The Canberra Raiders broke a five game losing streak on Friday night and now head to Brisbane for Magic Round - and a clash with the Cronulla Sharks.

Last round: 2022 Round 9. Canberra Raiders 14 - Canterbury Bulldogs 4. One of the best things about the Raiders' victory over the Bulldogs was that it was a win. It brought relief, relief that a five game losing streak was over. It should also bring some confidence back to the team. Confidence that they can hold onto a lead, that they can hold on in the second half.

More on Round 8: As I saw it

Team news: Club captain Jarrod Croker has been ruled out for 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury. Matt Timoko shifts back to the left, with Sebastian Kris coming in at right centre. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (corked thigh) has been named at fullback, while Xavier Savage comes in on the bench. The return of Semi Valemei (knee) has been pushed back.

The Sharks will be without fullback Will Kennedy and centre Jesse Ramien. Kennedy was sent off for a coat hanger on Reece Walsh in the clash with the Warriors. He will spend two weeks on the sideline. Ramien was sent to the sin bin for a shoulder to the head of Warriors forward Euan Aitken - and has been suspended for three matches. Nicho Hynes moves to fullback Sharks, with Braydon Trindall taking over at halfback. Connor Tracey replaces Ramien. Dale Finucane takes back the No.13 jersey, with Cameron McInnes dropping to the bench. Former Royce Hunt has been included on the bench, with Andrew Fifita dropping to the reserves list.

Late changes: Adam Elliott has been ruled out of the Raiders squad due to an illness, which is not COVID related. The NRL has given Canberra permission to bring Zac Woolford into the team. He will make his NRL debut. Tom Starling will start at hooker. The Sharks are 1-17.

History: The Raiders have won 39 of 78 matches against the Cronulla Sharks, for a 50 per cent win rate. Canberra has won eight of the past 10 clashes between the clubs - and the past seven straight. Last year, the Raiders won a close encounter in the wet, 12-10, in unconvincing fashion at Kogarah. The Raiders posted a more decisive, 34-18, victory on the Gold Coast - a match remembered for the eye catching performance of Xavier Savage at fullback. In Round 1, the Sharks took a one point lead inside the final 10 minutes, after trailing by 12 points at half time. A Hudson Young try with five minutes remaining sealed the win for the Green Machine. The two teams have never met before at Lang Park.

2020 Round 20 Canberra Raiders V Cronulla Sharks

Form: Raiders: LLLLW
Sharks: WLWLW

The Sharks are coming off a remarkable 29-10 win over the Warriors at home - despite being reduced to 12 men for 65 minutes, and 11 for another 10 minutes. However, Cronulla's form has been a little variable in recent weeks. They went on a four game winning streak after their Round 1 loss to the Raiders. But they have since lost to the Storm (34-18) and the Broncos (16-7). They have also posted recent wins over the Tigers (30-4) and Sea Eagles (34-22).

Betting: The Sharks are $1.25 favourites, with the Raiders paying $4.00. The Raiders have 11.5 points start in the line betting. The Sharks odds have shortened overall since the market opened.

Stat attack: This is a clash between fourth (Sharks) and 12th (Raiders) on the ladder. The Sharks have an advantage over the Raiders in terms of their defence - and an even more decisive advantage in attack. Cronulla is top four in terms of tries scored - the Raiders are bottom four. The Sharks are second in the competition for line breaks, behind the Storm, and first for tackle breaks.

Cronulla's Nicho Hynes (11) and Siosifa Taakai (10) are the top two players in the NRL for line break assists, while both are in the the top 20 for try assists. Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo is first for line breaks, while fellow winger Sione Katoa (eight) ranks equal fourth. All will be players for the Raiders to watch.

Both teams are top four for offloads, the Raiders first. That style has affected the completion rates of both teams. The Raiders are last in the competition in that department and too often, their offloads have been ineffective. The Sharks are first for general play passes, but the Raiders are now 15th on that metric. Canberra started the year throwing the ball around a lot, but have resorted to a more conservative style given their problems in hanging onto the ball. Canberra is off the bottom of the ladder for running metres this week - after clocking up more than 2000 metres against the Bulldogs.

