Jarrod Croker could get all clear for Round 1 after shoulder surgery

Jarrod Croker to miss start of 2021 season with shoulder injury

Jarrod Croker played his final game this year with a shoulder injury that has ruled him out for up to five months — an act of bravery Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has described as unbelievable. The Raiders will be without their captain for at least the first four rounds of next season with Croker requiring major off-season shoulder surgery.

According to Stuart, Croker suffered a ruptured rotator cuff and torn labrum (cartilage) just five minutes into the Raiders’ season-ending 30-10 preliminary final loss to eventual premiers Melbourne a fortnight ago.

Canberra Raiders captain Jarrod Croker set to miss start of 2021 NRL season

Raiders captain Jarrod Croker underwent shoulder surgery on Tuesday that could force him to miss at least the first four rounds of next year. It means the Raiders will be without their mainstay at left centre and also their goal kicker when round one kicks off next year.

‘Unbelievably courageous’ Raiders skipper to miss start of 2021 with shoulder injury

Raiders captain Jarrod Croker will miss the opening rounds of next season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

“It’s typical of Jarrod that nothing was said about it after the match or until now and he did the injury in the first five minutes of the final. It was unbelievably courageous that he could play on with it. Incredible really.”

According to the story, Croker underwent delicate “bony Bankart lesion” surgery on Tuesday, Rapana has had a similar injury previously. Five months rehab minimum. Return Rd 4-6.

This explains his performance against Melbourne. Very brave from the skipper although Stuart and his medical staff should have had him off if he was so affected.

Interesting to see not only who it is that replaces him in the side but who is going to be the goal kicker in his absence

Did anyone see how he injured his shoulder?

It couldn’t have been from using it in tackles the past decade

Might have helped if we'd had a centre out there who could put his shoulder into a tackle Toots... (and Ricky)

That explains his poor play though. I wonder what round he did it in.

Gives a nice window for Timoko or HSS to audition in (does Timoko have a side preference?) And even juicier they'll be auditioning in the very same games as Scott plays - assuming he's a dead cert for one centre spot now. So the best performing might just stay in...

Timoko played on the right in the 2019 Jersey Flegg team, HSS on the left.

Goal kicker will be interesting. I expect Simo to play and take the reins.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sticky plays Rapana there, with Scott on the right and Valemei the other winger.

I hope not but I also could see him doing it. It depends a lot on trial form so let’s hope two of Timoko/HSS/Scott stand up.

I tell you what this probably saves Scott a little I think.

Ideally HSS plays there with Timoko on the right. Unfortunately, that's probably a little too far-fetched for Stick at this stage, what with the lack of experience there'd be in a backline with them.

It would be a courageous move, although one I would agree with. Rapana on one wing provides good experience and Simonnson is pretty solid as well.

Heroic yes, maybe cost us a chance at the win, no involvement in the storm game, poor defence.
I'm keen to see a Harley Smith shields and timoko centre pairing come round 1 2021.. exciting times... and croker may have to come back via the bench. Maybe at 14.
And Wighton or George will kick, or Rapana or simmo and then Elliot.. probably

He has kicked goals for Wigan, but wasn't their regular goal kicker. 69 goals over seven seasons.

Some posters appeared to be almost happy about one of our own player's injuries. It's unacceptable. Completely unacceptable. And we won't have it on this site.

You're a good egg GE

That's pretty hopeless. When I watch games with my kids I help them to empathise when opposition players go down injured. We are all humans after all.

My kids get it. And they are 9 and 10 years of age.

Papa for goal kicking! Ricky reckons he is a great goal kicker and was sorry for Papa when he miffed his only attempt in his 200th game. True.

Bad news for JC, I hope the surgery is a success. On possible team changes, I recall Valemei as a center in lower grades. Perhaps Simmonson and Rapa on the wings with Valemei, Timoko, Scott and HSS competing for spots in the centers. Pre-season will be interesting with all players competing for a spot in the backline and I reckon dusting off the goal kicking boots to try to get an edge for FG selection.

If Seb Kris makes it back he is also a possibility at right center. GE has Andre Niko left the club? From a goal kicking point of view he was good in lower grades.

Contract expired this year... unless he can get another development contract... but unlikely.

If the posts that have been left in are any guide to what you've deleted, it just reinforces my opinion that are a lot of trash posters on this forum with NFI. Hope Toots recovers well and we see him back in his place soon as possible.

Courageous.. hat off to him.

I hope we play a natural centre round 1 and back whoever we play there. No point having a "fill in", we need to have a longer term view on this position and its the perfect time to get this process started.

Shows lack of maturity.

Croker will go down as a club legend. I think constructive perspectives are fine and interesting.

But to be disrespectful is not cool.

If this is an excuse for Rapa to be our starting centre come Rd 1 in 2021 I'll be furious.

HSS to be auditioning for a long term role in those opening few rounds. Big chance to put our fears of a lack of backline talent to rest.

Scott vs Timoko for the right.

Really bad news for Croker. 2021 is shaping up as a pretty critical year for him and without a pre season under his belt, he's behind the eight ball already.

Thanks GE. I have not seen much goal kicking from the potential FG 17. Perhaps a call to a specialist goal kicking coach will be part of our pre-season for the coming year. It is a vital part of the game particularly in the tight contests.
