AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup side suffered their first loss of the season in Round 3, defeated 22-14 by the Wests Tigers. It was a closely fought match, with the Raiders leading 6-4 at half time. A try to Canberra's Valasi Asomua in the 53rd minute put the home team right back in the match, but a try to Tigers fullback Jessica Whelan in the final two minutes sealed it for the western Sydney outfit.
This week, it is a battle between second and third on the ladder when the Raiders face the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy. Both teams have posted two wins so far. The Roosters had a big 30-0 win over the Parramatta Eels in Round 2 and came away with a 14-10 win over the Penrith Panthers last week. The Roosters won just once last year, but the shift to 13 a side football might just be suiting them. The Raiders defeated the Indigenous Academy team 22-16 last year - while the Roosters won the only other encounter in 2018, 42-28.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews team had a bye in Round 3, and head into a clash with the 10th placed Sydney Roosters this week at Henson Park. Both teams have posted one win and one loss this year. The Raiders defeated the St George Dragons, 20-8, in their last outing, while the Roosters are coming off a 24-10 loss to the Parramatta Eels. Given the Raiders also lost to the Eels in Round 1 (14-4) we might see a close contest in this one. These teams have faced each other just twice in the past five years, with the Raiders winning way back in 2015, and the Roosters victorious in Round 4 of 2018, 16-14.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders remain undefeated after the first three rounds and stand alone on top of the SG Ball ladder. They produced a 36-24 victory over the Victoria Thunderbolts, but only really got on top of the Melbourne Storm junior outfit in the final 15 minutes - with a Victorian player in the sin bin for a professional foul.
The Thunderbolts were the first to score when No. 9, Tui Ieremia split the Raiders up the middle in the very first minute, offloading to fullback Sualauvi Faalogo. Canberra hit back in the 11th minute, with Caleb Esera making an impressive break to send half Connor Williams in under the posts. Further tries to Brown Kuresa and Junior Tupou gave the Raiders an 18-6 lead after 25 minutes.
But poor defence let the Thunderbolts charge back into the game. Tries to the Thunderbolts' wingers Lene Feterika and Imila Mataafa saw the Victorian outfit trail by just four points, 18-14, at the break. Then in the 41st minute, Feterika escaped the in goal, offloading to centre Sione Finau for a 100 metre Thunderbolts try. That gave the visitors a 20-18 lead. Raiders tries to Caleb Esera, Jack Williams and Livai Kaloutolu inside the final 15 minutes delivered the victory. A second try to the Thunderbolt's Sione Finau in the final minute of the match underlined the need for the Raiders to be working on their defence this week. Trey Mooney was the clear man of the match, but Esera, Clarkson and Tupou also impressed.
This week, the Raiders are on the road for the first time this season, travelling to Henson Park for a meeting with the sixth placed Sydney Roosters. The Roosters are also undefeated in the two games they've played so far. They posted a 50-4 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies in Round 2 - and a 26-22 win over the Eels last week. The two teams have only played each other twice in the past five years, with the record standing at one apiece. The Roosters won the last contest, 22-12, in Round 4 of 2018 - but in this grade that's already ancient history. It should be a good test for the young Green Machine on Saturday - and they'll need to improve their defence if they're to keep their undefeated record.

Junior Reps Round 4 Preview
The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews Cup side are back in action in Round 4 against the Sydney Roosters after enjoying the bye last weekend.
“It would have been their effort [that impressed me the most in their Round 2 win],” coach David Small said. “We understand that they are only young footy players. They’re going to make errors so we just need to, week by week, make gradual improvements with our execution.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup got themselves back on the winners' list in Round 4, with a 18-10 victory over the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy at Henson Park. The Green Machine led 14-4 at the break, after scoring three tries. They stretched the lead in the 37th minute when winger Valasic Asomua crossed for her second try of the afternoon. And while a try to the Roosters' hooker Jessica Deakin narrowed the gap with five minutes left on the clock, the Raiders held on for an eight point win.
The result sees the Raiders move into second place on the ladder - on points differential. The leading three teams, the Steelers, Raiders and Sharks, have all posted three victories. However, the Raiders have one loss to their name, while the Steelers and Sharks have a game in hand. This week, the Raiders meet the seventh placed Canterbury Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have a 1 and 2 record so far this season, getting their first win in Round 4 against the last placed Newcastle Knights (32-8). The Raiders have won both of their previous clashes with the Bulldogs - 28-8 in Round 4 2019 at Cabramatta and 40-26 in Round 9 2018 at Belmore. We'll tip the resurgent Raiders to win this one at home.

