Hola looked strong. Pretty ordinary attack and defence all around though.
Ata Mariota’s #1 fan. Bless his cotton socks.

79th min TRY BEARS to Jacob Preston in the corner. That’s a double for him and that’s the match. The Raiders don’t defuse the bomb, Keighran then loses the ball and it ruled to have been lost back… and Preston picks up the scraps. Keighran converts.

MATCH REPORT: Bears edge out Raiders in an intense clash

The North Sydney Bears proved too strong for the Canberra Raiders in their Round 6 clash on Saturday at North Sydney Oval. Harry Rushton played brilliantly at No.13 not just when he ran the ball, but in linking with his fellow forwards and easing pressure off the Raiders' halves. However, what let the Raiders down was their defence around the ruck.

Hopoate, Hola, Mooney and Rushton looked good. Not sure why Woolford has returned to the club? Frawley had a shocker.

We're so short on hookers that we've been playing Queanbeyan Blues hooker Josh Mitchell. Hodgson gone, Adrian Trevilyan injured, Toby Thorburn injured.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a 28-22 loss to the Bears at North Sydney Oval on Saturday. The Raiders certainly had enough territory and possession to win, but the red zone attack too often looked blunt. At other times, errors and poor discipline proved costly.

Former Raiders junior, hooker Zac Woolford was a surprise late inclusion on the bench for Canberra - as was former Manly forward Zac Saddler. Woolford played the first five rounds this year with the Newtown Jets, while Saddler has impressed with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the Canberra Raiders Cup in 2022.

The Raiders started poorly, with Sam Williams' kick off going out on the full. But Canberra quickly recovered, with a Jarrod Croker run to the corner producing four points in just the third minute. In the 20th minute, the Bears finally took advantage of a flow of Raiders' turnovers, with winger Tom Carr crossing out wide. The Adam Keighran conversion gave the home team a 6-4 lead.

Seven minutes later, the Bears extended their lead, with lock Renouf Atoni able to ground the ball under the posts, despite attempted tackles from Saddler and Clay Webb. The Raiders gave up the length of the field in one set before the Atoni try. From the restart, the Bears did exactly the same thing - putting Tom Carr over in the corner for a double. That gave the Bears a 12 point lead.

However, with three minutes to the break, a try to Raiders forward Trey Mooney kept the Raiders in touch. Mooney just charged at the line - and for a moment, it looked like he'd been held up, in goal. But he somehow got his arm free of the tacklers and planted the ball. The Raiders went to half time trailing, 16-10.

In the 49th minute, quick passing from Harry Rushton and Sam Williams set Canberra forward, Hudson Young on a wide, barnstorming run to the try line. The Raiders took the lead in the 60th minute, when a perfect kick to the corner from Sam Williams was chased down by winger Michael Asomua. Jarrod Croker could not convert, but Canberra had taken a 20-16 lead.

Canberra squandered plenty of opportunity in the first 20 minutes of the second half - with too much in the way of crash balls and one out running. And that came back to bite the Green Machine.

In the 67th minute, Raiders fullback Sebastian Kris knocked on a bomb close to Canberra's own goal line. Bears centre Adam Keighran ran through, and had given up on the ball. He smashed Kris, and there was certainly high contact. Kris went off for an HIA, but the contact was ruled to be accidental by the officials. That gave the Bears chance in the Raiders' 20 metre zone, and they quickly took advantage - with second rower Jacob Preston getting to the try line, despite the attentions of Matt Frawley and Clay Webb. The Keighran conversion saw the Bears take a two point lead.

With four minutes remaining, Bears half Ronald Volkman kicked the ball out on the full, gifting Canberra another red zone chance. But Canberra's attack again looked disorganised, and they failed to get a repeat set. The Bears promptly took the ball to the other end of the field. The last bomb of the match was gathered in by Adam Keighran on the full. While the ball went loose when Keighran hit the ground, it was ruled to have been knocked back. Jacob Preston was on hand to pick up the crumbs and get a double out wide. Keighran couldn't convert, but the Bears had already secured a 28-20 victory.

With five wins, the Bears are still undefeated this season. The Raiders sit in the bottom half of the ladder, with just three wins.

Harry Rushton topped the running metres among the Raiders forwards, clocking up a total of 159 from 15 runs and 81 post contact metres. Hudson Young (148), Zac Saddler (130) and Trey Mooney (100) also broke 100 metres gained in the pack. Rushton (47) and Mooney (42) topped the tackle count, while Mooney posted five tackle breaks. Utuloa Asomusa (170) and Albert Hopoate (145) bettered 100 running metres in the backs. Sam Williams got two line break assists and three try assists.

Canberra will meet the Panthers at Penrith next Sunday in Round 7. The Panthers are coming off a 42-16 win over Mounties at Belmore. They've lost just one game all year - a 20-18 home ground defeat in Round 4 at the hands of the Rabbitohs. The Panthers have put up some big scores, breaking the 50 point barrier once and posting 40 or more points twice. These two teams have met once in recent years, with the Panthers getting a 24-10 win in Round 5 2021 at Penrith. Sam Williams got two line break assists and three try assists.

