49th min TRY RAIDERS to hooker Alex Hardy. They run it on the last, great set. Braydan Darmody misses, from almost in front, hits the post.

18 mins to go TRY BULLDOGS to fullback Jai Callaghan. Looked like he bounced it. The Raiders lost the ball after the kick off… and all of a sudden… No conversion from the sideline.

Good first up win against one of the comp favourites. Milin aside I was really impressed with Tuigamala. Leota also did a solid job when he came on for Brophy, who was also good.

The stream quality was better than last year as well, although the app crashed a lot for me.

I’m watching the replay of Matt’s right now and the picture quality on Bar TV is great. Looks like HD. The Raiders have created a scaffolding tower for the TV camera and commentators on the other side of the ground. You can actually see the whole field of play now. Maybe they’ve put in better cabling/wireless capacity for the broadcasts. The Raiders are continuing to do a fair bit of work to improve things at Kippax.

Just saw that Bailey Logue was sent off after the Harold Matthews full time siren. He’d almost set up a winning try a couple of times, one just before full time with a chip and chase and regather. Must have been back chat of some sort.

Brophy was outstanding in the first half. Rare to see a hooker at that age level with what looks like all the skill attributes + size.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced a strong performance in a 40-22 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs on Saturday at Raiders Belconnen. Raiders prop Jesse Milin was the star, scoring four tries - a double to open the match and a double to sew up the victory. The Bulldogs simply could not handle the big man and they struggled to even put him to the ground. When Milin left the ground late in the game, he received a huge round of applause. Four tries in a game is an achievement for any player, but it is even more rare for a prop.

Hooker Mitch Brophy was also strong, scoring the third try of the game in the 17th minute. It was a the result of a darting run out of dummy half and a good dummy pass. He was forced from the field after suffering a serious head knock, early in the second half. It will likely put him on the sidelines for a couple of weeks, due to concussion protocols. He will be a big loss, though bench hooker Ezra Leota performed well in the second half.

The Raiders had an 18-0 lead by the 20 minute mark, thanks to the Milin and Brophy tries. The Bulldogs put themselves on the board in the 24th minute, with a try in the corner to winger Paul Johnson. But just two minutes later, five eighth Braydan Darmody put up a bomb into the red zone - and halfback Jamie Cowling chased and tapped the ball backwards. Bench forward Sam Chapman was on the spot to claim a try.

The Raiders went to the break with a 24-6 lead. But the Bulldogs fought back. In the first minute of the second half, Canterbury five eighth Bronson Reuben made a break up the middle, with fullback Jai Callaghan backing up for a four pointer. The visitors drew within six after Bulldogs hooker Kaawyn Patterson made a short run out of dummy half to score a try. Jamie Cowling put Canberra bench forward Alex Hardy over the line in the 49th minute. But the Bulldogs struck straight back, with a second try to Callaghan keeping them right in the match. Two tries for Milin in the space of three minutes wrapped it up for the Green Machine.

The Raiders travel to Cronulla for a clash with the Sharks in Round 2. The match precedes the Raiders' first NRL trial of 2025 against the Panthers. The Sharks also had a Round 1 win, beating the Panthers, 26-18, at HE Laybutt Field. Winger Bailey Leach got a double, while half Blake Wardrobe and benchie Tipene Thompson also crossed. It was four tries each, with the goal kicking of Sharks five eighth, Callum Grantham proving to be the difference. Canberra junior Yuri Hromow, poached by the Sharks in the off season, made his debut in blue and black.

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Raiders suffered a 22-18 loss to the Canterbury Bulldogs on Saturday - but they fought right to the end. A slow start for the Green Machine proved to be very costly. The Dogs produced two tries inside the first five minutes - to captain Chinedu Udeh and speedy fullback Jackson Winnett. That five minutes was probably the difference between winning and losing the game. Canberra didn't even get a hold of the ball until the eighth minute. A try to Canterbury lock Billy Mulheran in the 17th minute saw the visitors take a 16-0 lead. The Raiders only got possession in Canterbury's half for the first time, two minutes later.

It was always going to be difficult for the Raiders to come back from that position. However, they made a good attempt, scoring three tries in the second half. Seven minutes in, Raiders hooker Campbell Lloyd looked almost certain to score, after a good break from 40 metres out. However, he threw a pass which hit the ground. Soon after, Canberra had their first points, with halfback Joaz Ayamiseba putting fullback Kye Anderson into a big gap. The Bulldogs stretched their lead in the 42nd minute, through a try to charging prop Vunivalu Niupalua.

The Raiders came home strongly from there. Lloyd set up a four pointer for Tyler Jordan, who crashed through from short range. Three minutes later Raiders winger Sebastian Jones crossed out wide. The Bulldogs produced an error close to their own line, with the ball ending up in the hands of Canberra second rower Jezaiah Charles - who promptly shifted the ball to the left.