2022 Season record: Raiders 3 and 6 (12th, -73)
Sharks 6 and 3 (4th, +71)

Attack: Raiders 14 points and 2 tries scored per match, ranked 13th on tries scored
Sharks 23 points and 4 tries scored per match, ranked fourth on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 22 points and 4 tries conceded per match, ranked equal eighth on fewest tries conceded
Sharks 15 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked fourth on fewest tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 49 per cent, Sharks 51 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 71 per cent, Sharks 76 per cent

Running: Raiders 1432 running metres per match
Sharks 1669 running metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 28, Sharks 37 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 3, Sharks 6 per match

Try assists: Raiders 2, Sharks 4 per match

Offloads: Raiders 13, Sharks 12 per match

Kicking: Raiders 449 kicking metres per match
Sharks 489 kicking metres per match

Tackling: Raiders 89 per cent tackle efficiency
Sharks 88 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1325 running metres conceded per match
Sharks 1273 running metres conceded per match

Errors: Raiders 12, Sharks 11 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 7, Sharks 7 per match

Key match-ups:

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Nicho Hynes: Nicho Hynes joined the Sharks from the Melbourne Storm this year, after a breakout 2021 season. Those who wondered whether Hynes would be as effective outside the Storm system have had their questions well and truly answered. He's been outstanding. He's got two tries, six try assists, 11 line break assists, eight forced line drop outs and an average of 394 kicking metres. He moves to fullback this week, to cover for the suspended William Kennedy. He'll be just as dangerous there. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad returned to the Raiders' starting line up last week. He hadn't had the best of starts to the year. He's been uncharacteristically uncertain under the high ball. Against the Bulldogs, he produced a try assist, two tackle breaks and 106 running metres in 46 minutes. He left the field with a cork, but is expected to be fit for this game. Even though Hynes hasn't played at fullback this season, he clearly takes out this match-up.

Matt Frawley and Matt Moylan: Matt Frawley took over from the suspended Jack Wighton at five eighth last week and he was one of the Green Machine's best. He's been asked to cover hooker this year, but the left footer admits he's much more at home in the halves and on the left. He scored a try and produced 81 running metres, one line break, two tackle breaks, two line drop outs and 394 kicking metres. His opponent this week, Matt Moylan, is not the player he once was. But he has been complementing new halfback Nicho Hynes well. So far this year, he's scored a try and posted four try assists and five line break assists. I have to admit it surprised me the the numbers for these players on a per game basis are in the same ball park. However, on the eye test, I have to give this match-up to the Sharks.

Corey Harawira-Naera and Dale Finucane. Dale Finucane has also joined the Sharks from the Storm this year - and because he's so influential within a squad, he was named Cronulla captain. Finucane moved to prop last week, but he will be back at lock on Sunday. This season he's averaged 96 running metres and 29 tackles per game. He's also made seven tackle breaks and 262 post contact metres. Second rower Corey Harawira-Naera was shifted to lock last week and played 36 minutes. CHN's relative strength is his attack - and is stronger than Finucane in that department. Finucane has the better tackle efficiency rate (97 per cent, compared with 92 per cent for CHN). But overall, there's not much between the numbers for these two.

My tip: The Sharks are deserved clear favourites in this match. It was a very good performance to defeat the Warriors with a man down on Sunday. That effort might have tired them out a bit - and they will be missing both William Kennedy and Jesse Ramien on suspension. However, the Raiders' problems are more significant - with first choice spine players Josh Hodgson, Jamal Fogarty and Jack Wighton all sitting on the sideline. Canberra has such a shortage of hookers, they are starting back rower, Adam Elliott, in the No. 9 jersey. The recruitment of Nicho Hynes, Dale Finucane and coach Craig Fitzgibbon has done wonders for the Sharks. I was wrong last week, and I'm hopefully again wrong this week. But it is difficult to see the Raiders getting up in this one. Sharks by 13+.

What they're saying:

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart after the win over the Bulldogs: "We don't like losing. We're like all our supporters and people out there. We don't go to prepare to lose. There is so much effort in every game. There's been a lot of work put in. We haven't had a player that hasn't tried hard over the last five weeks. There's not a club or a squad of players I'd prefer to be coaching. And I said that to them pre-game. They're all trying. I'm trying. We're just doing everything we possibly can."

I’m unsure why… but by game day most weeks all seems to be forgiven and a sense of optimism sets in. I hope the boys can rip in today and be there at the back end fighting for a win.

Our pack is still very good and capable of dominating. If they can do that and we can complete at 80% or more, anything is possible

Needed a kick across field more so there. Now a penalty for offside when it should have been a six again? We were outside of their 40.... This rule roulette sucks...
