NRL supports proposed live betting ban

The NRL has backed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's proposal to ban the promotion of live betting odds during match telecasts.

The Federal Government's proposed changes would not only stop the spruiking of live odds but also crosses to gambling representatives on or near the field.

Gambling advertising would be restricted to television commercial periods only.

Ms Gillard said the move would be a positive development for Australian families, and NRL chief executive Dave Smith announced rugby league would support the proposal.

"The overwhelming sentiment is that we do not want to see betting as the primary focus of our game," Smith said.

"Fans, and particularly young fans, should not be subject to excessive promotion of betting during matches.

"We want young kids to be enjoying the skills of their favourite team, not quoting the odds."

The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has already announced that it is reviewing its position in relation to corporate partnerships with betting operators after a sponsorship arrangement with bookmaker Tom Waterhouse fell through.

The NRL does not currently have a major partnership in this area and has no immediate plans to pursue further proposals.

"I think we all accept that sports betting is a reality and that it can provide a lot of enjoyment in the right circumstances," Smith said.

"It is about finding the proper balance and today's announcement by the government is an important step in that direction."
