a bit hit and miss, particularly in comparison to the forwards.BJ wrote:Has any English back shone in the NRL this millennium?
Sam Tomkins had a similar rep to this bloke and that didn't end too well, but you never know.
It's a big step up in physicality, especially over an entire season, and NRL defences are clearly much better drilled. The outside backs seem to struggle in that area.

Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
Jai Field is blitzing the Super League because he's quality. I think he'd thrive in the NRL if given a proper opportunity, but Wigan has been a great move for him. Good for the Super League too - the English game needs more players like him (although it would be better if they were English rather than Australian).
As for Jake Connor, he's very much a rocks and diamonds player. His ball-playing ability is exceptional. He can tear the opposition apart and win matches on his own. But he lacks discipline and on his bad days, he'll make several poor decisions and lose you the match on his own.
Shaun Wane (England coach) surprised many fans earlier this year when he didn't select Connor in England's preliminary training squad, but it makes sense. An old-school coach like Wane would go mad trying to coach a player like Connor. I imagine Stuart would be the same and it wouldn't work out, but I'd love to be wrong. If Stuart could get the best out of him on a regular basis, it would certainly be entertaining to watch!
Re: Raiders reportedly interested in Hull FC fullback Jake Connor
He can certainly pass. Edit: Wow he kicks in general play too- decently it looks like. We'd either be shifting Fog, Wighton or Savage. That'd be a big call by Rick. We're 5:1 for the English imports to turn out pretty good players so far...

You put him in the halves you'll take away a lot of that space he's enjoying in the highlights. It'd just be a straight move into fullback for me.

Jai Field got completely found out in the NRL, he couldn’t defend in the line and his balling wasn’t up to breaking down NRL defensive units. His only asset he really had was speed and footwork, it’s not enough for the NRL.Daniel wrote:Jai Field is blitzing the Super League because he's quality. Oh he looks just fantastic. Putting players into gaps with short and long passes, this is *exactly* what we need. He might be in the #1 but is a playmaker through and through. Great work Raiders in going for him, next step throw the cheque book at him
If he came, he'd instantly be the best playmaker we have, by a long way. I'm salivating
He could easily, easily play 6 or 7. Many of those situations in the video are basically first receiver type scenarios

Not sure about that. He only started in about 5 or 6 games of top grade. For mine, Field is just doing what Addo-Carr has done for years - look good with speed.
He's winning votes for the MoS because he's shiny and the stuff he does stands out. He looks a tidy player away from the speeds, though nothing special.

Nah, Hasting went to ESL due to his attitude not his playing ability. Clubs wouldn’t touch him because of the fallout when he left the Roosters and the Sea Eagles. Chalk and cheese for me, Hastings had huge expectations from a very young age.MrPosh wrote:To be fair, everyone said the same about Jackson Hastings and now he's doing very well.Postman Pat wrote: ↑June 2, 2022, 6:21 pm17 games over 4 seasons at 2 clubs and had to go to England to continue his professional career, I’d say I’m not the only one who doesn’t rate his chances of success in the NRL.kiwi raider wrote:Not sure about that.
