AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders posted their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval. Winger Steven Numambo got a double - scoring in just the second minute of the game, and again just before half time. A Josh Billing try in the 15th minute helped the Raiders to a 16-12 lead at the break. A double for five eighth Thomas Casey gave the Green Machine a 28-18 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. A try at the death to Manly prop James Uesele brought the home team narrowed the gap, but by then it was too late. The victory leaves the Raiders still sitting in 11th spot on the ladder, but they are just one win behind most of the sides above them. And the win on the road will be good for the team's confidence.

In Round 5, the Raiders will again be on the road, heading to Wagga Wagga for a clash with the Victoria Thunderbolts. The Storm's junior outfit opened the season well, with wins over the Tigers (30-20) and Rabbitohs (36-32). However they lost to the Parramatta Eels at home, 24-18, in Round 3, but still sit inside the top six. They are still to play their Round 4 match against the Canterbury Bulldogs at Gosch's Paddock.

These two teams have met twice before. The Round 2 match in 2019 finished in a 21 all draw. The Raiders scored four tries to three, but goal kicking kept the Thunderbolts in the match. A Jarrett Subloo field goal broke a 20 all deadlock in the 68th minute. But Victoria levelled the game with their own one pointer at the death. Later that year, the Raiders ran out 24-18 winners at Melbourne Stadium. The Raiders have previously won once at Wagga, a 37-12 victory over the Panthers in 2019.

Team news: Raiders winger Steven Numambo moves into the centres, replacing Prinston Esera. Temple Beauchamp comes in on the wing. Hooker Stan Iongi has been promoted to Jersey Flegg, and takes over from Campbell Woolnough. Kaden Williams will start in the second row, with Tate Rhea dropping to the bench. Joshua Pokoney and Carsil Vaikai have been added to the interchange list.

Apart from one bad read Josh Billing looked pretty good in the highlights vs Manly.

Has come through Palm Beach Currumbin, part of Tweed Seagulls and Titans development system. Started as a centre, but has moved into the back row and prop. Played Under 20s Burleigh Bears last year.

18. Hugo Savala 19. Andre Wright 27. Tayson Fakaosi

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders defeated the Victoria Thunderbolts, 40-30, at Wagga Wagga on Saturday. After scoring five tries in the first half, the Raiders led 26-4 at half time and were well in control of the match. Or so we thought. A second try to Raiders five eighth Thomas Casey saw the Raiders take a 26 point lead just two minutes into the second half. But Victoria then piled on five tries in the space of 16 minutes, to level the match at 30 all. An error from the Thunderbolts from the next kick off, allowed the Raiders to grab back control - despite Raiders lock Caleb Tohi sitting in the sin bin for the final stages. On the back of that error from Victoria, Raiders winger Josh Smith scored - and a second try to fellow Mackay Cutters recruit Rayden Burns right on full time sealed the win.

In Round 6, the Raiders will again be on the road, heading to North Sydney Oval for a clash with the ladder leading Sydney Roosters. In their last outing, the Roosters produced a 36-14 win over the Parramatta Eels at Wyong. They have lost just once this season - to the Tigers (28-26) in Round 4. The Raiders sit in 10th place on the ladder, with just two wins to their name. Clearly, it is going to be a tough contest for the young Raiders.

These two teams have met three times recently, with the Roosters winning twice. In 2019, the Roosters won 28-16 at Seiffert Oval in Round 21. But Canberra turned that around in the Grand Final qualifier, beating the eastern suburbs outfit, 22-12, at Jubilee Stadium.

Form: Raiders: LLLWW
Roosters: WWWLW

Team news: Raiders half Sione Vuki has dropped back from NSW Cup this week, and moves into the centres in place of Josh Pokoney. Mitch Souter has been named at starting hooker, with Stan Iongi dropping to the bench. Loghan Lewis has been added to the bench.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a 40-10 defeat at the hands of the Sydney Roosters at North Sydney Oval in Round 6 on Saturday. The game was effectively in the Roosters' keeping after they scored four tries in the opening 15 minutes - with fullback Ethan King bagging a double. The Raiders then struck back scoring two tries in the space of six minutes. Lock forward Caleb Tohi crossed in the 18th minute, with winger Josh Smith following up. But the Roosters quickly reasserted control. The "home" team took a 28-10 lead to the break. Roosters prop Zac Montgomery scored the only two tries of the second half. He notched up a hat trick in the match. The win for the Sydney outfit means they will maintain their spot at the top of the competition ladder.

In Round 7, the Raiders will again be on the road, heading to Penrith Park for a clash with the Panthers. Going into this round, the Panthers were on a three game losing streak - falling to the Knights (24-6), Rabbitohs (18-16) and Bulldogs (32-28). But they went to Melbourne and got a 46-20 win at Gosch's Paddock on Saturday. Penrith have now had three wins so far this season, the Raiders two.

These two teams have met twice in recent years. The Raiders won, 37-12, at Wagga in Round 8 of 2019, with Matt Timoko and Harley Smith-Shields amongst the Canberra try scorers. The teams drew, 26 all, at Penrith in Round 19 that same year, with a Timoko try and Toby Westcott conversion saving the day for the Raiders.

Form: Raiders: LLWWL
Panthers: WLLLW

Team news: In the only team change, Tane Kiriona comes in on the bench, in place of Juwan Compain - with Compain to turn out this week in NSW Cup.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders' Jersey Flegg team will no doubt prefer to forget their trip to the foot of the mountains on Sunday. They were defeated 64-16 by the Penrith Panthers in Round 7, with the home team running in a total of 11 tries. Early in the game, Canberra centre Steven Numambo and prop Eneseli Kamuta scored tries in the space of four minutes. Numambo's try in the corner was the result of a slick attacking shift to the left, while Kamuta crashed over under the posts from short range. That gave the Raiders a 10-6 at the 15 minute mark. But that was as good as it would get for the Green Machine. The Panthers led 28-10 at half time. Raiders hooker Mitch Souter burrowed through in the 45th minute - but that was the end of the scoring for Canberra.