Form: Raiders: LWWWL
Panthers: WWLWW

Team news: Albert Hopoate replaces Sebastian Kris at fullback, with Kris suffering a head knock late in last week's match. James Schiller comes in on the wing. Emre Guler takes over at starting prop, with Peter Hola moving to lock. Harry Rushton has been promoted to the NRL team, and will make his first grade debut. Loghan Lewis and Juwan Compain have been included on the bench.

Went to the game yesterday. Came away thinking Rushton, Mooney and Hola would all be worth consideration for the top 17. None of them were outstanding but considering they would replacing the likes of Guler, they won't have to be. Hudson Young was solid but we've see what he has to offer. Rushton has a bit of ball playing in him which we are sadly lacking. Rushton to 13, Sutton to front row rotation and Guler to NSW Cup to play a minimum of 60 minutes would be my choice.

Seb Kris went pretty well at fullback , before getting smashed late in the game after dropping a high ball (sound familiar). Not much on offer from the backs (Schiller didn't play). Croker scored a try but didn't do much else. Hopoate was ok.

Good to see Sia Soliola at the game.

Good feedback. I’m very keen for Ruston, Mooney needs more time IMO.

Don’t tell me Seb Kris dropped the ball getting his hands in the wrong position to make the catch. Who was his technique coach in juniors? Screech from Saved By The Bell?

Why was Mooney converted to an edge, and Harry to a middle, when both had talent at their original spots?

Now, Harry has proved to be a "footballer", so maybe that works out. But still seems odd.

MATCH REPORT: Penrith Panthers produce big win over Canberra Raiders in NSW Cup

Penrith Panthers dominated in Round 7 of the NSW Cup, thrashing Canberra Raiders 44-12 on Sunday at Penrith Stadium.

Panthers halves Sean O’Sullivan and Kurt Falls were impressive in attack, while winger Thomas Jenkins bagged two tries to help the home side to a 32-point triumph.

Panthers ease past Raiders for third straight win

The Penrith Panthers reinforced their NSW Cup premiership credentials with a relentless performance at Penrith Stadium to beat Canberra Raiders 44-12 in Round Seven.

Canberra's halves pairing of Sam Williams and Joshua James struggled to gel against a strong Penrith outfit. Despite Penrith’s early dominance, Canberra still found themselves with multiple attacking opportunities in the first 20 minutes, but in a reflection of the Raiders’ afternoon they were unable to convert on several last-tackle plays.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a heavy 44-12 loss to the Panthers at Penrith Stadium on Sunday. The Panthers led 28-0 at half time and went on to score a total of eight tries. It took almost 60 minutes for the Raiders to score - with Jarrod Croker turning back the clock and gathering in a Sam Williams bomb to the try line on the full. Peter Hola got a consolation try in the 77th minute - with Zac Woolford giving him a crash ball from dummy half, close to the line. Apart from that, there was not a lot of joy for the Raiders.

The Raiders completed at just 70 per cent (Panthers 84 per cent) and that gave Penrith a 53 per cent share of possession. The Panthers made 400 more running metres than the Raiders - and made eight line breaks (Raiders one). The Raiders missed 30 tackles (Panthers 21). Albert Hopoate made 162 running metres from fullback, while Emre Guler produced 157 metres gained. They were the only two players to break the 100 metre mark. James Schiller (97) and Ata Mariota (94) came close. Trey Mooney topped the tackle count (40), while producing three offloads and 84 running metres from 10 runs. Emre Guler also posted 35 tackles.

The Raiders are on the road again in Round 8 - and will travel to Kellyville in Sydney's north west for a clash with the Parramatta Eels on Sunday. The Eels are coming off a 26-8 win over the Newcastle Knights on Sunday at Hunter Stadium - a match in which winger Matthew Komolafe picked up a hat trick. The Eels are sitting in fourth place on the ladder, with a 5 and 2 record so far. The Raiders have had back to back losses - and will be desperate to turn their form around. But this certainly won't be an easy match in which to do that. The Eels have the better attack (29 points scored per match, Raiders 24) - but have a decided advantage in defence. The Raiders have conceded an average of 31 points per game so far this season - the Eels just 15.

These two teams have met twice recently. The Raiders produced a 30-22 win in Round 6 last year, with Corey Harawira-Naera bagging a double at Canberra Stadium. The Eels got some revenge a month later, winning 26-24 at Ringrose Park. It was five tries apiece, with both Xavier Savage and Manase Kaho scoring two tries. But it was former Raider Michael Oldfield who scored the winning try, with a minute left on the clock.