AT A GLANCE: A hat trick for winger Josh Petrovic saw the Canberra Raiders seal a come from behind victory over the Sydney Roosters in Round 4 at Henson Park. The Raiders trailed 14-6 at half time, with Petrovic scoring the only first half try for the Green Machine. The home team went to a 12 point lead in the 38th minute, when winger Zac Sarfati bagged his double. But Petrovic scored his second of the day five minutes later - and a Leroy Murray try in the 49th minute saw the Raiders draw level. With just five minutes left, centre Samuel Gash grabbed an intercept, sending Petrovic on an 85 metre run to the try line for the match winner.
The fifth placed Raiders now return home for a Round 5 meeting the tenth placed Cronulla Sharks. The Raiders have a 2 and 1 record so far this season, while the Sharks are 1 and 2. Last week, the Sharks suffered a 34-20 loss to a top four Panthers outfit - but Cronulla have defeated the Raiders in both of their previous two meetings (26-6 at Gungahlin in Round 8 last year, and 30-26 at Seiffert in Round 3 2018). The Sharks have been in the top handful of teams over the past five years in this grade - so it should be another good test for the young Green Machine.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a 40-26 loss to the Sydney Roosters at Henson Park last Saturday - their first loss of the season. Coach Billy Thomson has been warning his charges that they need to lift in defence - and that was driven home in the clash with the Roosters, after they conceded seven tries. Raiders winger Livai Kaloutolu scored a double in the first half - but Canberra trailed 22-16 at the break. The home team then opened the second half with three tries in the space of eight minutes - piling on 18 points. Tries to Jack Williams and Caleb Esera saw the Raiders reduce the deficit, but it was not enough.
The Raiders have now tumbled to sixth place on the ladder, on points differential - but they are just one competition point away from the ladder leading Knights and Rabbitohs. In Round 5, Canberra will meet the 13th placed Cronulla Sharks - a team that has a 1 and 2 record so far this year (Raiders 3 and 1). The Sharks are coming off a 38-14 loss to the New Zealand Warriors last week at Shark Park. The Raiders won this clash last year, 30-26 at Gunghalin in Round 8.
The Raiders have a clearly better attacking record than the Sharks this year - scoring 32 points per match, compared with 24 for the Sharks. However, the Sharks have been better in defence (85 per cent tackle efficiency, compared with 77 per cent for the Raiders). The Raiders have conceded an average 27 points per game in 2020, the Sharks 22. Canberra will no doubt again be putting in plenty of work on their defence this week - and will be aiming to avoid the lapses in concentration we've seen in the first month of football. If they do, their attack should be too good for the Sharks at home.

Junior Reps Round 5 Preview
The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup side have started the season in fine form with three wins from four matches and will be looking to add another scalp this weekend.
“I’m pretty happy with where we are at,” coach John Hawke said. “But at the end of the day, these girls are still learning and evolving. You kind of saw that with our hiccup against the Wests Tigers. It was down to our preparation, more than it was down to the game itself. These girls are learning each week how to prepare for games and that it doesn’t matter who you are playing – you have to prepare well to play well.”

30th min TRY SHARKS to Talanoa Penitani after the siren... play seemingly halted but allowed to continue. Conversion to Siteni Taukamo from out wide, hits the post and bounces over. Costly, just before the break and the score line doesn’t reflect the run of play.

41st min TRY SHARKS to centre Taniloa Penitani. He’s big and just crashes over out wide. Sharks take advantage of a Raiders error mid field. Converted Siteni Taukamo. The goal looked certain to miss until the breeze took it.

46th min TRY SHARKS to Ricardo Oloapu, he’s huge and there’s no stopping the No. 14. That try right on half time was a real turning point... the Raiders needed a bigger lead at half time, given the wind. Converted Siteni Taukamo.
