Idea for post game discussion

Post by afgtnk »

Hi GE and team - I want to propose something small please before the new season.

Issue:

I've noticed (last year especially) that immediately after a Raiders game the forum naturally has a lot of posters logged in, but that doesn't seem to be reflected in post activity on the main board. On the couple other forums I'm a part of (non RL) the boards seems to be at their very busiest right after a game with posts about the outcome. To me it seems this could be from a lack of distinction between in-match and post-match, as there currently isn't a specific place to post thoughts about the game and review, which I'm sure many on here would love to do including me.

Solution:

If the 'teams and previews' thread could possibly be locked and then a post-game thread opened as soon as the final whistle sounds, that way conversation about the game and the result are both started and filtered straight into a new thread. It creates a clear cut off point and people would be less inclined to carry on from in game ramblings, and automatically inclined to talk about what they just witnessed. Conversation would naturally build as the posts keep going on.

I feel at the moment there are many like me that may be wanting to talk about the outcome of the game in more detail after completion, but holding off instead because not many others are. I think it also make sense in terms of having a seperate place for the match reports that come out, press conferences, etc and not having to trawl through to find those as well as comments at the end of a game.

Let me know what you think - I'm happy to open the threads if you need, if a mod/admin can lock the game thread.

We used to have a separate post match thread... but people told us that there were too many threads per game. So we have Teams and Previews, which is supposed to go up to Game Day. And then Game Day is supposed to cover the match and post match. In fact, we used to call that thread "Game Day and Post Match".

I'm happy to take views on the best thing to do, of course. We could lock the Teams and Previews thread on the morning of game day? Happy to do the thing that suits people best.

I’m happy with how it is now, but what about merging Teams and Previews with Gameday?

Would it help if the proposed post match thread wasn't stickied? On other forums I'm part of this seems to work well as it's situated in the main body of the board, instead of stickied up top which could make it too cluttered.

I don't think you'd be in danger of it dropping too low on the page as there generally aren't many new threads that pop up on the main board after a game. I'd agree that you'd be better off with seperate threads for pre-game and game day/in-game, but merging the first two could possible work.

Personally, I think it is good to separate them... as per the original post which suggests compartmenting stuff helps sort things. The other thing is that the Facebook algorithm closes down the distribution of our shared posts, if we use one thread too much. A couple of threads means we get distributed more broadly in Facebook news feeds.

It is very hard for us to compartmentalise Game Day discussion in my view... We will, for example, post a full time result on all our other social media platforms. These posts are some of the most clicked and widely liked and shared posts of the week. This drives people to the site. If they arrive to find that the Game Day thread is locked, with another thread started up... it sort of defeats the promotion of the site and discussion of the post game.

It isn't so much the issue of stickying or not... the issue I see is that I can't easily drive people from our other social media platforms to the site, if we start a "new" thread at the conclusion of the game. I'm mostly actually at games when I do this... and it has to be done very quickly. People are instantly discussing the result. To be honest, I think it is pretty difficult to have an in game and then a post game thread, while promoting traffic to the site. People want to discuss the game straight away.

The other issue is... no one actually posts match reports, highlights videos etc but me after a game. There is a specific place to post this material... in the Game Day thread... but I'm the only person who does it.

Definitely - in the examples I've referred to the game thread is closed and post match is generally opened within 30 secs to 1 minute tops of the full time whistle. People want a place to discuss the outcome immediately and generally the board have a couple thousand users on after a game.

Alternatively, if it were to be mod/admin controlled could you have a locked post match thread ready to go and unlock it as soon as the game is done? That way you've already got the link for social media.

RE putting up the post game material - would hope that it helps to make it more beneficial for the effort you put in to do it (clearer access).

You're implying a mod or admin is ready to go at the siren

Speaking from experience its impossible to keep up with the game and the threads, and basically zero if you physically attend

No doubt it'd be harder if you attend, but I'd like to there's at least one available to do it. Ideally you'd have an interstate non-attending mod/admin look after it when attending ones can't.