The Raiders trailed by four with just under 10 minutes remaining - and the Raiders had a couple of chances of at least levelling the match. Two minutes from time, Canberra five eighth Bailey Logue made a huge break from his own 30 metre line, but centre Altas Atilua couldn't quite grasp the Logue offload. There was a lot of open space in front of him. Then in the final 20 seconds, Logue chipped ahead for himself and regathered near half way. But his pass was knocked down by the Dogs. Game over. Logue was sent from the field, it appears for dissent, after the final hooter had sounded.

The Raiders meet the Sharks at Cronulla next Saturday. It is one of the lead up matches to the Raiders' first NRL trial at Shark Park. The Sharks produced a 30-16 win over the Panthers at HE Laybutt Field in Round 1. The Sharks finished 2024 in fourth place on the ladder and were knocked out of the finals in Week 2 by the Magpies (8-6).

Jezaiah Charles and Geordan Amaiu will be the starting props, with Kodi Roberts and Jude Cattle shifting to the second row.

16. Kiara Konz 17. Paige Attard 18. Juanita Jang 21. Abbie Hamilton 22. Angel Schaafhausen-Mino

AT A GLANCE: The Tarsha Gale Raiders suffered a 54-12 defeat at the hands of the Parramatta Eels in Round 1 on Saturday at Raiders Belconnen. The Eels were too big, too strong, too fast for Canberra. They scored nine tries in all with bench player Taylah Falaniko getting a double. The Eels led 30-6 at half time and never really looked in danger. The highlights for the Raiders were few and far between. However, in the first half winger Holly Williams scored the try of the match. She defused an Eels kick near her own goal line - and then ran 95 metres to score. At one point it looked like the chasers may catch her, but she powered away. Australian Schoolgirls representative, Gabriella Savage, scored a try in the second half - on her debut in the green jersey. The first try of many.

The Raiders travel to Camden in Round 2 for a meeting with the Wests Tigers. The Tigers are coming off a narrow first up win over the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy (12-10). They took a 12-0 lead to the half time break, and just held off the Roosters in the second half.

14. Kalani Godinet 15. Charlotte Withers 20. Alavina Tu'ifua 18. Elanor Ward 17. Isabel McMenemy 19. Talia Pele Taula

AT A GLANCE: The Raiders made an historic first appearance in the Lisa Fiaola Cup on Saturday at Raiders Belconnen. Sadly, they were beaten by a much bigger Parramatta Eels outfit, 34-6. The Eels repeatedly stretched the Raiders' defensive line, from one side of the field to the other - and created plenty of space for themselves on the edges. The Raiders conceded a try in only the second minute of the game to centre Cody Tuimaseve. The Raiders struck back in the sixth minute, with half and captain, Adelaide Norris putting in a kick for winger Saige Fattore. But it was all the Eels from there. They scored seven tries, with winger Freedom Crichton Ropati bagging a double.

The Raiders head up the Hume Highway to Camden in Round 2, for a meeting with the Wests Tigers. The Tigers were well beaten by the Central Coast Roosters at Campbelltown Stadium in Round 1, 28-0. The Tigers finished fifth, but made the Grand Final in this grade last year. They were defeated by the Bulldogs, 36-0, in the decider. There's only a handful of players backing up from that team in 2025.

Team news: Maddison Higgins has been named at starting prop for the Raiders, with Chelsea Tyrrell dropping back to the bench. Nevaeh Peace will start in the second row. Layla Wellington drops out of the side, with Neha Smith added to the bench.

24th min ERROR RAIDERS from Kaelani Goolagong on an early tackle... and now the Tigers do exactly the same thing. Raiders attack just outside the Tigers red zone.

Now the Raiders are stipped of the ball by Alavina Tu'ifua, and she went on a big run. Great tackle by the much smaller Raiders winger, Saige Fattore.

27th min PENALTY TIGERS. The Raiders lose the ball, when they were right on the attack, and it is picked up in an off side position by Canberra. The error count is mounting.

29th min TRY TIGERS to Khiarna Munro off the scrum play. The Tigers went to the blind side from the scrum on the edge of the red zone, and the Raiders had not counted the numbers properly. Agnews Faaui converts from the sideline, again.

Tigers 18-6

HALF TIME in Lisa Fiaola Cup.

The Raiders' error count really is costly. It seems like every time they get into good position, or the Tigers turn it over, there's a Canberra lost ball. Penalties not helping either.

4th min Raiders survive an attacking onslaught from the Tigers in the red zone. They get a penalty which should get them off their own line... but now fail to find touch.
