Re: 2012 Fans' Choice Player of the Year
Shaun Fensom and Blake Ferguson joint winners of 2012 Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Award
The Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Award winners for 2012 are lock Shaun Fensom and centre/winger Blake Ferguson. It is the first time that the award has been shared, following a decision that players who tie at season's end would both be awarded trophies. Blake Ferguson led the award for a large part of the Raiders' season, but was overtaken with a number of man of the match performances from Fensom. It was only in the final round match against the Warriors that Ferguson picked up the points needed to take a share of the leaderboard.
For Shaun Fensom, it is the second year in a row where he has been recognised by the Canberra Raiders fans: he was the Fans' Choice winner in 2011. His 2011 season was marked by an incredible defensive workload, but he has now further rounded out his game in attack. He was again clearly the Canberra Raiders top tackler in 2012 (with 851 tackles), but he also made more than 2,000 metres with the ball in hand - one of three Canberra Raiders forwards to do so. His feats are all the more remarkable because he missed a number of matches with injury early in the season. Fensom is a product of the Canberra Raiders juniors system, and captained the premiership winning Toyota Cup team of 2008. He's now well and truly stepped up as a leader in the Raiders' NRL team.
Blake Ferguson was a stand out in the backs for the Raiders in 2012, and he has made the most of a shift from wing to centre. No Raider made more metres than Ferguson (2951 metres) and with 10 four pointers to his name, he was amongst the Raiders' top three try scorers - behind Jarrod Croker and Reece Robinson. He has clearly enjoyed the opportunity to get more opportunity to get his hands on the ball. Ferguson was controversially dropped for a match during the season, but he came back from that more determined than ever to contribute to the team. He played every other match of the season. Ferguson came to the Raiders in 2011 from the Sharks and in just his second season, he's proven to be one of the most valuable players at the club.
The Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice has been awarded since 2004, with the inaugural winner being Ruben Wiki. Other winners have included Jason Smith, Alan Tongue, Terry Campese and Josh Dugan. The award, sponsored by The Greenhouse Canberra Raiders supporters site (http://www.thegh.com.au), is voted on by the fans on line, who give 3-2-1 points to the best players each week.