Re: Idea for post game discussion

Just to explain what I do at a game... I'm updating with live scores and comments. I post the full time result. Then I immediately need to get the game result onto social media... with as little delay as possible. I'm writing the posts with the result in draft as the game unfolds, with the pre-prepared art work that accompanies it. I need a link to the site with the full time result... so I have to then put that link into Hootsuite (the software program we use to distribute to out Twitter and Facebook pages and to Instagram) once the game is over. Speed is critical. Just to be clear... I'm doing all this on iPad... not a laptop, at a desk.

For the main Facebook, Twitter and Instagram outlets, I need to instantly produce game specific artwork that includes the result... and then post those with the links back to the site. That game specific art work produces the best responses on our other social media platforms.

I then put a link to the NRL.com match report in the final result post on the site.

Then I pack up and go to set up The Greenhouse Live broadcast... and we do The Greenhouse Live for half an hour, three quarters of an hour.

As soon as the full time siren goes... it is pretty busy.

Then I go home and I post all the match reports, video highlights, press conferences etc. And share all that on social media.

I'm not complaining... I love doing it. I love the site and producing all this stuff... but there's a limit to how many more steps I can add in the time available. I'm just posting this so people understand what it takes to manage the site and all its platforms.

But even if I could add the extra steps... we would have some of the most popular posts on our social media of the week (the game result) driving back to a thread that is closed. In addition, I think it is just about impossible to close comments on the Game Day thread at that point... because people have been watching the game, commenting on the game as it unfolds... and then as the game is completed, we close the thread?

To be honest, the more I think about it, the more impracticable I think it is... I would need administrators on hand at the end of every single game organising it, in addition to me at the games... and we just don't have that capability.

Unfortunately, they're also at the game... or they're unavailable to do it consistently, every single week.

You absolutely do a huge amount of work on everything associated with the website, and have done for ages. Believe me it is appreciated.

I'm not fussed about the means - all I'd like to see and contribute to is more posts talking about the outcome of the game and a clear place to house that for everyone. Do you also think it'd be great if there was more posting activity after the game and about the game? It just seems odd that a lot of people are logged in at the time but there's not as much talk about the result, also given you've mentioned that people are being directed from social media.

If no mods/admin are able to should I test the waters and just create a thread myself to see how it goes, and you guys leave the rest as is?

Are you talking about members of the site who aren't posting... or people viewing the site?

Remember, we have about 40,000 followers on Facebook... and we have 3629 members of thegh.com.au. That is not to mention the followers on Twitter and Instagram... which also exceed the membership of our home site. One interesting thing about The Greenhouse these days is that we have a huge community (over 60,000), but less than 4,000 are members of thegh.com.au.

I think it'd be a bit of a mess if there were more than one thread talking about the post game, to be honest.

Maybe the other alternative is for people to jump in and start posting links to match reports, the NRL on NIne YouTube highlights and press conferences etc etc? That might actually encourage more people to post as well? I'd love to see more of that every day, to be honest. There are a few people who post links to stories and news, but I'd love to see more of it.

Anyway, I've said enough for one night, and explained how things work in practice... over to others for their comments.

Yeah talking about members logged in but not posting.

I don't think posting stuff like videos and reports spur conversation, although I think it's great you do so and would be very handy to members (personally think to make most of the effort put in, having it edited in on the first page of the thread would be more effective, that way it's consisently simpler to find than going to the source website).

I'd also like to hear others views but at least to me it's clear that a continuation of the game thread is mainly what blocks talk about the game once it's done, which a specific post game thread could solve (and possibly be an easy barrier breaker for newbies/lurkers).

Idea for post game discussion

Post by greeneyed »

Papabear opened a thread this week called Round 1 review, which I left. There’s only one post in it though. If people want to open one up like that every week, please go ahead. Would be good to keep it to one per game. Might need a better title... and might make sense to make it consistent with the other game threads.

For the reasons I outlined, I’m going to stick to Teams and Previews and Game Day threads though. For one thing, it’s best to have that distinction for the purposes of the Facebook algorithm. It’s also not practical for me to open a Post Match thread on the day, given all the other things I am doing on game day.

We could open a 'Post Game Arguments with Pigman' thread. Those are usually what keeps Gameday threads going for the rest of the week.

I vote against alphabet’s idea. Stuffed if I want to change threads to continue my argument with pigman, or worse spread it over two threads because full time happens.

What we could do is lock the thread part way through an argument with Pigman. Just make sure the last post is a counter to his and it's riddled with holes.