Form: Raiders: WWWLL (3 and 4)
Eels: WWLWW (5 and 2)

Team news: Sebastian Kris returns from a head knock at fullback, with Albert Hopoate moving from fullback to wing. Michael Asomua is out, with James Schiller switching wings to take the No. 2 jersey. Harry Rushton has been named at lock, after making his NRL debut last week. Peter Hola drops to the bench, with Jordan Martin also added to the interchange list. Last week's benchies, Loghan Lewis and Mitch Spencer, drop out of the team.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders keep in touch with leaders

2 MINUTE READ

The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup team has kept themselves in touch with the top six teams, with a 28-4 victory over the Parramatta Eels at Kellyville Park on Sunday afternoon.

It was the Raiders fourth win of the season - and a much needed one, after a big, 44-12 defeat by the Panthers at Penrith last weekend. Canberra has held onto seventh place on the ladder.

The Raiders were bolstered by the late addition of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad at fullback - after he was left idle on the bench in Saturday's NRL clash with the Warriors. CNK's inclusion saw Sebastian Kris shift into the centres. Matt Frawley also made a late switch from hooker to halfback, with Zac Woolford starting at dummy half and Sam Williams dropping to the bench. Peter Hola started at lock, after Harry Rushton was called into the Raiders NRL team to replace an injured Elliott Whitehead.

Albert Hopoate scored the two opening tries for the Green Machine, the first in the 15th minute, after a break from Ata Mariota up the middle. Hopoate was on the end of a shift to the left on the last tackle, with Nicoll-Klokstad getting the try assist. Jarrod Croker converted from the sideline. Croker set up the second Hopoate try six minutes later, after drawing the defence and throwing a great pass to his winger. Croker was again in the action near the 30 minute mark, chasing a Frawley kick to the in goal and grounding the ball. The Raiders were well in control at half time, leading 18-0.

It was a bit of an arm wrestle in the second half, with the Eels taking until the 60th minute to score their first try. After repeat sets in the Raiders' 20 metre zone, centre Samuel Loizou crossed in the corner. However, it was the Raiders who came home the stronger. With 12 minutes to go, James Schiller took a huge cut out pass from Nicoll-Klokstad and got around his opposite winger for a try, . Second rower Trey Mooney charged over beside the posts in the 75th minute to wrap up the victory.

Albert Hopoate (181) topped the running metres gained, while Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad contributed 141 metres gained and 63 post contact metres from fullback. All of the back five broke 100 metres gained, with the exception of Jarrod Croker. Among the forwards, Trey Mooney (167), Peter Hola (145), Ata Mariota (134) and Juwan Compain (101) all ran for more than 100 metres with the ball in hand. Clay Webb (44) topped the tackle count, with Trey Mooney (42) and Emre Guler (41) not far behind.

Nicoll-Klokstad got two try assists, while Matt Frawley, Croker and Sam Williams all posted one. Williams played just 10 minutes off the bench, so it looks like he was saved for first grade this week - in light of Jack Wighton's suspension.

The Raiders have byes in the next two weeks, with the Rabbitohs to be their next opponents in Round 11 at Dubbo.

AT A GLANCE

Canberra Raiders (Albert Hopoate 2, Jarrod Croker, James Schiller, Trey Mooney tries, Jarrod Croker 4 goals) defeated Parramatta Eels (Samuel Loizou try) at Kellyville Park

Trip to Dubbo for Canberra Raiders NSW Cup team is off

Plans to take a NSW Cup match between the Rabbitohs and the Raiders to Dubbo on May 22 have been abandoned. The match was supposed to be a curtain raiser to the NRL clash between the clubs, but it has been shifted to Redfern Oval.

Both clubs received an email last week from the NSWRL last week with news that the trip had been cancelled owing to funding restraints - with the NRL halting payments to the body over an administrative dispute.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have had a two week break in NSW Cup, after defeating the Parramatta Eels, 28-4, in Round 8. The win meant the Raiders kept in touch with the top teams, but they sit in seventh place on the ladder. The Raiders were set to travel to Dubbo in Round 11, for a meeting with the Rabbitohs - but the NSWRL has transferred the game to Redfern. The Rabbitohs hold fourth place on the ladder, level with the Bulldogs on competition points. They’re on a four game winning streak, beating the Knights, 37-14, in their last outing. On home turf, Souths will be very tough opponents for the Raiders. The Rabbitohs have the better attacking record (27 points scored per game, Raiders 24). But their defensive advantage is even more pronounced. The Rabbitohs have conceded just 17 points per game, the Raiders a whopping 27.

These two teams have met once recently, with the Rabbitohs winning, 26-22, at Kippax. Sam Williams scored a double, but the Rabbitohs out scored the Raiders, five tries to four.

Form: Raiders: WWLLW (4 and 4)
Rabbitohs: LWWWW (6 and 3)

Team news: James Schiller takes over the No. 1 jersey for the Raiders, while Sam Williams and Joshua James will steer the team around in the halves. Adrian Trevilyan is back from a long spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, and will start at hooker.

Kick off time changed to 11:30am for Saturday’s match against the Rabbitohs. Presumably to give some players time to travel to Dubbo.

Possibly, but certainly won’t be starting. Probably 18th man at best.
