2018 Test England V New Zealand Kiwis: Teams and Game Day

Post by greeneyed » June 11, 2018, 9:22 pm

Canberra Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead selected for England’s Denver Test

Canberra Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead is heading to Denver for England’s Test against the New Zealand Kiwis.

Commenting on the squad, England head coach Wayne Bennett said: “I have selected a strong squad that I believe has the ability and talent to beat New Zealand in Denver. The game is going to be a tough one but we will go into it with confidence.

“We have been impressed with all the players this season and the three uncapped players deserve their call ups after showing their talent and determination both on and off the field. We have always been clear that the door to the senior squad is open to any player showing the form to be selected. The squad has a real mix of experience and youth and that will prove important during our time in Denver.

“Playing a mid-season test against Samoa last year proved invaluable and I’m sure this will be the same. It gives the team a chance to spend time together and me and my coaching staff to see how they perform together against one of the best teams in the World ahead of the International Test Series in the Autumn.”

England v New Zealand will be played at the Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver on Saturday June 23 (Kick off: 21.10pm BST) and fans in the UK can watch live from 9pm on BBC Two.

ENGLAND SQUAD FOR THE TEST MATCH AGAINST NEW ZEALAND (PROFESSIONAL AND COMMUNITY CLUB SHOWN):

John Bateman (Wigan Warriors, Bradford Dudley Hill)
George Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs, Dewsbury Moor)
Sam Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs, Dewsbury Moor)
Thomas Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs, Dewsbury Moor)
Jake Connor (Hull FC, Siddal)
James Graham (St George Illawarra Dragons, Blackbrook)
Ryan Hall (Leeds Rhinos, Oulton Raiders)

Tommy Makinson (St Helens, Wigan St Judes)

Yeah because if Whitehead gets injured we might finish 11th instead of 10th!

I don’t get the hate for the game? I am looking forward to watching it!

Don't think you're far off.

I'm guessing Ratchford at FB (in place of one of your Halls), O'Loughlin and Surgess the other way round and Chris Hill will probably start, with Turgess dropping to the bench in place of Thompson (who is quite some prospect, by the way).

I have a horrible feeling Bateman will start at centre with Connor on the bench - but I hope you've got that right. Assuming you have, Bateman should come in for Whitehead.

Love a mid-season test, by the way, and I'm all for expansion, but Denver is a very weird choice.

We’re staging the World Cup in North America. It grows the game internationally. We have a duty to build the code internationally... and build awareness in preparation for the World Cup. We must spread the game, even in small steps.

It is the same duty we have to build rugby league nationally. For example, by playing Origin at the MCG. And getting 87,000 to the match.

I propose that just because you make one really stupid decision. You should not follow that up with another stupid decision to make your first one slightly less stupid.

Yeah people like you is what's always been wrong with the game. I'm surprised you follow the Raiders... seems you'd be better suited to the days before 82 when it was just the NSWRL comp and wasn't diluted by those out of Sydney teams.

So basically you'd if be happy for us not to try new areas like Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide nationally or the USA internationally??? If we can even make a dent in that market it changes our game in a massive way... there are so many players that don't make it past the college system or in the NFL there. If we could get a presence in that country the money and potential fan base is huge for our game. Rugby are starting pro comps there and working hard to get USA Rugby up there with other nations. But it's ok we'll just ignore it cause it's a Micky mouse game.

And while we play origin, NZ and England need to play each other to continue their recent rise in form. The game needs strong international teams till play the Aussie's and grow the game.

I only knew about half these players. So had to look up positions to fill in the rest. They have 4 or 5 players who can play 5/8 in this squad. Which is weird, coz no way it isn't Widdop. Though... Widdop played FB in the WC didn't he? Could be an option

Personally I'd be happy for there never be a game of international Rugby League again. I get others are fans of it and that's cool. Their prerogative. But I couldn't give 2 **** about growing the game all I care about is the raiders. I couldn't care less what anyone says, bag me all you want. I agree with Gangrenous, this game is a deadset joke. Does anyone honestly think Rugby League will ever take off in the US? Our season is already **** thanks to Hodgo's injury in the World Cup.

Demo games in the US will have exactly one tenth of **** all impact on the lifetime of rugby league as a code.

Say goodbye to half the team you care so much about then mate. England, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa to name a few of the nations in our squad. They don't play origin but play for their nations and come to us better for it. How do you think Havilli got on our radar after Hodgo got injured?

Funny way to support a club you care so much about!

It's not about the game TAKING off in the US. It's about getting a presence there, getting even 1% of the US involved in our game would be huge. If you don't think that's worth a try please do the game a favor and stop following it now!!!

I don't have an issue with taking Rugby League/International matches to the USA, I mean we have done it with Origin.

I do question the timing though. Middle of their summer (baseball season) at high altitude. Dr Z. may be able to help with information but I understand that higher altitude means less oxygen getting to the muscles. Dr Z., Does this mean a greater potential risk of muscle injury? Are there any other risk factors?
Denver is almost 3 times the elevation of Canberra. My understanding is that they would only have a couple of days to acclimatise and then they fly home.

Congratulations EW on once again making the England side.

Zero follow up. This is a strategy to build to the North American World Cup. It’s a dreadful shame the NRL clubs are so inwardly focussed that they don’t do things that are in the interests of the code. This happens over and over... and that is why the clubs shouldn’t control the ARLC.

What’s the grand strategy? Is it one game followed up by a World Cup on a continent where no one gives a **** about it?

Who is the mastermind behind this strategy? Is he already in charge of planning the Raiders’ game closing strategies?

The aim is is to build the domestic competition in the USA and Canada. The Toronto Wolfpack... the teams that organisation wants to promote on the east coast of the USA. Have you missed all that?

Yes we should if we are looking to promote the game Internationally. But not as a one off and then nothing for decades. The lack of follow up was appalling. It is the same with the planned match of the Raiders v Manly in China. Don't just put on an exhibition and then tick the 'been there done that' box. It has to be done on a regular basis and promoted into schools as an alternative sport for kids. Not all Rugby League players have to be giants. We could learn a lot from the AFL expansion around Australia in this regard. They get into the schools and provide footballs and develop coaches. They sponsor matches into green field areas. It has worked for them. With better planning and commitment it could work for Rugby League.
