29th min TRY RAIDERS to back rower Jed Reardon under the posts. Alaia puts him in a gap down the middle and it’s a great run from the son of former Bulldogs player Steve Reardon. Good quick play the ball from Siamani Leuluai. Sam Gash converts.

Canberra Raiders 12
Penrith Panthers 6

HALF TIME

That try is a huge bonus, as the Panthers have had almost all the territory for a good 20 minutes.

RAIDERS 24-18

FULL TIME

The Raiders go through to the Grand Final qualifier. They now meet the minor premiers, the Western Suburbs Magpies.

They won’t to repeat the helter skelter finish next week! Noah Martin and Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi were immense, both dummy halves were busy and smart. Martin the man of the match for mine.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews team will play in a Grand Final qualifier, after defeating the Penrith Panthers, 24-18, at Ringrose Park on Saturday afternoon.

In a helter skelter finish, the Panthers scored two tries in the final five minutes of the game - but that was not enough for the team that were placed third on the competition ladder at the end of the regular season.

The Raiders were first to score, with a cross field run and an offload from hooker Xavier Cacciotti setting Josh Papalii lookalike, Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi up for four points. The conversion to Sam Gash gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead after just five minutes. The Panthers struck back in the 10th minute, when prop Tana Papu burrowed his way across the line under the posts. That levelled the scoreline - and from that point, the Panthers began to dominate possession and territory. Somehow, the Raiders were able to hold their line.

In the 29th minute, the Raiders finally got their chance. A quick play the ball from Siamani Leuluai and quick service from dummy half, Ethan Alaia, sent back rower Jed Reardon on a long run down the middle of the field. It ended with him planting the ball under the posts, delivering an unlikely 12-6 lead for Canberra at the break.

The Raiders started the second half with their tails up, while the Panthers started to make plenty of errors. In the 40th minute, second rower Noah Martin took a quick tap, his damaging run almost setting up Alaia for a try. He was held up over the line, but lock forward and captain Owen Hromow crossed soon after. Martin barged his way over from close range for his own try in the 48th minute. That produced a 24-6 lead for the Green Machine - and they seemed well in control.

In the 56th minute, the Panthers finally put their attack together. Penrith centre John-Paul Donevski produced a big break down the Panthers' left edge, putting winger Casey McLean in for a try. And when the Raiders' kick off went awry - going out on the full in the corner, Penrith was gifted one last chance. Panthers half Billy Thompson scored with 20 seconds left on the clock - but by then it was all too late.

The Raiders will now meet the minor premiers, the Western Suburbs Magpies, in Week 2 of the finals. The winner will qualify for the premiership decider against either the Roosters or Sharks. In this week's other elimination final, the Sharks defeated the Eels, 28-4.

The Raiders were the wooden spooners in this grade last year and did not win a game. So these are exciting times. It is a tough ask for Canberra to now make the Grand Final. The Magpies were undefeated in the regular season. However, they have only played two of the top six teams so far. In Round 4, they beat the Sydney Roosters, 30-26, in a game that effectively decided the minor premiership. They also beat the Eels, by just two points (12-10) in Round 3. The Magpies are beatable. It should be a great contest.

Team news: In the only change to the Raiders' team, Ethan Alaia will start at hooker, with Xavier Cacciotti dropping to the bench.

Player to watch: Harold Matthews Cup

Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi (Prop)– Canberra Raiders

Has been a commanding presence for the Raiders this season with his absence noticed when he missed a few weeks with a knee injury. Canberra’s upset win against the Panthers on Good Friday was built off the foundations laid by the No.8 from Perth who clearly goes to the same barber as the club’s first grade star Josh Papalii. The Daily Telegraph will live stream the Raiders and Magpies semi final.

Canberra Raiders one step away from a Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews Cup team will meet the Western Suburbs Magpies on Saturday to play for a place in next week’s grand final. Two players - Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi and Jack Clutterbuck - have relocated from Perth to play, while others are commuting from places like Leeton, Griffith, Wagga and the South Coast to train and play.

“We have two or three players in our side that travel from Griffith and Leeton, to and from training twice a week,” Raiders Pathways and Performance Manager, Dean Souter said. “They train for two and a half hours and they’ve got to travel nine hours to get to training and back."
