They’ll just blame Obama, Clinton, Biden or Hunter, either that or that Trump never said it or he wasn’t serious when he did say it.

That Roman Emperor probably got stoned to death for failing.

Seems a nice little segue... hey Manbush. Welcome back.

What a **** time to be alive. This thread is going to be a hoot. All us lefties highlighting lies and broken promises while the Trumpsters claim that pointing out lies and bs is the reason people voted for Trump. Or some **** like that.

I wouldn't say lefties. I don't consider my self a lefty. More left leaning centrist. There are some issues I'd be considered conservative on,but try to live my life by the moto "don't be a ****".

I'd say MAGA and everyone else.

Indeed. It's deranged to hold people to account for the words that come out of their mouth.

We can step through it if you like?

1. Did Trump say he would end the Ukraine war in 24 hours?

2. Has he now admitted this isn't actually possible? Through the officer he delegated responsibility to manage the issue?

I suspect that what you and many others view as a display of empathy, others like me would view as cynical PR and virtue signaling.

This is a nice little example of when parasitic politician's 'displays of empathy' get the treatment they deserve.

Perhaps the treatment of Indigenous young people in youth detention by Labor state government's is a better example. That one being an example of where Labor pretends to give a **** about vulnerable Indigenous kids in inner city seats while selling the voice, while explicitly and gleefully in some cases, violating their most basic human rights in QLD watch houses, police stations and detention centres, promising to go further if elected.

Indeed he did.

No political parties are clean skins. You will always be able to point to some stuff they’re screwing up. If you have to resort to state government in 60 years behind the times Queensland then you’re probably reaching a bit no?

The point is if you look at what Liberal and Labor has stood for in the past 20 years and you think they’re the same in empathy for the common Australian… well I’d suggest you’re either an idiot or not paying attention, and you’re almost guaranteed to be a white man.

I don’t say that to celebrate Labor either. Just like the Democrats vs Trump it’s just not the same level of contempt.

The ole “if you don’t agree with me and my world views” … you’re an idiot argument and it’s that exact argument that is pushing the silent sensible (not idiots) majority, away from identity seeking, ideologically driven virtue signalling governments the world over.

Suit yourself. You’re not changing your view no matter what is written, so let’s not pretend I’ve lost some opportunity to sway the “sensible middle” here who hadn’t noticed their prime minister holidaying in Hawaii in a disaster, taking empathy classes, refusing to meet with the women’s march, their leader inciting fear over coloured gangs, laughing about allies going under in climate change, etc. etc.

How the Gaza ceasefire was carefully, quietly negotiated — and almost fell apart: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-18/ ... /104826566

Just parking this article as no doubt it will become a political point scoring debate. But the real takeaway should be that the real driving force behind this (and any) prickly negotiations between disagreeing parties are the diplomats, senior officials and/or bureaucrats. Not the politicians (and occasionally the UN) who swoop in for the photo ops once the real work is done.

I think that it's fair to knotch this up as a win for Trump, and it's a fairly impressive one. Biden can take some credit too, in that it was largely the deal that it has been pushing, but it would appear that it was the team Trump strong arming approach that got it over the line. They better think again if they think that will work with Putin and Zolensky.

I take your point though about the real players in the negotiations. Those players though go in with the attitude of their leader.

Has anyone seen any of the confirmation hearings?

Treasurey Nominee Scott Bessent - extending Trump's tax cuts to billionaires is the number 1 priority. Will not support raising the minimum wage.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/b ... r-AA1xlMrZ

Attorney General Nominee Pam Bondi: outed as an election denier and Jan 6th denier. Admitted will have to study the 14th amendment of the constitution - "you are applying for the position of the attorney General of the United States, and you will have to study the 14th amendment?"

https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2 ... a-00198434

Secretary of Defence Nominee Pete Hegsweth: multiple people on record giving multiple examples of him being an alcoholic, including his own mother.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-15/ ... /104818520

A clown show and very entertaining. And before people get up in arms about fake news and bias, Secretary of State Nominee Marko Rubio, the seemingly only serious nomination, flew through it.

No doubt these clowns will all be rubber stamped by the Republican Party. The last two seem woefully unqualified, but what ever. Can't wait for RFKs confirmation hearing.

According to the article, and there's no reason to disbelieve it, negotiations commenced 15 months ago. Bureaucrats take their orders from their leaders, sure ... but Trump isn't 'the leader' yet and was busy defending himself in court 15 months ago. You could argue that his influence helped but that is complete speculation.

Did anyone watch the Gina Rinehart speech from her Christmas party Junket?

I hadn't really heard from her until I watched it. I had presumed that being the wealthiest Australian by some margin that she would be somewhat clever, but my goodness, there's not much going on between the ears there, and she's an awful public speaker. Gina was just born into the right family. Gina comes across as dumb as she is evil, it's a gloomy outlook that people like her control the destiny of Australia.

The speech came across like a parody

Some highlights include

- Saying "please don't make us tax payers pay for pollies, beurocrats and billionaires luxurious fests around the world in aid of banning fossil fuels" while having a luxurious event in a room full of billionaires and pollies (including Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce) to endorse fossil fuels over renewables.

My favourite
- Contempt towards a Labor minister for "delaying a project to protect a dangerous grey sea snake, a snake capable of killing us"

can you believe that.. why won't you let us wipe out an ecosystem?! Snakes are dangerous!

- Threatening that "It will be the death of the ALP government if they are foolish enough to pass the Nature Positive Plan and other market interference."

- Frothing over the American Republican party with a sign around her neck saying "DIG BABY DIG", and claiming "We need to Make Australia Great Again" and declaring "We need a USA style DOGE" like the one run by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy (a name too foreign for Gina to pronounce) for cutting government spending so that they can cut taxes for corporations.

- Our new leader in waiting Dutton came out in a video afterwards, ready to be installed by this bush pig, to grovel and to say "A Dutton Coalition Government will be the best friend the resource sector in Australia will ever have" and expressed his contempt for the unionising of the workforce of mines.

- Other guests invited to to the lectern to say the same climate denialist points we've heard over the last 30 years "The more carbon dioxide we put in the air, the better it is... it is the gas of life it is not a pollutant."

Look, I get that the mining industry is important for keeping this country running and kudos to all our working miners out there, they deserve decent working rights. I just want the industry to be regulated appropriately and taxed appropriately for taking Australian minerals and to not have a different government installed any time one attempts to do such things.
