Surfer Kerby Brown rides huge wave in Western Australia[

Image

WEST Australian surfer Kerby Brown has ridden one of the biggest waves in Australia this year - and paddled away with torn shoulder muscles from the dumping.

Brown's ride on a monster wave at a secret loaction off the WA coast is the latest entry in the Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards, reports the PerthNow website.

*'s has a knack for hunting out and riding some of the biggest, heaviest and scariest waves in our *'s south-west corner.

In his latest escapade Brown stayed true to form and tackled one of the craziest waves to be ridden around the world in the past few months – and consequently provided one of the most impressive entries and a genuine contender for the Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards.

“What can I say…*'s a nut!” photographer Andrew Buckley says of the Kalbarri surfer.

â€*'s really the only wave I’ve seen do that there, they’re usually pretty perfect but that one tripled up, it just went kind of inside out….he did so well to manage to get where he was.”

Kerby agreed on the unusual nature of this extraordinary wave.

“Usually the wave never steps out or goes evil like that one, but it just went dry…it was the hardest wave I’ve ever had to surf.”

If the ride itself wasn’t hard enough, the beating that followed ensured Kerby knew he had pulled into something big, and feared he would drown.

“I was lucky to get to where I got, I went straight over in the lip and did about 10 backflips and then pulled a muscle in my shoulder.

"It felt like I ripped my arm out of *'s socket, my leggie snapped and then I felt like I was the deepest I’d ever been (underwater).

"I took about 10 huge big strokes to get up and I was seriously struggling. I finally got to the surface and I was ready to pass out, luckily my brother was there on the ski.”

*'s brother Courtney tells the story from the other side of the tow-rope.

“When I towed him into it he was so deep and I was looking down and it just looked stupid. All the water was draining off the reef and I couldn’t even see him or the bottom of the wave.

"I was scared for him. I noticed that he fell at one point and then we were all looking for him. It was so heavy. Then he just popped up and we were so stoked.”

If the act of catching, riding and surviving the waves at this secret outer reef isn’t challenging enough, getting there and getting back is a test in itself.

Photographer Andrew Buckley explains the dangers: â€*'s a half hour ski ride and *'s bombies (large waves similar to the one ridden) everywhere and it has to be big to break…massive…so you’re pounding through swell and wind.”

Kerby agreed, but expresses the optimism and confidence that has seen him thrust into the thick of some of *'s heaviest waves, “It was a nightmare getting out there. We spent about an hour punching into the wind and the chop and finally got out there and it looked really bad and we weren’t going to surf. It (the wind) was real onshore and real deathly looking, but then the wind started to drop and a couple of clean ones started to come through, so we were onto it.”

The wave itself was ridden as the sun was setting; this meant doing the arduous trek back to the mainland as night closed in.

Courtney Brown makes it clear that this was no leisurely afternoon surf trip. “It was absolutely ridiculous, it was freezing, so cold, I had a steamer with a wet weather coat on. It was pretty much dark when we left. It was the wildest ocean, so raw.”

The man who captured the amazing images, Andrew “Shorty” Buckley summed up the afternoon: â€*'s not really that much more to say about that wave other than *'s ridiculous.”

Think that these horror stories mean this secret outer reef is only frequented by the experienced Brown brothers? Think that this one “ridiculous” wave will be the last we see from this session?

Think again. Kerby explains: “It was pretty crowded, I hadn’t seen that many out there before, there were six skis so it was a bit of a jostle.”

Stay tuned to http://www.surfinglife.com.au/bigwaveawards for all the latest entries in the Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards.

Showdown for the World titles at Confital

Image

A nail biting finish is shaping up for both the Men and *'s International Bodyboarding Association World Titles with a number of riders in the race.

Unlike our Pro Surfing counterparts, the race for a World Championship has never been closer and the final event at El Confital in the Canary Islands will deliver a Grand Stand finish.

The *'s titles race has 4 riders all within striking distance.

In the lead as they hit the home straight is former World Champion Guilherme Tamega from Brazil.

To make this feat all the more impressive, Tamega took a year out of the competition arena in 2007 and had to start most of the season as either a wildcard or further down the seeding order because of his lack of ratings points.

But like a true champion the Brazilian started the season with a solid performance at Pipeline and then continued his great form with wins at Chile’ and Sintra.

Fellow countrymen Uri Valadao has also been in outstanding form in 2008 and led the ratings for most of the season. Currently second, Valadao also silenced his critics with a runner up position at Pipe dispelling the theory that the flyboy was a small wave specialist that would struggle in the juice.

Sitting in third place and looking to capture his third World title is Australian Ben Player. Ben has been a consistent performer in 2008 and his only win came in the Human Shark Island challenge in Australia. A finalist in last *'s event, Ben grew up surfing a south coast reef break almost identical to El Confital and will be fired up for a solid performance.

And finally in forth place is the outsider and quite achiever on the IBA World *'s Tour Pierre Louis Costes.

The Frenchmen has been in mind-blowing form this year and if the other three frontrunners stumble early the title could be his.

*'s a storybook finish to an incredible year of competition.

The race for the IBA World *'s Tour is just as tight as the Men.

Brazilians have dominated the Tour and the current ratings leader is Jessica Becker.

Jessica has just come off a win in Venezuela and will have her work cut out for her with Neymara Carvahlo and Isabella Sousa positioned right behind her.

The only European with a chance of winning is Eunate Aguirre (SPN) who I sitting in forth place.

