Jack Wighton to take up option for 2023 and stay with the Raiders

Jack Wighton to take up option and stay with the Raiders in 2023

Canberra star Jack Wighton is set to end any chance of a move to a rival club next season after informing the Raiders that he plans to take up an option in his lucrative contract for the 2023 season. Wighton was mooted as a potential target for the Dolphins.

Meanwhile Canberra has won the battle for highly touted Sharks Harold Matthews captain Chevy Stewart. The Sharks and Bulldogs wanted to sign him; the Raiders view him as the club’s long-term fullback.

Savage wouldn’t!

Great news on both fronts.

Stuart gets a lot of criticism - and rightly so- but he does OK with attracting players. Young, experienced or otherwise.

Great to see Wighton remain.
Chevy is 18? Won't be seeing our future fullback in first grade for a very long time.

Yeah I don't think we get too excited about 16 year old signings. I;m glad we attracted him to our system- well done all involved. But a tiny fraction of 16 year olds go on to big things. Let's just wish him well and wait a few years until we give him the Savage treatment ;)

Glad Wighton is staying- I like the lad. While not a bad outcome, it’s interesting there weren’t too many counter offers to consider and makes you question if the club got this contract wrong in regards to being too much to the players favour.

Glad were keeping Wighton. I'd like to see him moved away from 6 and playing 13.
The Club should have a crack at Burton:

Funnily enough I don't think I've ever seriously considered the thought of Wighton leaving the Raiders. It's honestly never really crossed my mind.

Can't see Jack ever leaving us. He is part of the fabric, is on good money, is on great terms with Ricky, and I doubt any club would pay him what we do.
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

I'm glad Jack is staying at the Raiders. I wonder if the fact that Sticky is here next year played a part in his signing.

I've not seen Chevy Stewart play. I wish him well in green.

I think the paid by position ideology that has crept into the game is illogical.

You're paid according to your value as a player.

Your value as a player is inextricably linked to the position you play. And thus the impact you have/can have on a game
Nothing illogical about it. Simple team building economics.

The best winger in the world will get half as much on an open market as the 8th best halfback in the world. That's positional value.

That’s your best example Dubs? A contract, widely regarded as an albatross, that was signed 5 years ago?

There’s a reason why other clubs haven’t ever made deals like that for forwards - before or since

Well, I guess you've forgotten David Fifita...

Tom Burgess.

David Klemmer

Jai Arrow.

Angus Chichton

Josh Jackson.

Josh Maguire.

Then there is Luke Brooks

Shaun Johnson.

Moses Mbye.

I'd even add Kalyn Ponga, I think he's vastly over rated.

Not sure Moses is a $900k player either

Not great examples there to advocate paying huge money for non spine players.

David Fifita - pretty much considered to be massive overs by everyone. His form is too hot and cold and he doesn’t influence match results.

Tom Burgess - not sure he’s on that much money. The Burgesses aren’t really that relevant in the NRL these days

David Klemmer - not sure how much money he’s on but it wouldn’t be a million. Origin and Aus rep

Jai Arrow - as above

Angus Chrichton - as above

Josh Jackson - as above

Josh Maguire - as above

Luke Brooks - he’s a halfback not a forward, and considered by everyone to be on huge overs. Not sure how he comes into an argument justifying paying huge money for non spine players when he’s an over-payed spine player

Shaun Johnson - see above. Spine player. Also wouldn’t be on huge money now.

Moses Mbye - see above. Spine player. Also wouldn’t be on huge money now.

Kalyn Ponga - see above. Spine player.

Mitchell Moses - see above. Spine player.

I'm not advocating, I'm pointing out the value for money clubs are getting from those players.....which is little value.

For example I think Papalii gives us very good value for money, as does Tapine. And if the figures are true (I've read Turgess is on $700k) we're getting better value from our props
