It never ceases to amaze me how much Bateman has been able to cash in, after less than 20 top notch NRL games in 2019. Good luck to him I guess. It would be fitting for him to change clubs once or twice more before retiring for good.

This one makes perfect sense to me. I hate him as much as the next Raiders fan and I think he’s severely regressed as a player.

But

If Manly want to win a comp while DCE is still kicking then their biggest squad hole (besides ordinary depth but that’s the trade off for Trbo and co) is left second row. A point of difference there could really boost them and I couldn’t imagine there being a better short term gamble/value play than Bateman.
I think their middle is the problem. Paseka is decent but it's a big drop off after that to Lodge and Aloia.

Good for him. We signed a potato instead
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. Daniel Vidot lands international call up in rugby league return

Former Canberra Raiders outside back Daniel Vidot is set to return to rugby league with the USA on their December tour of South Africa. Now 34 years of age, Vidot scored 55 NRL tries across his 114 games to go with 6 tries in 10 English Super League games during a career that ran between 2009 and 2011. He also scored 6 tries in 10 games for Samoa. Vidot is the only player with NRL experience in a squad entirely made up of players out of the USARL competition.

Jarrett Subloo and Adrian Trevilyan to train and trial with Cowboys

PNG Kumuls Star Morea Morea will have until Christmas to prove to North Queensland’s coaching staff that he is capable of making the step up into a fully professional environment. He will join four players each from the Northern Pride and Mackay Cutters, as well as Manly Sea Eagles Jersey Flegg 2024 captain Nicholas Lenaz for the Cowboys pre-season.

JARRETT SUBLOO Halfback / five-eighth

The Innisfail junior returns to North Queensland after five years south of the border, most recently playing two seasons for South Sydney in the NSW Cup. Subloo made his NRL debut in 2020 with the Canberra Raiders, coming off the bench in a 38-28 victory over Cronulla, however that proved to be his only appearance in first grade to date. The 24-year-old has joined the Northern Pride for the 2025 season.

ADRIAN TREVILYAN Hooker / utility

Another local kid hoping for a fairytale homecoming, Trevilyan is an ex-Kirwan Bears star who was the Peter Sterling medallist when they won the national schoolboys title in 2019. The 23-year-old joins the Pride for the upcoming season after four years in Canberra playing NSW Cup, as well as making three NRL appearances for the Raiders.

Manly circling again as RLPA called in after latest twist in John Bateman-Wests Tigers feud

Manly have re-emerged as a potential landing spot for John Bateman after the players union was called in to resolve the latest dispute between the English forward and his NRL club, the Wests Tigers.

The development adds another tense chapter in the previously untold story of Bateman’s falling out with Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall, which has been simmering for months behind the scenes at the Sydney club, and explains why the 31-year-old moved to Warrington midway through last season.

Yeah I don’t rate his coaching, but he was up against the best QLD team of all time and still managed to get one series win.

He’s always favoured incumbents over new blood (did he pick Jennings out of reserve grade?). Fittler came in and completely changed that mindset and started picking new young winners over old veteran losers, and got immediate results. He then started suffering the same fate, and Madge picked a bunch of new young winners over veteran losers.

It will be interesting to see if Loz has evolved or will get stuck in his old way of thinking, favouring experience over talent.

Yup great call. Daley actually did a good job of having NSW on the cusp of winning but he'd shoot himself in the foot over and over again with selections. He'd revert back to Mitchell Pearce at every opportunity.

The Melbourne Storm presence at the Falcons is huge - beyond what you'd expect from a 'feeder club'. If he has first grade potential, he'll be spending a lot of time in Victoria.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Here’s an idea. How about the Melbourne Storm try and put a bit more focus, money and effort into developing some juniors in the state of Victoria.

At least the Raiders do a lot locally and it’s not like our youngsters don’t also have AFL and Union knocking on their door. Storm have consistently done a Roosters and simply poach the best teen players and athletes from outside their region. It’s about time they do something more in Melbourne to develop the junior game. Like GWS and Swans have in Sydney.

