Is the wooden spoon a 2022 reality?

Post by benda »

Depth of Canberra Raiders nightmare revealed

The Canberra Raiders now have more than $2 million worth of playing talent sidelined with the news English international Josh Hodgson is out for the year.Hodgson joins prize recruit Jamal Fogarty, captain Jarrod Croker and young gun Harley Smith-Shields on the Raiders long term injury list.

The reality is they’re a snowflakes chance in hell of making the finals and in all likelihood will be flat out avoiding the wooden spoon.

It’s round 3 and we are 1-1. Coming off a loss against the Cowboys in Townsville in March and undermanned. Need to cool their jets.

If we played as well as we did in Round 1 against the Sharks last night we would have lost the same way St George did. Sharks played really poorly against us with really poor 5th tackle options by them.

I agree with Stuart after our loss to Cowboys, we defended well despite the result.

My concern is we simply do not know how to attack. We look lost with the ball. The way I see it, unless we change things up and improve our attack, we won't be able to score 20+ points. Maybe wooden spoon is an exaggeration but our trajectory isn't pointing to anything much better.

I think the Tigers will get the spoon but I think we will be cannon fodder for all of the good teams this year and miss the finals. Based on the poor performance against a pretty poor team in the Cowboys and 2 second half fades from 2 games (6-13 Sharks, 0-18 Cows) I don't see much changed from last year. Then there's the methods from the coach which all but guarantee we won't be fielding our best team possible or using the players in their best positions (e.g. CHN keeps coming back as a middle for his second stint, Kris/Valemei swapped from their natural positions because... ??).

It's not as though there's no talent in the squad. This team should be top 8 but it's being hamstrung with poor selections and bench use and as we saw last year and even the year before, that doesn't tend to get corrected.

It's round 3, calm down. Baldy is a **** **** and the worst of a bad bunch at Fox. Anything he says I'll believe the opposite.

I think we'll make the 8.

I'll reserve judgement until we play Wests.

I reckon we will no more after we play Penrith in Round 7.

We have to play Manly and Storm in that time, teams we usually go bad against.

No spoon for us.

When we are out of contention for finals Stick will start X and Trev, we’ll go on a 4 game winning streak and finish 15th.

And Stick will sign a contract extension.

Couldn’t possibly be in any trouble. Whenever anyone has questioned various long term signings, the coach, cultural issues, leadership or anything else in the club over the last year or so they get shouted down and told everything is fine.

Rapa is back this week and I’ve been assured he’s the long term answer so I’m expecting the season to turn around immediately.

We went into the season knowing Croker was effectively $500-650k deadweight, so nothing changes there. Hodgson and HSS are really substantive losses, a left edge of HSS amd Cotric would have been exciting if it was given a chance. We get Fogarty back in 3 months - our draw isn't as bad as this article makes out. I think we should be on the fringe of the 8 similar to last year. There are a lot or really bad and dysfunctional teams around these days - if we're in the bottom 3 or 4 there will surely be serious pressure on Stuart.

I doubt it, maybe from fans but not from anyone who matter.
I think we're 18 months of terrible football and results away from any meaningful pressure and that's if this season goes as badly as everyone is convinced it will because of the cowboys game

Disagree. We just lost a game. There's no coming back from this. Most definitely time to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside.

I wonder if we beat the Titans if we get the "Is the premiership a 2022 reality" and "how long should Stuart's extension be?" threads

Even better if we did it with Sam Williams at halfback.

The last 41 minutes is for sure top 8.
First 39 is def not.

Why cant we just perform to our potential week in week out.

Titans are better than cowboys i think.

Sigh.

Funny to think if this was last year we've already got enough points to avoid the spoon so long as our F and A stays above -370.

If we continue to make 15 errors and give away 10 penalties/infringements a game, and complete 56% of our sets like we did against the Cowboys we're a bottom 4 team.

However, the reality is we are not going to be that bad across the season. Despite playing absolutely appalling football vs the Cows, it was only 14-6 to them at the 68 minute mark and we were still in the game.

Also, it was again only a 20 minute period vs the Titans where we were absolutely ****. For the first 15 mins of the game we were dominating them, as we did the entire second half.

This is a very good team that has periods of very bad football in them. The key is regularly turning the 20 minutes of **** into just 5 mins of ****. Much like we did in 2019, when stopped losing our composure and giving away back-to-back tries...and nearly won the whole thing.

Oh yeah I only saw the compacted ladder on google and was thinking of the days of 2 byes. Cotric will really be holding out for that 4th win in a single season.
