16 mins to go… TRY RAIDERS to Sam Williams. That’s a double, and that makes the score a bit softer. Croker converts from in front.

I’ve been banging this drum for a while. Crawly has turned him from from a second rower into a modern day lock which is invaluable.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced their first win of the season in Round 3, defeating the Western Suburbs Magpies, 47-24, at Canberra Stadium. It wasn't a game for the defensive purists. With a total of 71 points scored, tackling wasn't at a premium for either side. Lock Harry Rushton and half Sam Williams both scored doubles for the Green Machine, with Canberra crossing for eight tries in all. The Raiders were always in front, but the Magpies kept on responding and kept themselves in touch.

The Raiders were the first to score, a good run from Ryan Sutton setting Harry Rushton on his way to the line inside the first five minutes. The Magpies quickly struck back through a red zone scrum play and hooker Rua Ngatikaura. Canberra centre Brad Morkos scored in corner in the 15th minute, when the Raiders spread it wide from a mid field scrum. The Raiders followed up 10 minutes later, when Harry Rushton stepped his way to the line from close range. In the 32nd minute, it was a little embarrassing for Raiders winger James Schiller when he successfully cleaned up a kick to the corner. But his opposite William Kei stripped the ball one on one, and dived over for an easy four pointer. With three minutes to half time, Raiders half Sam Williams put up a kick to the corner - and the Magpies could not defuse it. Williams received a perfect rebound and raced away to score under the posts. A Williams field goal, scored with just seconds to the siren, gave the home team a 23-12 half time lead.

Questionable goal line defence was the order of the day in the second half, with some easy tries scored from close range. Tries to Adrian Trevilyan, Sam Williams and Trey Mooney kept the Raiders in front. The best was left to last, with Utuloa Asomua making a 20 metre run before setting replacement fullback, Jack Sandford away. All up it was a lovely 90 metre try.

Rushton, Mooney and Sutton impressed in the forwards, while Jarrod Croker made a successful comeback to the field after an off season stem cell procedure for his chronic knee injury - and more recent back spasms. He ran freely in the match and even showed some pace in the kick chasing. He converted seven from eight in the goal kicking department. We did not see much of Xavier Savage in the No. 1, as he was rested in the second half, to allow him to take his place as 18th man in the Raiders' NRL contest.

The Raiders travel to western Sydney in Round 4 to meet the Blacktown Sea Eagles. The Sea Eagles do not play their Round 3 match against the Canterbury Bulldogs until Monday night. The Sea Eagles are yet to win a match this year, having lost to the Panthers in Round 1, 24-4. Last year, the Raiders beat the Sea Eagles, 30-22, at Canberra Stadium. That is the only recent clash between the clubs in this grade.

Team news: Club captain Jarrod Croker has again been named at centre, in an unchanged back line. Ryan Sutton moves to lock, with Peter Hola to take over a starting prop position. Harry Rushton drops out of the team. Joshua James will play his first grade in green. Formerly with the Souths Logan Magpies, the half was the Queensland Maroons Under 18s captain in 2019. Caleb Esera is 18th man.

Gee that Sandford has a lot of pace. No mention of the play of JC or Savage in the summary. JC goal kicking well is a good sign his knees are holding up. Rushton showed a good right foot step. For anyone who watched the game, what was his defence like?

Sandford looked good in the open yesterday, but it isn't something we've seen a lot of in lower grades. Perhaps his pace over short distances isn't his strength and he takes some time to wind up. I'm not sure he's got the attacking game for first grade, but hopefully he develops and proves me wrong on that.

Croker has said his chronic knee problem is no issue for his goal kicking, as he kicks with his other leg. But as I mentioned in the wrap above, he ran freely and showed a big of pace in kick chases.

Defence was not a feature of yesterday's match. It was pretty awful at times. But Rushton has a tackle efficiency rate around 95 per cent in NSW Cup matches so far.

