Test series against the Kiwis beginning tomorrow and with it RedRocket's excruciating daily analyses.

On another note, looks like England's Indian campaign has failed like the proverbial Yorkshire pudding.

Kiwis completely wasted the first session with some poor bowling. Obviously had a proper reevaluation at lunch break. Been right on target since.

Aussies 9/279 at stumps with Green getting his ton right near the end. Fairly even day although I'd say advantage Australia after being sent in

Avg 1st innings in Wellington over the past decade is 280. It goes down to 250 if you remove last yrs 500. Low of 183 in 2016, and high of 507 in 2023. Most of them hover just under 250 though.

58% of the time, the team batting 2nd wins.

So... per the above, 280 is likely not enough. HOWEVER, our attack isn't like most others either.

Green, really hope this is his coming of age knock. Pretty sure I said the same about his 100 in India. However, this time the side is built around him, he's batting in his preferred 4, he's got the gully sown up, and bowling full now, not just short stuff. He doesn't have the keys, but you can see they are trying to build around him, so they'll come.

This isn’t great reading...

Since scoring 111 against England, Labuschagne has scores of 9, 13, 16, 2, 63, 4, 60, 62*, 10, 1*, 3, 5 and 1.

Head since England, 40, 14, 17, 0, 10, 119, 0, 0, 1.

Carey since his 111 vs Sth Africa in 2022, 36, 10, 0, 7, 3, 0, 48, 66* (<<vs india), 66, 20, 22, 21, 8, 5, 20, 10, 28 (<<vs england), 34, 4, 53, 38, (<< vs Pakis), 15, 65, 2, (<<vs WI) and 10 today vs NZ.

Add in Smiths scatter gun since India, 16, 6, 110, 34, 22, 2, 41, 17, 71, 54, 31, 45, 26, 50, 38, 4*, 12, 11*, 6, 91*, 31 today vs NZ.

Green is probably in the scatter gun category, but maybe, just maybe it's on the up and up.

Marsh and Uzi have been great.

The top 7 is a bit rocks and diamonds ATM.

Bottom line is our batting has not been reliable for some time. Funny thing is radio commentators were saying we'd lost stability since Warner retired......which is total horse ****. Warner has been the worst culprit this past year or so. Usi has been our rock and Marsh has stepped up since his recall. The rest have been very flakey.

It's not like any of them are about to be dropped but if it continues the questions will be raised.

At what point does Smith go back to the middle order for Bangers or Renshaw (whos Shield form has been mud since getting the call up)?

Labuschagne is blocking balls that Smith and Usi and Marsh are driving.

It’s fine to feel bat on ball but there’s no intent to score from Marnus.

Poorly out of touch. I heard on the tv yesd he’s hot start to his career where he was avg 60+ has dropped to 50. Still white hot no doubt but after what we saw when he emerged he’s falling back to human levels.

Yep, 1 run off 27 balls in the first innings is not good. Bob Simpson used to say that the safest spot for a batsman was at the non facing end. Labu could look to work the ball early to get some runs and gain some confidence.

I don’t think Smith is going back to the middle order. Khawaja will be 38 for next summer. If Smith can average 40+ as an opener (who’d doubt him) then that’s better than 2 new faces at the top in 12 months time.

I don’t agree with the tactic of not taking runs to protect the no11.

Just hit out, you may get another 20-30 runs.

Green has listened to you PJ he hit a 6 to bring up the Australian 300 and another to bring up his top score in Test cricket and now another one. Green 129 n.o. Big Wood has just hit a 4 to take him to 11 n.o. He has beaten the combined scores of Labu, Head and Goat. I forgot to mention it is now a 50 run partnership between Hazlewood and Green.

Now Hazlewood is refusing to take the single. It was the fifth ball of the over, but sheesh. They really don't want Hazlewood to face O'Rourke. It's drinks in Session 1, Day 2. Australia 9/332.

TBF, Green was 13 from 50 yesterday. So you can build into an innings.

However, I agree with everyone, Labu isn't batting with intent, and seems to have lost his "get off strike" options. However, the Kiwis bowled a 6th-9th stump line to him. He only hit 6 balls in that 27, and 1 was the nick. TBF he could have let the nick go, and 1 other. Looks like the plan is to bowl very wide to him.

I'd rather the set batsmen swing at this point. But I'm happy for them to pick their ball and protect the tail. I'm not ok with block 4-5 take a single. At least try to hit boundaries.
So the batting ATM is ok.

The NZ bowlers have changed ends and O'Rourke bowls to Hazlewood, but his second ball to him is a bye. Hazlewood off strike. Green takes a single of the second last ball and Hazlewood keeps the final ball out.
