I’m a bit behind where I usually am this time of year because I missed Rocky River Run due to a scheduling clash with Magic Round, but I’m hoping to just sneak in under an hour.

I should be ok to get close to that. Did my PB for the year at Parkrun of 29.30 last week, and hoping to maintain that this morning as a good warmup for tomorrow’s run.

Interestingly, most of my mates who do events like Yeppoon and RRR don’t do the Parkrun the day before, but I always do. I just find it’s a good warmup and doesn’t take away from the event on Sunday at all, but each to their own, I guess.
Nice. Go hard mate.

The static breathholds are in a pool, though I just did that 4:30 on land (in theory, I should be able to get close to 5 minutes in water based on that number as the mammalian dive reflex generally improves breathhold times). That said, it largely depends on the day, stress levels, relaxation etc.

Depth is a separate discipline, I'm working on that as well. Right now I'm a bit of an amateur, hovering around depths of 18-26 m. Amazing sport, gets you very much looking inwards to confront your inner demons.

Anyone else concerned Nicks still out there running somewhere, delayed somewhat by having to stop every 30seconds to drop some Mal-bait online?

Ah ****. Sorry to keep you hanging lads. Just finished now, got the 10km done in a fair bit under a week, pretty stoked!

Nah, I’m all seriousness, had one of my worst ever events, definitely my worse 10km out of the five I’ve done.

Firstly, there was no one hour pacer, which is my whole strategy, events where there’s been a one hour pacer I’ve stuck with them the whole race and it’s genuinely slowed me down the first half, allowing me the energy to take off in the last few kms and finish strongly, but that wasn’t the case this year. This year I paced myself and completely ballsed it up, meaning I was dying the last few kms and essentially limped over the line.

That sucked, and also my music **** out on me as the event started and it took me about 2km to get it to work again, had to keep putting my AirPods back in the case and in the end I shut down and restarted my watch, which was an awful way to start the race too. But there’s no way I can run an hour without music, so I had to get it fixed.

All up ended with just shy of 1:03, easily my worst 10km event, and a fair way off the hour I was going for. Was pretty disappointed really.

End of the day I’m just not as fit as I usually am this time of year. This is usually my second event and I’m gearing up for my third (Gladstone) in a few weeks, but this year that one last week is the only one I’ll do due to scheduling clashes (Magic Round and then Raiders v Cowboys)

Dirty Detour, 50km at monkerai. I've put gravel tyres onto my scalpel hardtail but yeah giving up equipment advantage for sure.
I whacked in another 30kms today instead of 20 and my times are stacking up to where I was before convict so pretty happy. I'll do 20kms tomorrow and maybe have a swim Friday before event Saturday

Nice. I’m interested in some gravel stuff, never done it. And it’s the only bike I don’t have😂. Planning on picking something up once this race is done, spending way too much money in that and have banned myself from the bikes so I don’t have any stupid crashes.

Good luck with it mate, hope it’s a great day out!

cheers mate, I'm lost on whether my 2nd bike should be trail/downhill or gravel. My scalpel ht is a great xc all-rounder just see how it handles the gravel wearing gravel tyres I suppose

Yesterday Dirty Detour was harder than I anticipated, fell in a world of cramping disaster at 26kms so just halfway and with 33% of climbs ahead. I set myself a 2hr 30mins target and struggled in at 3hrs 13mins with 20mins of stoppages.
Usually it's calf cramps but yesterday it was quad and I just couldn't sort it out. Really well run casual friendly atmosphere event especially for those who love camping.

That’s a juicy climb at 15k!!! No wonder it dragged a bit out of the legs! What were you using for nutrition?

yeah it was probably the pre-climbing that got me.
I had nexus hydration powder in my bottles, SIS beta fuel gels and SIS energy's nootropic gels. Handful of chips and snakes at the 20km food station.
Tried crampfix to no avail.
my usual 34km ride has a similar climb but 1055m in 48km is a kicker.

No need to rush it doc.

I've been crook for 5 weeks out of my 16 week program. When I came back to Australia last month I had one run in three weeks because I was recovering from Covid or Influenza. Took four weeks to properly shake. I then had a 30k week and ramped up to a 60k week last week. I'm meant to be around my highest weeks. Then I picked up a nasty headcold last Sunday. It totally sucks but I've got 7 and a half weeks to load up. Maybe a shorter taper than I planned.

2139 mate. Flying out Monday and in the taper now. Had a 3 hour run on Sunday as the last longish run with some decent vert - knocked 25 mins off my best time. Absolutely peaking and had a fantastic build.

Still completely terrified of what’s to come, but also champing at the bit.

Very very real. I’m happy though, can’t have done much more, have been all in on this build for 8 months. Now just need to freshen up and see if I have what it takes.