The match marked the debut in green for coach Ricky Stuart's son Jed. He was part of an Under 15s Raiders development squad back in 2016. He's probably grown a bit since then. He now stands at 193 centimetres, and towers over this brother Jackson - who also played in the Raiders' Flegg team in 2019 - and his father. He has recently been playing rugby union, and was selected for the Australian rugby union sevens squad late last year. Like his father, he's now switched codes.

The Raiders travel to Kellyville for a meeting with the Parramatta Eels in Round 8. With a 2 and 5 start to the season, Canberra is hovering just above last place on the competition ladder. They have the worst defensive record in the league - and have conceded an average of 35 points per game so far this year. Their attack is better, but it is not enough to compensate. They have the worst points differential, clearly, in the competition. The Eels lost, 27-20, on Saturday to the Newcastle Knights at Cessnock. They have three wins to their name this season, but have lost three of their past four matches.

These two teams last met in 2019 - with Canberra winning twice in that year. The Raiders won 30-12 at Canberra Stadium in Round 5, with Matt Timoko getting a double. They backed up at Ringrose Park in Round 16, scoring five tries and winning 28-16.

Form: Raiders: LWWLL (2 and 5)
Eels: WLLWL (3 and 4)

Team news: Josh Smith moves to centre, with Steven Numambo switching to the wing. Jed Stuart, the son of Raiders head coach, was a late inclusion last week. He retains a place on the interchange bench.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders bounce back in Jersey Flegg

2 MINUTE READ

The Canberra Raiders have returned to the winners list in the Jersey Flegg Cup, defeating the Parramatta Eels, 30-6, at Kellyville Park on Sunday. It was a much needed bounce back after a 48 point defeat at the hands of the Panthers last week.

The Raiders made a range of late changes. Brad Morkos has been a member of the NSW Cup side in the opening seven rounds. But the inclusion of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad in "reggies" this week, saw Morkos take his place at centre. That allowed Sione Vuki to partner Thomas Casey in the halves - a partnership that worked well for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last year. Loghan Lewis and Jed Stuart were late additions to the starting pack.

The Raiders were first to score in just the fifth minute, with second rower Kaden Williams crossing near the posts. The conversion attempt failed after hitting the metal work. After the restart, the Raiders went on a rampage, going the length of the field in one set - sending Jed Stuart across the line. The Sione Vuki conversion from out wide gave the Raiders a 10-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes.

In the 15th minute an attacking raid down the right side from 40 metres out saw Brad Morkos cross, run around and plant the ball under the posts. The Eels hit back just shy of the 30 minute mark, with a break from half Ethan Sanders setting up a try for benchie Larry Muagututia a couple of rucks later. The two teams went to the break with the Raiders leading 16-6.

It was all the Raiders on the scoreboard in the second half. A break from deep in the Raiders own half, saw winger Steven Numambo show some blistering pace to score in the 43rd minute. Thomas Casey was sent to the sin bin for dissent five minutes later, after a try was denied - but the Eels could not take advantage. A kick to the corner saw Brad Morkos get his double in the 60th minute, while Sione Vuki scored five minutes later - off the back of a Raiders attacking kick and an Eels error. Vuki's conversion of his own try sealed the 30-6 victory.

The win sees Canberra maintain seventh place on the ladder - with a 4 and 4 record over the opening two months of the season. The Raiders will have byes in the next two weeks - and then face the sixth placed South Sydney Rabbitohs in Round 11.

AT A GLANCE

Canberra Raiders 30 (Brad Morkos 2, Kaiden Williams, Jed Stuart, Steven Numambo, Sione Vuki tries, Sione Vuki 3 goals) defeated Parramatta Eels 6 (Larry Mauagututia try, Corey Fenning goal) at Kellyville Park

Don Jr said last week nearly 30 players out with covid protocols, if the Esera boys still live in that shared house that may explain a few things.

There’s no Under 21s City v Country for Flegg players… all SG Ball and Harold Matthews. The Raiders and Thunderbolts the only teams with a bye this week, general bye the following week.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have had a two week break in NSW Cup - after defeating the Parramatta Eels, 30-6, in their last outing. It was a much needed win after thrashings at the hands of the Panthers and the Roosters. With three wins to their name, the Raiders are placed eighth on the competition ladder. This weekend’s opponents, the Rabbitohs are sitting in the cellar - last placed with just win so far this season. Souths are on a four game losing streak. They beat the Dragons, 32-20, in Round 5, but since then they’ve lost to the Sharks, Tigers, Sea Eagles and Knights.

No team in Jersey Flegg has conceded more points than the Raiders in 2022. They have let in 31 points per game, but the Rabbitohs are only slightly better at 30 per game. Of the two teams, Canberra has the better attack (23 points scored per game, Rabbitohs 18). The Rabbitohs have the home ground advantage, but this is a match the Raiders really should win.

These two teams have met twice recently, with the Rabbitohs winning both matches. The Rabbitohs won 28-12 at Crestwood Oval in Round 15 of 2019. Sadly, they then backed up in the 2019 Grand Final, defeating the Raiders, 16-14, at Western Sydney Stadium.

Form: Raiders: WWLLW (3 and 5)
Rabbitohs: WLLLL (1 and 7)

Team news: With Brad Morkos promoted to NSW Cup, Sione Vuki moves back to centre for the Raiders, while Sione Moala takes back the starting halfback spot. The starting forward pack is unchanged, while Jack Bishop comes in on the bench.