Jack Wighton sings the praises of supercoach Wayne Bennett

South Sydney star Jack Wighton has revealed how Wayne Bennett’s honesty sessions have prompted an almost entire personal transformation to play under the supercoach. Just weeks after Bennett tore into the playing squad upon arrival in Maroubra, Wighton has become the first player to open up on the immediate impact of the new coach.

“Obviously he gives you honest truth, but he puts it into perspective,” Wighton said. “He has goals he has for us, what we deserve and what we dish out, work ethic, all that kind of stuff. It was a really good chat, and, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Manly are trying to win a premiership before DCE retires. They desperately need a second rower but only have cap space for a value play.

They need a good prop more than anything though. Jake T is starting to hinder them on field imo.

I don’t disagree at all. I just understand the play. I think Manly have just settled for Michael Chee Kam in his place though.

I was vocal saying the Tigers signing was a bust because he’d dropped off a cliff in the ESL after it think a bad shoulder injury.

Yeah agreed re Trbojevic. He's getting to the stage where he's a bit of a liability in that position. He's certainly beyond adding anything to his game in attack, suffice to say if he was playing lock for the Raiders people would be screaming to have him replaced. Statistically he is significantly worse than Smithies, but will be 31 at the start of the season.

Featherstone Rovers sign former Canberra Raiders forward Clay Webb

Featherstone Rovers have added to their 2025 squad with the signing of exciting youngster Clay Webb for the 2025 season. The Australian back-rower joins Rovers on a one-year deal from Newcastle Knights, where he featured for the club’s NSW Cup side throughout the 2024 campaign.

The 22-year-old has become an established edge forward over the course of the last of the last four years with both Canberra Raiders and the Knights in Australia’s second grade competition, making more than 60 appearances at that level.

Featherstone Rovers Club statement

Featherstone Rovers have added to their 2025 squad with the signing of exciting youngster Clay Webb for the 2025 season.

The Australian backrower joins the Blue Wall on a one year deal from Newcastle Knights, where he featured for the club’s NSW Cup side throughout the 2024 campaign.

The 22 year old has become an established edge forward over the course of the last of the last four years with both Canberra and the Knights in Australia’s second grade competition, making more than 60 appearances at that level.

However, the talented young forward, who stands at over six foot and 100kg heads to the UK with Rovers with the aim of cementing himself as a first team regular in the Championship.

Signing a one year deal with the club, Webb is determined to make the switch to the northern hemisphere a successful one, to help Fev challenge for higher honours next season.

Webb was excited to make the move and take on a new challenge on the other side of the world. He said:

“I’m made up to sign a deal with Featherstone, it’s a club with a rich history and one that’s got plenty of ambition to match my own, I can’t wait to get over to England and get started.

“I like to challenge myself and this move will do exactly that, it’ll be a completely new experience for me living in a new country with a different culture and even a different style of rugby.

“After speaking to Fordy it’s clear that Fev will suit the type of player I am, I’m ready to rip into pre-season, earn the trust of the boys and play a role in what will hopefully be a successful 2025 season.”

Featherstone boss James Ford added: “We’re excited to bring Clay to the club. I’m delighted to be putting a squad together with genuine competition for places. I’m very excited to watch these men fight for a starting spot in our team.”

“He’s tough, athletic and hungry to establish himself at this level in the UK, we’re excited to welcome him to the club and see what he adds to our side, I’m sure he’ll quickly become a hit with our loyal fans.”

Parramatta Eels appoints full-time pathways coaches, with Josh Hodgson to steer Harold Matthews squad

Former Canberra hooker Josh Hodgson has emerged as one of the secret weapons in Parramatta’s attempts to stem the bleeding of junior talent, starting with young gun dummy-half Lachlan Coinakis. The Eels have made an unprecedented pathways investment, installing full-time junior representative coaches across all grades for the first time in the club’s history, with Hodgson taking over their under-17s Harold Matthews Cup team for 2025. Hodgson’s role will include specialist spine coaching across all grades at the club.
