Biggest player losses since 94

Post by schnitzel » July 28, 2018, 8:31 pm

Hate to pour more petrol on the pity party. But ive been thinking since our glory years of some key players that have left the club which could have made the difference in some of the down times. Here's a couple:

Glen Lazarus - went on to win 3 more premierships. Born winner and local junior

Ben Kennedy - came down from Casino as a teen and was just emerging when caught for recreational drugs. Was an absolute champion for both the Knights and Manly and a massive loss

Paul Vaughan - **** me to tears to see such a talent and local junior depart and fulfil his promise and become a NSW and probably Australian rep. To think we chose Jnr Paulo instead who is also leaving. Vaughan should have been the forward leader of our pack for next decade

Lazzo was in 91.

Finch in some ways. After him we became a feeder club.

Mick Monaghan could of been our starting HB but we persisted with Finch and an emerging Carney. How did that work out I wonder

It was actually Brad Drew and Mclinden who we preferred over him. Carney was later and Finch earlier.

The year after we let him go we had Matt Gafa play half the season at 5/8th.

Vaughany.....i love him, i still get upset seeing that beautiful example of a man with a red v on his chest, he could have single handedly dragged us into the top 8 and we let him get on his harley and ride off to the coast and we replaced him with a potato who once knocked another smaller potato over that played for manly
I've got legs, and i know how to use them

I vote Kennedy. He was a fringe NSW player here, got a couple of games off the bench in his final season.

Went to the Knights and almost immediately was seen as a top 15 player in the comp. Perputuated the idea that players will get more recognition at other clubs.

Kennedy seemed like a bit of a bell end at the time who didn't really want to be here. Would have ended up a Carney had we indulged him. Moving on lit a fire under his **** and he fulfilled himself.

Not sure when Ruben Wiki left but I'd say him. Our forward pack lost its mongrel and leader. The club lost a player who was an international and Origin quality. A drawcard player players wanted to play with and be around. One of our last links to have played in the golden era culture.

We lost him as a player and even worse as a mentor/recruiter/marketing tool in retirement.

Wiki is a good one. Every chance we'd have him around for a few seasons post playing career too. I saw some stuff on social media and his son still appears to be a Raiders fan.

He left over the club not being willing to give him a car or something didn't he? And the Warriors cheating the cap. :rant

Matt Elliott also had wet dreams over using Terry Martin and Jason Croker at 5/8 while Mick Monaghan wasted away in reserve grade.

How is Tedesco on this chat? He reneged didn’t he?

Vaughan definitely. Monaghan maybe. I feel like he was an Aiden Sezer level guy.

I agree with BadnMean about Kennedy. Awesome player but don’t know if we’d have got the same out of him even if the club did everything right.

Wiki still breaks my heart. Though we got his best years unlike these other guys.
