Did nickman go to the game?
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Well done to the fans. Noted on TV and from those at the ground about having the best support of the weekend.

The crowd is strangely silent during the game. Mostly watched by neutrals I guess.Butters wrote:Well done to the fans. Noted on TV and from those at the ground about having the best support of the weekend.

Yeah. My mate went for the first time. He said it was a bit weird. You picked a team to support for each match but you didn’t really invest into the game, just the key moments.greeneyed wrote:The crowd is strangely silent during the game. I only watched the Raiders game. There was a lady in an Eels jersey in the next bay screaming for the Sharks. Guess she doesn’t like Ricky. But it was pretty quiet mostly. Even the most emotional moments… there was noise, but nothing like you’d hear from a crowd half the size at Canberra Stadium. I’m not a huge fan of the concept. Great response from the Raiders fans heading to The Paddo today, though. Great time had by all.BJ wrote: ↑May 15, 2022, 10:36 pmYeah. My mate went for the first time. He said it was a bit weird. I think the concept adds nothing to crowds, adds nothing to Tv but adds somewhat of a Carnaval atmosphere in the city which also flows onto social media. A bit like grand final week or 9’s.
I see it is something the independent media (social influencer’s) jump all over: just not sure brisbane is the right spot.
Put it in NZ, the UK, the US or Perth, Melbourne.

Canberra Raiders fans unite for Magic Round!
Yeah I was there, dubs. It ended up being the only day I went, but all three games were great.dubby wrote:Did nickman go to the game?
It’s been a cracking weekend all round and my second Magic Round in a row. Nice to not smash my face up this time
I hope it continues in Brisbane well into the future, if it were relocated anywhere other than Townsville most of the mates I’ve gone with simply wouldn’t go
Although it would be fun in Melbourne or Auckland… Sydney should never ever get it though

Haha Magic Round was already booked and paid for, but they almost had to drag me to the game!Thomas Raider wrote:I thought Nickman said he wasn't going to waste his money on this mob anymore!! All talk and no action like the rest of us fair weather fans
Saying that, I’m pretty glad I went, it was a terrific day at the football, marred only by the fact I had to suffer through the game sitting next to Lucy

Really should send one to Auckland. They've had no NRL for 2 years. Best way to reinvigorate the game over there. All on the proviso there's no travel restrictions, which should be the case by then. The Nickman wrote: ↑May 16, 2022, 9:19 amYeah I was there, dubs. Yeah, I loved the 9s in Auckland, it was a fantastic atmosphere and weekend, I’d love a Magic Round there if they really did have to move it from BrisbaneNorthern Raider wrote:Really should send one to Auckland. Suncorp really is perfect for it though
Re: Canberra Raiders fans unite for Magic Round!
I wouldn't mind going next year. I watch nearly every game so I'm sure I'd enjoy the weekend away.

I'd be inclined to go to magic round in Perth or Adelaide

Re: Canberra Raiders fans unite for Magic Round!
I went to Magic Round and loved every minute of it. As a footy head, to get to watch all 8 games for the weekend is a dream come true. I thought the atmosphere around the precinct right from when I arrived on Friday night was electric. Obviously the rain on Saturday was a dampener, both figuratively and literally, but no one can control that.
As a rugby league person, I love the fact you see all the colours of the teams around the one city and the opportunity to mingle with fans of all teams. I think the NRL and Suncorp do it really well with all the activites around the ground and obviously the Caxton St area is just made for this type of event.
I do agree that the atmosphere during the games is different to normal games, but in some ways that is what makes it unique too. I watched all 8 games but was largely silent for 7 of them, but very animated for one. Not everyone one is invested in every game, and there is no doubt that there are plenty of people who go as a social event, enjoy a couple (or significantly more) drinks and watch the footy. I don't think there is enough made of the fact that rugby league has a grand final like most sports, but also three origin matches and now Magic weekend. No other sport in this country can boast five massive events like that.
My view is if you don't like the atmosphere of Magic Round, then that is fine, don't go to that weekend, there are 23 other Raiders games a year that you can attend. Arguably the ticket prices will be better value for money if you just want to attend one game. But if you love rugby league, I couldn't think of a better event to attend. I will be there every year it continues.
