Canberra Raiders shake up coaching structure

Post by greeneyed »

Ricky Stuart reacts to Canberra Raiders' poor season

Ricky Stuart has reacted to the disappointment of Canberra’s failure to make the NRL finals by bringing back Mick Crawley as pathways manager and attacking coach. Jeremy Hickmans, who worked under Wayne Bennett in his last stint at the Broncos, is also joining the Raiders as head of high performance.

"The results this year are unacceptable and there’s no other way of looking at it," Stuart said. "In three years we’ve gone from a grand final, to a preliminary final to missing the eight. I thought this transitional phase was going to happen in 12 months but we’ve brought it forward. It will reinvigorate our whole football structure.”

Great news that we have Mick Crawley as our attacking coach.

Now we need some good cattle.

Definitely a step in the right direction with these hirings. Especially like that we’ve picked up what seems to be Wayne’s right hand man. Wayne has proven time and time again he can create success wherever he goes so you’d think a lot of Wayne has rubbed off on Hickman over those 13 odd years.

Exactly. It doesn’t matter who the attacking coach is at this point. The biggest problem is staring Rick in the mirror!

Thank **** that Stuart has realised someone else needs to be coaching this attack. I had faith that he would, but not immediately after this failure of a season.

Two very good steps in the right direction - and possibly the two most important.

If Crawley can work his magic with a reinvigorated backline including Savage, Timoko, HSS, CNK, Rapana, Wighton and halfback signing next year might not be miserable after all.

I have to add - a real crying **** shame we don't have George Williams anymore. Pisses me off. Our situation would be looking so much better alongside this news.

You just know that if we still had G.Will we probably would have scraped into the finals with 11 wins and this season would have been lauded as a success…and Ricky would have continued taking the reins as attacking coach; and we would never have tried to re-hire Crawley.

Agreed. He's not a well liked man here anymore thanks to the nature of his departure
And his fit with George wasn't perfect but i'd have liked to see him in this footy team if Crawley/Crowley was given the reigns proper. Think he could have helped unlock somethings in his game

So Ricky concedes that what he did this year didn’t work and reverts back to what nearly worked a couple of years ago in a different style of game. Ok - let’s see…

I have to say, if we get Fogarty and Peachey, combined with what Crawley does to an offence, that’s a side that can play a successful style of V’landysball.

Full marks to Sticky for identifying that 2021 was a disaster for the Raiders and change was required. He cops a fair bit for being stubborn and not making change but I see the return of Mick Crawley as a real positive. Just on Mick Crawley, I wonder if he has spotted any Q Cup players who he thinks could have a future in NRL football.

I agree Red. The stubborn people are those that fail to see that Ricky isn't the same coach he was 10 years ago. Bringing Crawley back is exactly just what the doctor ordered. Whether it immediately turns out attack around is difficult to say but kudos to the club for going in a different direction. All I ask from the club is they don't accept mediocrity and sticky doesn't. Re. Crawley sighting players from Qld cup I am certain he will bring insights with him. Lets not forget he helped get Starling across the line for us.

It’s good to see that he change recognise failure and change direction between seasons.

I’d like to see it mid-season, or even mid-game though. This year was a write off from very early on. There was plenty of time to shake things up and try something different. I’m sick of these seasons (2015, 2017, 2018, 2021) where Ricky locks a plan and rides it into the ground, never acknowledging obvious problems until the end of the season.

- Be willing to adapt on the fly.
- Take some back up plans into matches and modify if the conditions or events require it.
- Give some consideration to your opponents instead of insisting if you focus on your plan then everything will work out.

Good news.

We really need a good 7 to make it work though.
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Yep, great to see the need to refresh the place has been recognised. Crawley did well with attack last time he was here and the other bloke has a decent resume.

Just need to sign a halfback...

There must be a good relationship between Crawley and the Raiders. How many times has he gone and came back now? I feel like this is at least his third return.

You can assemble a team of the world’s best dairy farmers, but if you give them 3 donkeys, a 2 legged dog and a possum they aren’t producing any milk for you! This is good news we are trying to get the leadership right but we also need the cattle! Sign a good 7 and stop signing old men and slow wingers to long term deals!
