Round 14 2018. Penrith Panthers 23 - Canberra Raiders 22. It was more heart break for the Canberra Raiders and their fans. For the fourth time this year, the Raiders surrendered a lead in the final five minutes... and lost by two points or less.

2018 Round 14 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers

More on Round 14: As I saw it

In Round 15, the Raiders travel to Campbelltown Stadium for a meeting with the Wests Tigers. Sadly, the match already shapes as a “must win” for the Raiders, as they now need to win eight, perhaps seven, of their remaining 11 matches just to be assured of a place in the top eight. Star Raiders hooker Josh Hodgson will play his first match of the year after suffering an ACL injury in last year’s World Cup. Siliva Havili drops to the bench. Jordan Rapana will be out for 8-10 weeks with a hamstring injury, with Michael Oldfield replacing him on the wing. Joseph Tapine returns from suspension in the second row, with Sia Soliola to start at prop and Dunamis Lui dropping to the bench.

For the Wests Tigers, Malakai Watene-Zelezniak has been named on the wing after being a late withdrawal last weekend. Corey Thompson shifts to fullback with Tui Lolohea dropping out of the team. Matt McIlwrick will start at hooker, while Elijah Taylor moves to lock. Robbie Rochow will start in the second row. Matt Eisenhuth and Josh Aloiai move to the bench.

Late changes: The Canberra Raiders are expected to be 1-17. Emre Guler and Craig Garvey were omitted from the Canberra Raiders 21 man squad on Saturday. Brad Abbey and Jack Murchie have remained on the extended bench, but both players turned out for Mounties on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Wests Tigers ruled out half Josh Reynolds (hamstring) on Saturday, with Tyson Gamble now to make his debut. Chris McQueen has also dropped out of the Tigers squad.

History: The Raiders have won 15 of 33 matches against the Wests Tigers, just a 45 per cent win rate. Including games played against the Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers prior to the joint venture, the Raiders have won 48 of 90 contests. But that 53 per cent win rate is significantly boosted by the 75 per cent win rate against the Magpies. The Tigers have always been a bit of a bogey team for the Raiders... excepting the 1989 Grand Final.

The Raiders have, however, won six of the past 10 matches between the clubs, and the last three straight. Canberra won the only match played between the clubs in 2017, 46-6 at Canberra Stadium. In addition, the Raiders topped 50 points in both wins over the Tigers in 2016. The Raiders have a poor record at Campbelltown Stadium against the Wests Tigers, winning just two of nine matches. The Raiders have won a total of seven of the 18 matches they have played against all clubs at the venue.

2017 Round 3 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

2016 Round 26 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

2016 Round 8 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

This week’s "History Happens"? Of course, we never tire of the 1989 Grand Final!

1989 Grand Final Canberra Raiders V Balmain Tigers

Form: The Raiders have a WLLWL form line in their past five matches, while the Wests Tigers has a WLWLL record. The Tigers lost to the Sharks, 24-16, in their most recent outing. Their recent two victories have come over bottom four teams, the Cowboys and Bulldogs.

Betting: The Wests Tigers are $1.80 favourites in the match, with the Raiders paying $2.05. The Raiders have 1.5 points start in the line betting.

Stat attack: It is a battle between ninth (Panthers) and 10th (Raiders) on the competition ladder. The Tigers have a 7 and 7 record so far in 2018, while the Raiders are 5 and 8. Canberra has played five matches against top eight teams and is yet to win one. The Tigers have won three of eight matches against top eight sides.

The Raiders’ attack (22 points and 3.5 tries scored per match) is better than the Tigers (16 points and 2.4 tries per match). The Tigers, however, have much better defence, conceding an average of just 16 points per game, compared with 22 points conceded per game by the Raiders. Both teams have a very similar points differential. The Wests Tigers sit on +1, while the Raiders have conceded exactly the same number of points that they’ve scored.

The Wests Tigers produce more average running metres than the Raiders (Tigers 1497m, Raiders 1397m per match) and kicking metres (Tigers 500m, Raiders 379m per match). The Tigers don’t have as much impact per run, but they make more metres off the back of more complete sets (Tigers 79 per cent completion rate, Raiders 75 per cent). The Tigers make slightly fewer errors per game (Tigers 10, Raiders 11) and concede slightly fewer penalties (Tigers nine, Raiders 10). The Tigers also produce slightly more offloads (Tigers 12, Raiders 10 per match). However, the Raiders produce more line breaks (Raiders five, Tigers three per match on average).

The Raiders have a better tackle efficiency rate (Raiders missing 31 of 343 tackles required on average per match, Tigers missing 37 of 382).

Our tip: The Wests Tigers have shown great grit and determination to produce seven wins in 2018. They’re not a team that is over flowing with natural talent, but they’re well drilled and well coached. Their defence has been particularly impressive. They started the season well, with two wins over the Storm, and wins over the Roosters and Sea Eagles. But they have now lost six of their past eight matches. Moreover, the Tigers will be without veteran Benji Marshall, who has been a key contributor since returning to the club this season. Nevertheless, the Tigers will still have Josh Reynolds and Luke Brooks at their disposal.

Given the way the Raiders are playing, the Tigers deserve to be favourites. But if Raiders can’t beat a Tigers team missing Canberra bogey player Marshall, there’s not much hope for the rest of the season. The Raiders will be desperate and I think they can take the competition points. Raiders by six.

YEHAAAA!! No benji hoodoo!! We might actually stand a chance now.... oh who am i kidding, raiders will either lose by 20 or 1 point, 1 point most likely.

Tigers fans are probably thinking, YAY no leipana to carve us up this time, seeing as though rapana has scored about 5 tries in our past 3 games against them.

Stuart has listed Hodgson to play against the Tigers and said don’t expect the same ol Hodgson.
My question is why risk him if he is not truly ready ? Also I don’t think rushing Hodgson is going to change the team. The problem is leadership by the halves knowing how to close out games. The whole team is mentally brittle this has been going on now for two seasons and it won’t change just because of Hodgson. Stuart has a lot to do with the problem his game and bench management is poor and his lack of accountability and the reluctance to use any inform Mounties players.

We won’t beat Tigers.

Raiders are a lot better with hodgeson and havili compared to havili and whoever else they chuck in there. I think hodgeson is as good as hes going to be before a game. He's supposed to be having trained full contact for about a month but being match fit is a different thing. Luckily we have havili there.

Like most teams I dont think the Tigers can beat us but we tend to beat ourselves more often than not. Pretty important game

I saw a graphic yesterday that illustrated that in the last three games the Raiders have played the Tigers Croker alone has beaten them 54-22.

And it would be really, really nice if we could like, throw maybe 40 points on them and restrict them to few and we just don't have to stress about it. Please?

We typically lose to effort teams like the Tigers, they have a great defence so I have no idea why we are favourites.