Pace in kick chases is promising for Croker as this was one of his previous big strengths - and also something wildly missing in the first half last night. If that's coming back, that's huge.
And to all the people who doubted me, hello to them as well. - Mark Webber, Raiders Ballboy and Unluckiest F1 Driver Ever

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

He must be injured or ill as he's not named in any team. Given Sebastian Kris is in COVID isolation, it may well be affecting the junior ranks. There are a few names missing down the grades.

He is listed as #24 for the NRL side but unlike the other reserves not listed in NSW cup.

Wondering if he maybe 18/19th man to get him around the game day squad a bit more as he is getting close.

The team put up at 4pm on NRL.com definitely had Rushton at No. 24. But they have Peter Hola listed at 24 (and did by the time I wrote the above). Rushton looked OK in today’s training pics, so not sure what the story is.

Failed a HIA last week. As we have seen, seems to be a situation where failing a HIA means you are ineligible to play NSW cup the following week but if you pass the NRL concussion protocols you are not prevented from playing NRL.

Josh Mitchell at hooker! If that’s the Queanbeyan Blues Josh Mitchell, that’s a long time between pulling on a Raiders jersey! Sam Williams out too.

Adrian Trevilyan is here at Kippax watching SG Ball. Harry Rushton too.

That's unusual.

What would you read into that? Cotton wool for possible FG duties. Wouldn't be at SG Ball if they were isolating. Both have serious FG claims to be pressing right now...

That was my thought - has Ricky decided to play them next week?

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders earn back-to-back wins with victory over Sea Eagles in NSW Cup

Canberra Raiders have prevented a late comeback from Blacktown Sea Eagles in their Round 4 NSW Cup clash, winning 26-18 at HE Laybutt Field.

With the new-look halves pairing of Joshua James and Sione Vuki, the Raiders scored three of five tries on the back of intelligent kicks in behind the Sea Eagles’ defensive line. Canberra fullback Xavier Savage, despite being kept quiet in the first half, had another solid showing. He showed great strength coming out of trouble, busting tackles and using his acceleration effectively.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders defeated the Blacktown Sea Eagles, 26-18, at HE Laybutt Field on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders scored three tries in the first half taking a 14-8 lead to the break. James Schiller got a double, while bench hooker Mitch Souter also crossed. Club co-captain Jarrod Croker scored just six minutes into the second half, while fullback Xavier Savage joined the action 10 minutes later. That saw the Raiders jump out to a 26-8 lead. Blacktown produced two tries in the final quarter of the game - and with five minutes remaining, the gap between the teams had closed to just eight points. But that was all she wrote.

New halfback signing, Joshua Jackson - who was a late replacement for Sam Williams - set the Savage try in motion with a good fifth tackle run. In addition, the kicking of Jackson and halves partner Sione Vuki set up three tries. Josh Mitchell was another surprise late replacement, coming in at starting hooker for Adrian Trevilyan.

The Raiders are in the road again in Round 5, looking for a third straight win. They'll meet the Raiders' former NSW Cup affiliate, Mt Pritchard in Wagga Wagga on Saturday. Mounties are on a three game losing streak, having fallen to the Rabbitohs (18-32), Eels (12-18) and Bulldogs (28-18). The Bulldogs scored 22 unanswered points in the second half in a big comeback victory on Saturday at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

These two teams last met in Round 3 of 2021 at Canberra Stadium, with Mt Pritchard running out 34-10 winners. Semi Valemei and Kai O'Donnell scored the only two tries for the Raiders.

Form: Raiders: LLWW
Mounties: WLLL

Team news: Harry Rushton replaces Ata Mariota at starting prop, while last week's late inclusion at hooker, Josh Mitchell, retains his place. Albert Hopoate has been added to the bench, with Juwan Compain named as 18th man.

Was the signing of Josh James announced? Seems to be a very promising signing. Captained qld u18s at half despite the team also containing Sam walker and Toby sexton. Clearly was seen to have a lot of potential as a youngster, but appears to have been overlooked by the broncos.
