Think about that just for a little bit, try and apply some complex reasoning to what that actually means and what it also says about Trump.
They're not useful for anything. A bunch of thugs wearing ski masks and trying to stand over people.

They're a methed up version of "just stop oil".
I figured I’d have to walk you through this one, so here goes… firstly, do you understand what the term “ANTIFA” stands for?
Anti fascist. Didn't even need to search online for that one!
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

So you're saying people who identify with an "anti-fascist" ideology will be classified as terrorists under the new Trump regime?

Wow that's an almighty leap.

I refer to my earlier comment.

Trump is impolite. That does not make him or his voters fascists.

When I have time I can provide a more observant breakdown of Trumps personality, if you'd like.

You may not agree with it, but you may find it interesting or you may find it hogwash.

And with all due respect, I think I know where you will lean.

So my question to you, is can we have open discussions free of insult and derogatory comments, or can we not? I'm keen to learn as much as I can fwiw

You think people are calling Trump a fascist simply because he's "impolite"?

I think the absolute greatest shtick in the Politics thread is the guy that absolutely EVERYBODY ignores, yet he's still jumping around like Bart Simpson, going:

"NO, "LOUDMOUTH LISA!" "STUPID LISA GARBAGE FACE!" I CAN'T STAND THIS ANY LONGER. SOMEBODY PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO ME! HELLO! PAY ATTENTION TO ME. LOOK AT ME! I'M BART,
I'M BART. LOOK AT ME. LOOK AT ME. LOOK AT ME."

And yet still nobody ever pays him the slightest bit of notice.

It's genuinely my favourite bit on perhaps this whole forum.

Google trends show that in US searches for what is a tariff skyrocketed after the election.

I actually have no idea how MAGwits thought tariffs were going to work, if they gave it any thought at all. Probably the same way the famous 4% wall was going to be paid for by Mexico.

What’s genuinely funny about left leaning luvies is they deride, mock and dismiss anyone that doesn’t share their world views yet don’t realise that it is that type of political snobbery and their stoopid ideologically driven policies that is handing the keys of Government to their opponents.

Discussion around policy differences should be respectful, and yes being too bullish about that tends to disengage people. Discussion around issues of fact where one parties "opinion" is based soundly in science, and the other parties "opinion" is fanciful, need not be. Governing should be based on fact and evidence. I for one am sick people demanding that their ridiculous "opinions" be given equal weighting with actual experts. I don't consider both the opinion of my accountant and my mechanic when it comes to why my car is making that weird noise. We've been too polite about it for far too long and the time has come to call a dumb "opinion" what it is, dumb.

One of the many, many bad things about Trump winning is that is seems to have emboldened people full of stupid opinions to think that their opinions should be listened too. The reality is that governments are voted out, and like many governments around the world at the moment in this cost of living crisis, Harris was voted out. The US elected for a change, which they will no doubt come to regret. And while I have no doubt that there were many Trump supporters who voted for him because they are conspiracy theory loving "free thinkers", they are not the reason he got elected, and my opinion of them will not change.

Yeah preach it. Was about to say something along these lines but you’ve articulated it well.

Done know when it started, and Trump certainly amplified it, but the anti-intellectualism, “alternative facts” rubbish has gone too far.

Of course legitimate opinions ought to be respected, but no one should have to apologise or be branded elitist for being educated or informed about something.

I think that you are overstating the importance of the anti-intellectual vote in the US election Dubby.

There is certainly a group of young men that feel disempowered, aligned with the likes of Rogan that Trump appealed to. No doubt some of his base made up of awful, hate filled bigots are anti-intellectuals. However all around the world people are doing it hard with the cost of living, and governments are being voted out for it, including a conservative government in the UK for a progressive government.

And given that the main political proponent of anti-intellectualism in Australia Clive Palmer spent $60 mil at the last election to get just one senator, I'd say that it is far from a mainstream movement in this country.

You seem to think that it is arrogant not to pander to the ill informed opinion offered by someone on a topic with a settled knowledge base. It isn't, it's common sense.

I've spent three decades acquiring my body of knowledge, and there is nothing more arrogant than some bloke trying to lecture me on my area of expertise based on their fanciful idea or 15 minute YouTube video. Arrogant, foolish and completely devoid of self awareness. The notion that old mates 15 minutes on Google should be given the same respect as my 30 years of study and experience is laughable.

Spoken like someone who uses Orwell like a personal playbook.

Like the fact progressive politics just got a massive reality check...people have rejected them.

Like the fact the election was the biggest Republican win in 36 years?

Like the fact people typically hate being called names from those who espouse to know better yet actually do not?

That Trump hasn't changed America, the MSM did: by smearing, insulting, and intimidating decent people.

This is more moral and intellectual condescension from Trump-haters who have all the answers.
Oddly enough, it's precisely the type of thing that led to the staggering results in this election. As it turns out, people don't take favorably to being called Nazis and fascists.

And why there has been such an effort to blame the so-called manosphere and podcasters such as Joe Rogan and Theo Von for radicalising young men – when all they have done is, to use woke terminology, provide a “safe space” for dudes who’ve spent their whole lives hearing that their masculinity is “toxic”.

Facts like an increase in Hispanic and black males voted Republican?

Maybe if the left stopped trying to use Obama tactics of pitting people against each other and treated them as regular people for a change.

But, you've completely ignored Holmes a Court and his financial backing of the Teals so he can make a fortune from renewable energy.

One final thing, I've never listened to Joe Rogan, and I never intend to. Let's not forget he invited Harris for an interview. She declined. That was probably unwise on her behalf.

Instead, she raised over a billion dollars, spending $million on an Oprah interview, and ended up $20 million in debt.

You don't have to be an "expert" to realise she stuffed up and was unrelatable to most people
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises.

It seems you've wasted 30 years of your life.

And why you've referenced Nickman I have no idea.
There are certainly some things that I'd do differently, I've made a lot of sacrifices. But have I wasted 30 years? I don't think so. I've saved many lives, changed many lives for the better and been a support to people at some of the worst moments in their life. I don't say that to blow my own trumpet but to demonstrate how ridiculous your view point is.

If only you'd lived as deeply satisfying a life as dubby obviously has.

I was speaking politically, which I thought was the conversation we were having. I apologise for any misunderstanding.

I've met you Doc, and I know you to be a good bloke. We've bantered and engaged on this forum for over a decade. It's been enjoyable.

However, we do have opposing views politically. I would like to agree to disagree on certain issues rather than resort to what has already transpired.

The continued lack of any form of self-awareness is genuinely astounding.

I thought his comment about being academically superior was a cheeky bit of banter but maybe he truly believes it?

Not only does he truly believe that, he also genuinely thinks everyone else is the problem and just don’t like hearing a different opinion.

He’s also openly stated GE is a fascist (literally the guy who sticks up for his behaviour the most) and the only reason he gets censored is due to the rest of us not having the emotional maturity to handle alternative opinions, again, absurd levels of lack of self-awareness.

Nah, it was banter. At least gerg got it.

If that's the case, I think I might just open up a few windows, really let the breeze come through and air out the place.
