Can't believe how duded we got in Sydney, not even a final of any kind.
I guess that's what happens when no one turns up to games.

All the other State Governments came up with sponsorships. NSW refused.Brew wrote:Can't believe how duded we got in Sydney, not even a final of any kind.

I would expect RLWC was making many fewer demands than Union, soccer and cricket too.

Seriously?
2 Lebanon games in Sydney and not one in Newcastle. What a slap in the face to the rugby league heartland.

Rugby League World Cup: Australia to play France at Canberra Stadium in 2017
Australia will play France in the Rugby League World Cup as one of three pool matches to be held at Canberra Stadium next year, but the ACT missed out on hosting a final.
The French will also play Lebanon in the nation's capital in the opening round, with Fiji Bati to face a yet-to-be-determined European qualifier as part of the draw that was announced on Tuesday.
The qualifier will be decided in November, with Wales, Ireland, Russia, Serbia, Italy and Spain all in the running to make it.

Who are the contenders to qualify still?
I'm pretty excited for this. I work at Prime and we are starting to advertise it already.

Re: 2017 World Cup
Why does one of the groups involve 3 of the top 5 ranked nations, and another has the other two top 5 teams?
Re: 2017 World Cup
Disappointing that Darwin are given a QF over us. Do they even have a proper stadium? Should've been restricted to the group stages IMO.
Odd that both Gold Coast and Newcastle aren't hosting a single game. And that Sydney have no finals matches at all. 3 matches in Townsville and Cairns respectively seems a bit overkill as well, though I guess they probably stumped up the money for it.
Apart from that it seems to be a very good geographic spread - it's great to extent the reach of the game instead of limiting it to a couple of cities on the East Coast.

Who wants to watch a lopsided final like NZ vs USA?
Re: 2017 World Cup
It makes for tighter contests in the pool stages, while still giving the stronger pools more shots at the finals... but still gives the minnow countries a shot at getting into the finals.Notaroboticfish wrote:Why does one of the groups involve 3 of the top 5 ranked nations, and another has the other two top 5 teams?

Re: 2017 World Cup
That won't happen because of the number of places given to the stronger pools, it's the same as the last World Cup. It'll likely be Australia, England, New Zealand and another team in the semi finals.Notaroboticfish wrote:I want games between two of Australia/New Zealand/England in the semi finals and the final.Green_Hammock wrote:I think they are trying to do it so only one of England, Nz and Aus make it to the final..Notaroboticfish wrote:Why does one of the groups involve 3 of the top 5 ranked nations, and another has the other two top 5 teams?

Canberra Stadium to host Kangaroos in Rugby League World Cup
The ACT government has landed three Rugby League World Cup pool matches, including Australia against France. And now he knows the Rugby League World Cup games coming to Canberra, Raiders CEO Don Furner said he would look into using one of the three games as a replacement for members missing out on the Warriors game.
"Now I know we've got three games, now I know what they are, certainly we'll work on that, but I've still got to get the deal done over there [in Wellington] first," Furner said.

Canberra Raiders Josh Papalii says he wants to represent Kangaroos in his home town
Canberra Raiders forward Josh Papalii said he would use the chance to play on his home ground for Australia as motivation ahead of next year's Rugby League World Cup, after he "wasn't playing that good" three years ago when the Anzac Test was held at Canberra Stadium.
"I haven't played any rep footy in Canberra yet and hopefully I'm a part of that squad and I get to represent Australia in my home town," Papalii said.

There is a lot of games in hotter and more humid climates. So it'll be tough on the players but good for the game to get to these places

Firstly **** you. Sydney didn't want to part with the money and just expected to be handed everything. Well tough titties. They are building a brand new Rugby League stadium up here but if that is not ready in time they have TIO stadium that hosts AFL and NRL games every year.afgtnk wrote:Disappointing that Darwin are given a QF over us. Pretty excited for the fans up there that Darwin has a quarter final game. I like that there are no Sydney finals, the support in Brisbane and maybe even Melbourne will be better than what they would get there anyway.

Have a World Cup every two years: Voss
If veteran commentator Andrew Voss had his way, rugby league would have a World Cup every two years.
"If you really want to take international league to another level, I'd have a World Cup every two years," Voss said.
"There are athletics championships every year, golf and tennis majors every year; there is no reason why we need to follow the Olympics or soccer World Cup scheduling [with four year cycles]. It would mean international league has more meaningful matches more often with a trophy up for grabs.

I agree with Vossy.
Re: 2017 World Cup
As good as it is to see the reach of the game being extended to all parts of Australia, I simply don't think it's right or a good look to have the QF of a World Cup played at a sub-standard oval ground. If it were a modern or purpose built facility with a decent capacity, by all means.Manchild wrote:Firstly **** you. What a stud.
Re: 2017 World Cup
This article is critical of RLWC for not staging matches in western Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle. But bottom line is the NSW government refused to come up with any support for the event... nothing. My suggestion is Andrew Webster sends the criticism to the NSW government. Rugby league has traditionally come cheap while other sports get huge government support to run major events in their cities. Well good on RLWC, they've stopped accepting being treated like a second class sport.
How Sydney gave away the Rugby League World Cup
Andrew Webster
In the first talks with the NSW Government, they bandied around figures of $4 million for a group of matches. Then $2 million for a group of matches.
Then, six weeks ago, they offered dollars. The SCG Trust stepped in and offered hirer's fees at cost to ensure the Lebanon games went ahead. Otherwise? NSW had no games.
Then Brown approached NSW Sports Minister Stuart Ayres and then Premier Mike Baird through NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg.
"I spoke to Ayres and Todd spoke on my behalf to the Premier," Brown said. "Their view was we overestimated our budgets. We can't find the money that you're after. It's really sad because we think it's a great event."
