AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders upset the second placed Newtown Jets at Canberra Stadium last Sunday, running out 30-22 winners. The Raiders led 20-4 at half time, after tries to Jordan Martin, Elijah Anderson and a double to centre Semi Valemei. They extended their lead to 26 points at the 55 minute mark, after Anderson got his second and Brad Schneider crossed. But poor defence and game management from the home team saw the Jets make a late comeback, with Newtown scoring three tries in the final 15 minutes. Jets half Luke Metcalf scored double.

As well as producing a double, Valemei ran for 192 metres and posted two line breaks and six tackle breaks. Elijah Anderson (139) and Brad Morkos (130) were the other backs who broke the 100 metre mark with the ball in hand. In the forwards Emre Guler (129), Juwan Compain (127) and Harry Rushton (121) were the top metre eaters. Clay Webb (29), Ata Mariota (29) and Jordan Martin (28) topped the tackle count. Half Brad Schneider produced a try assist and two line break assists.

The Raiders still sit in seventh place on the ladder - and next meet the ladder leading Penrith Panthers at Kippax. The Panthers are coming off back to back losses. They fell to the Knights (36-26) at Maitland Sports Ground in Round 12. They were then defeated by the Dragons (26-22) at Penrith last Friday night. Prior to that, the Panthers had been on a six game winning streak - which included a 44-12 defeat of the Raiders. The Panthers have the best attacking and defensive records in the competition so far this season. The Raiders are not too far behind in terms of attack, but they really need to lift their defensive performances.

Form: Raiders: LWWLW (6 and 5, 7th)
Panthers: WWWLL (9 and 3, 1st)
Attack: Raiders 27, Panthers 31 points scored per game
Defence: Raiders 25, Panthers 15 points conceded per game
Recent meetings: 2022 Round 7 Panthers 44 defeated Raiders 12 at Panthers Stadium
2021 Round 5 Panthers 24 defeated Raiders 10 at Panthers Stadium

Team news: There are some gaps in the Canberra Raiders team that has been named, notably at fullback. Rayden Burns filled the role well last week. Albert Hopoate replaces Semi Valemei at centre, with Valemei named at 18th man in the NRL squad to face the Broncos. Trey Mooney returns in the second row after making his NRL debut against the Roosters, with Clay Webb dropping out. Peter Hola has been added to the bench in place of Josh Baker.

He’s good, very good on the weekend. And his brother Noah is a stand out too. Played Matts this year and is with Erindale. He was brilliant for Erindale in Round 1 of Peter Mulholland Cup.

Probably not a player who I would think is threatening first grade any time soon. He is very versatile. His best position these days is probably back row but he has played centre, wing, 5/8 even this season. He has had a bad run of injuries over the past few years, even in 2020 and 2021 when there was hardly any footy played he did his ACL and broke his jaw. This year he seems to be getting a fair run at it and it is showing with some good performances, but for mine, at this stage, he is that guy in NSW cup that you can put anywhere and he will do a job, whilst those who you are really focused on making first graders do their thing.

The bit of have seen of Noah is that he is a fair player too, but again, not sure he will make the step up.

10th min PENALTY PANTHERS on the goal line. Negated a great kick refusal from Canberra.

TRY PANTHERS to fullback Sunia Turuva. It was their third consecutive red zone set, one the result of a forced drop out, the other the penalty. Converted by halfback Puru.

Raiders kick off to start the second half. Shadows creeping over 80 per cent of the ground now… getting cold. Kippax is an unusual ground in that it runs east-west, with the sun setting directly setting behind one end of the field in winter.

Are east and west different in summer?

I take the point though, it doesn’t run the traditional north/south.

45th min TRY PANTHERS to fullback Sunia Turuva, he has a double. It was a long break for the Burns injury. He’s OK but was stretchered all the way to the sheds, seems to be a leg injury. He’s moving about all OK. Albert Hopoate has taken over at fullback. Converted Puru.
