What should happen to players numbers if they disgrace the club?

Post by cat »

Pj made a good comment about Curtis's player number in the curtis scott thread and it had me thinking

Should players be able to lose their players number? Ie on the record that number is now blank.
And if so what is the threshold for that to kick in?

My personal opinion is that if Finch is found guilty his number goes no question asked

If a player tries to sue the club I'm not sure where I stand

A few clubs might be having similar thoughts, if found guilty again is the Hayne plane still listed at parra?

Can’t say I agree. The player number is simply a sequential number of who played first grade for Canberra. No matter what some disgraceful ex players do, they still played.

It’s not like it’s an award or trophy or medal or something that can be stripped, it’s just a number.
Ata Mariota’s #1 fan. Bless his cotton socks.

The number and player assigned tho that number stay.

Can’t change history.

The club however does not have to celebrate that person

Clubs treat it more then just a number these days, its kinda like your christening name, its part of you, its your identity

Technically as far as I know no one went down to Melbourne and collected up all the grand final rings, deleted all the footage from those grand finals etc
But the record books state there was now no winner those years

The player would always know their number but should it stand on the honour roll of players printed? Should they be invited to for evere green round?

The NRL currently have 2 high profile ex players up on serious criminal charges ( hayne and finch) and some high profile guys up on serious drug charges ( manu vativi for example).

As a fan I think these players should be stripped of their "number- place in club history/invitation to events etc, being listed to vote for in team of the blah blah blah etc

I'm not sure where the threshold is though....

As I said what is considered too bad to be still part of the club?

Do you need to serve time?

Noah never served time that I know of

No he didn’t as far as I recall, but his behaviour was horrible enough to be sacked.

And now he’s in the hall of fame. My point being if the powers that be are prepared to put a guy like Noa on a pedestal, they aren’t going to remove a number off a guy.

If you can tell me what Brett Finch’s number is off the top of your head (without looking it up), then you might have a point.
Otherwise who cares?

Disappointing that the club has honoured someone who left the club in disgrace. I seem to remember he got off on a technicality, and the act government closed the loophole soon after

He played for the Raiders. The number stays used and his his number.

He played here. We don't have to erase club history or pretend he wasn't- that's not the same as supporting him or condoning what he is alleged to do.

Erasing people from history is some weird 1984 stuff. We don't have to invite him to members days or even reunions. But I don't see the benefit in the club doing extra judicial punishments and deciding who/which cases are worth x and which y.

The courts punish people. That's why society has them.

They get a special star next to their number!

The irony of someone who wore green, being stripped of a small largely irrelevant number only to be rewarded with a pair of green overalls and a much larger number.

Can’t rewrite history. It’s just the number they played- not good or bad, just a fact.

Depends how heinous the crime really a little slap and tickle is OK, but punching out grandmas should be struck from the register.

Personally I back this thread to the hilt just because I want to see the legal proceedings of banning an arbitrary number. We better make that Corrections are aware of our player number bannings vs their inmate numbers.

It’s a bit of a silly idea. Has this happened in any sport? I can think of playing numbers being retired, but that’s out of honour for the player.
Feel free to call me RickyRicky StickStick if you like. I will also accept Super Fui, King Brad, Kid Dynamite, Chocolate-Thunda... or Brad.

Won’t happen, the club just bestowed Noa Nadruku into the hall of fame, I mean I love Noa, he was the original Fijian Flyer and a real entertainer, but he sunk 22 Schooners, went on a rampage and beat his wife, so do we strip his number?

We're not the Soviet Union. Our history is our history.

If Finch is found guilty he's a monster. But he's still part of our history.