Quiksilver take out Jim Beam Industry Challenge at Dee Why

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 November, 2008 : - - Dee Why, NSW -- With a *'s who of professional surfing on hand at the Jim Beam Industry Challenge today it was Quiksilver who walked away with the crown in epic conditions at Dee Why. Dominating the final, and the whole event, in emphatic style walked away with 20 cases of Jim Beam and the 2008 Jim Beam Industry Challenge champions.

With a team consisting of former ASP World Tour competitor Matt Hoy, Jamie Thompson, Jesse Lowe, Fraser Standen and dual ASP World Champion Tom Carroll – Quiksilver were the standouts of the event. “I’m stoked, Hoy said. “It was such a fun day surfing with the guys and catching up with everyone.”

As one of the newest events on the Jim Beam Surftag Series, the Jim Beam Industry Challenge saw a handful of the biggest names in world surfing competing for their workplace.

Despite the likes of Zahn Foxton (Manly Surf School), Col Bernasconi (Tracks and Waves), Rob Bain (O’Neill), Matt Bemrose (Volcom) and Mitchell Ross (Hurley) competing for their respective companies it was Quiksilver, RVCA Chilli, Aloha Surfboards and Ocean and Earth who were left standing in the final.

“The level of surfing on hand was really high,” Hoy continued. “Everyone was really keen to take it out, so we’re stoked to have won.”

Unlike conventional surfing contests, which play upon individual results, the Jim Beam Industry Challenge is a team-based event drawing upon the performances of five surfers per team. Steve Harrison, Global Surftag Managing Director was amazed by the talent and surfing pedigree on talent.

“The level of surfing on show today was unreal,” he said. “To have some of the *'s best surfers down here at Dee Why competing for their workplaces in awesome conditions was such a treat,” Harrison admitted. “It was a great day and I’m looking forward to the remainder of the Jim Beam Surftag series.”

Teams competing at the Jim Beam Industry Challenge were O’Neill, FCS, Tracks, Billabong, Hurley, Manly Surf School, Volcom, Australian Surfer HQ, Aloha, ASL, Quiksilver, Ocean and Earth, Analog, Warner, RVCA and SDS.

Day 1 pumps for Confital…

The storybook ending to the IBA World Bodyboard Tour continued today at El Confital in the Canary Islands with perfect 3-5 footers greeting competitors in the opening two rounds of the *'s competition.

Image

Unlike our Pro Surfing counterparts, the race for a World Championship has never been closer and this final event at El Confital in the Canary Islands is delivering a Grand Stand finish to an amazing year of competition.

Three IBA World Titles are up for grabs with the *'s, *'s and Drop Knee champions all being decided this week.

Everything about this set-up is incredible.

Image

The structure is massive and the crowds of passionate spectators are intense, but its the wave itself that steals the show.

A perfect right hand point with a ramping end bowl that allows for highflying aerobatics or deep tube rides. *'s the ultimate arena for the showdown of the millennium.

Today the locals showed the worlds best how to ride Confital with a fearless approach to the opening rounds.

Emesto Evana (Esp) was the days top scorer taking both the single highest score and best two wave combo to stamp himself as a serious contender.

Image

The other highlights were coming thick and fast.

Every time you looked to the line-up some local was fanging down the line and busting mind-boggling move.

Australian Alex Leon was the only International in the early rounds to progress through to round three with a strong performance that included a series of deep tube rides and powerful rolls. It was a successful return to the competition arena for Leon after a few years out of the spotlight.

The forecast for the rest of the week shows plenty of promise and the webcast will mean that the worlds best will be beamed live into lounge rooms of frothing fans around the globe.

Can Tamega pull off the comeback of the century?

Can Uri launch his way to his first world title?

Can Ben Player capture his third world title or will the cheeky little Frenchman Pierre Luis Costes sneak up the outside and beat them all…wait, watch and witness it all here at ibatour.com.

Tomorrow competitors are asked to meet at the event site at 9am for a 10am start.

The first heats will be R3 of the Men and the rest of the days activities will be decided by the conditions.

Water temp down here on the coast is sensational at the moment. Not too much decent swell going around in the last few days though.

Hamilton's ride a Teahupoo is insane. Also, if you watch in again, at the start of the Teahupoo segment they show a small series of wipeouts - there is a bloke who drops in, gets stuck and tries to steady himself with his hand, and just gets worked so horribly. He goes over the falls, faceplants halfway down, hits the bottom, and then gets sucked back up the face and over again. The worst wipeout you'll ever see.

The scariest wave is at Mavericks. How anybody would have the balls to surf that is just beyond me, let alone how Jeff Clark surfed it for 15 years on his own...

I found the wipeout I was talking about before. Its the first one on this video - I've never seen someone eat s**t as badly as this guy did. I wouldn't even be all that suprised if he died.

*EDIT*

Actually, having watched the whole thing, I take that back. The wipeout at Jaws at 4.28 is much, much worse. There's a shocker from Mavericks at 6.15 as well, the dude free-falls about 40 feet.

Some bad wipeouts for sure!

Ross Clark Jones had a ripper this year that can be seen at the Billabong triple x awards!

It always amazes me that guys have these crazy wipeouts on massive waves and come out ok and then go and screw themselves on three footers. I have dislocated my shoulder three times in the surf, every time the waves were smallish. Never really had any injuries in big surf except almost drowning.

I have to say that the cold water adds a little danger as well. I went surfing a week ago over here(east coast usa) and the water was 40 celsius, I almost started crying. I would not want to deal with 20 foot wave in water like that :nooo
